its kinda the whole point of "indie" that they dont have singles charts, or at least usually dont make it onto pop charts. also, with rare exception, indie doesnt really have a "single"-mindset, indie bands are more concerned with the art of the album. nonetheless, indie is an incredibly broad genre of music, it has virtually nothing to do with what it sounds like, all that matters is that it's on an independent label. which is why usually they don't chart, as they dont have as big of marketing as bands on major labels (there are exceptions, such as how Arcade Fire made it to #1 in both the UK and US a couple of weeks ago) but even that definition has been obscured in recent years by the fact that many "indie" bands have signed to major labels, even though they largely keep their sound.

if you'd like a site to go through, www.pitchfork.com (http://pitchfork.com/) is basically my bible. their concentration is on independent (indie) music, and they've become one of the most influential music publications in recent years, single-handedly launching the careers of bands like arcade fire, animal collective, and a bunch more. they're kinda famous for their unique rating system of 0.0 - 10.0, right down to the decimal point. i think only about 10 or so albums in the website's 15 years have ever gotten a 10.0. i'd suggest going through their lists of best albums by year/decade. there is no "indie top 40" lol. there are charts for specific genres like dance and rock and stuff, but there's not one for indie because like i said, indie is NOT a genre of music. i mean there are sometimes indie bands that make the pop charts, like i said just a couple weeks ago the band arcade fire had the #1 album in the US and UK, so check them out?!

lol and looking for the most popular indie is kinda missing the point of indie in the first place.

i thinkk in the us and uk we have slightly different takes on the word 'indie'. in america it is literally music released on independent labels i believe, but in the uk indie is classified as a genre.

youre right luce there are charts for genres and they are done by radio 1 usually, and they do have an indie chart but its just music released by indie labels so the music is all different and not just the type you're looking for. here it is anyway if you want to have a look http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/indiesingles

end of year lists are a lot better than top 40s, BUT IM A SUCKER FOR HIPSTERISM.
It really depends if you're a album kinda person or a singles kinda person.

If you like Mumford you should probably try out the current 'indie folk' scene or whatever it is. Try Laura Marling, Fleet Foxes or Noah and the Whale's 2nd album (but don't touch the first, it's terrible)

+ obviously check out Arcade Fire from prev posts.

hahahaha ive never seen this before. but even still, i doubt this is accurate as a lot of "indie" albums are sold in small stores that arent counted towards billboard charts. and what since when has bun b been on an indie label?

totally lost 10% of my respect for you :(
I love indie music, but I think bands like the kooks, the enemy and the view are what makes me not say 'indie music' when asked what type of music I like, like when people presume you like Linkin Park if u say alternative. NOT THAT I SHOULD CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK I LISTEN TO, I JUST WANT TO BE COOL YH.

This thread has made me facepalm so much. The stupid misconception of "indie" that people have today really ******* annoys me.

i agree but at the same time, as long as people are supporting music, i don't think it matters about genre-ising.

i don't claim to be a musical guru, this is just what the bands i like generally come under. So please do enlighten us as to where we have all gone so insufferably wrong.

i dunno check out some songs listed to see if you like them, then discover new bands through it blablabla
