Can microsoft possibly get anymore money? No? Wrong...

Major Nelson (http://majornelson.com/archive/2010/08/30/price-change-for-xbox-live-gold-subscription.aspx) has dropped the bomb on the Xbox Live community by announcing a price increase for the Xbox Live service. Starting November 1st, the price of Live will go up for residents of Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom and the United States.

One year of Xbox Live will now cost $10 more. Microsoft is letting you buy a year of Xbox Live (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/pricelock/default.htm) at a discounted rate before the increase starts. And there will still be deals on sites like Amazon. Even with these things, the increase prices will be felt by people who are already seeing their shoestring gaming budget stretched to its limit by the weekly glut of new games hitting store shelves. Add to that the price of services like Netflix and Hulu and gaming becomes a very expensive hobby rather quickly.

Giving Microsoft some credit, the price of Xbox Live has not increased since it was launched. Now, with PSN Plus putting pressure on them, is now the right time to increase the price? In addition, Sony gives away free games to PSN Plus subscribers that are playable as long as you keep the service. Xbox Live does not offer any thing other than discounts and demo access to Gold members.

In addition to that, publishers like EA and Activision are starting to push initiatives that will force you to pay an extra $10 to play their games online if you did not buy new. That means if you’re a Gamestop or Gamefly customer, you’ll have to pay even more if you want the full experience.

What do you think? Is the Live price increase going to make you go Silver? Are you happy with what you get for your dollar? Let us know.

Go to hell microsoft.

I don't see why they charge for LIVE. I have a PS3 so I can enjoy free PSN but still, if I had an XBOX then I'd expect to be able to go on-line on my own internet connection for free.

Still, only a quid for U.K.

For all we know the year sub could still increase
I wonder how this affects sales.

Talk about getting what you pay for, last time I was in asda I saw them selling xbox 360's for £97 lmao. And I am assuming PS3's are still £300+?

Well you can't say 40 million people, there are repeat buys for all consoles :P

Also apple, you can get a ps3 for around £230 now if you look at the right place (that's my guess anyway). RRP is around £250 cheapest as far as I know :L.

Tbh i highly doubt any supermarkets will increase the price much anyhow. eg. Games are £50 but discounted to £40 so i guess itll be similar

Fail troll? Gutted...

Guess the price rise could be worse. Wouldn't mind some extra stuff thrown in though.

I'm pretty sure free online is one of the reasons PS3 is more expensive in the first place so obviously no PS3 owner would be happy if they found out they'd have to start paying for online? :S Not trying to start a war here, just saying it's only like a pound/dollar it has gone up by.

If you buy LIVE by the month then you're stupid anyway, I don't blame Microsoft for trying to cash in on those people.

Works out cheaper for me paying £5 a month than paying £40 in one bulk.

Why do you think people pay for things monthly? Get a grip.

No the ps3 was $800 USD and sold for $500 USD, at launch :P The whole point of PS+ is to get revenue from psn.

12 months in a year. 5 x 12 = 60. That's £20 extra you're paying.

And with the price going up to £6 (£72 for 12 months), I think you need to go back to school for both manners & maths.

I always pay for a year, no point doing it any other way.

lmao it = £60 so £20 more XD

Think that was a bit of a fail there.

thats why companies charge less for longer periods of time, to encourage you to buy them and stick with the product longer. Works that way with every subscription.

and +rep if anyone can prove me wrong of a cmpany that charges less per month then they do per year ;)

Well what I think is pretty fail is that Runescape (sure you will have heard of that it's massive) charges exactly the same per month for 6 months and 12 months so you save no money at all for buying 12 months instead of 6.

But anyone buying xbox live would be a fool to pay monthly, more hassle and more money lol... :P

Like others have said, if you pay monthly, it works out more expensive anyway. Not that it matters, I'm sure you're about 12 and you get your mum to pay it for you
