How long can they keep you in for? Just wondering, would be nice to know so they dont turn round tomorrow and say they're gonna keep me in until I'm 98. Obviously being sarcastic but you understand what I mean.

Generally I wouldn't put a limit on how long they could keep you in as it really depends on what's wrong with you to begin with :P

I was in hospital wednesday and they kept me in till like late evening at like 7-8PM

There's currently a shortage of nurses and beds at the moment, so I wouldn't worry about them keeping you in too long :)

Thats not all entirely true... Yes there is a shortage of beds (depending on area) but that has nothing to do with the length of time a person will have to stay in hospital. Obviously it depends why you're in hospital as to how long your stay in hospital will be. They will not keep you in any longer then you need to be.

It all depends on what you're going there for. If it's just a general check-up for something it could be a few hours, if it's for something more serious it could obviously be a lot longer!

It really depends on your condition. I've been kept in for a day when I had operations on my ears, but I was kept in 5 days when I had an asthma attack, so it depends on the severity of your condition, and your recovery rate, most of which is usually decided at the hospital.

It's a valid point to make. If you "cba" to go in because of weather change, you should make the hospital aware of it because it means that your position could be taken by someone else much sooner.

Who cares what the reason of why your going in. your wasting someones time and even more by not cancelling the appointment. People wonder why NHS is going downhill these days.

Considering it's not an 'on record' appointment then I don't think I need to? But hey, a few users on HxF think they know the ins and outs of A&E after watching a few Holby City programmes and feel the need to comment on an area which is completely irrelevant to the original question asked in the original post. My decision not to go wasn't soley down to me saying "cba", it was down to me judging a few aspects and determining whether it'd be right to go. But if you wish to know about it (you seem to care a lot about it considering you've commented on the subject when I've made it clear it's over) then please don't hesitate to PM me, I'll be awaiting a hastily written PM due to your eagerness shall I?

Indeed I asked a question about how long they could keep you in, not once did I mention the word "appointment" in my original post. If your just popping down the A&E for a non emegency, you could be told to go to your GP instead. You got to think of the waiting times in the A&E as well. I think I waited for 7/8 hours just for a broken nose.

Would it be better to make an urgent appointment with a local dcotor in the morning?

Not really, I've made an appointment in the past (around November, after originally posting about it on another forum on "Sun Apr 26, 2009 3:53 pm" and ignoring the original posts until I updated it in Nov when I took notice of what the posters were telling me) and it's now down to the stage where if I get it the hospital want me to go over asap and they'll check me out because they have no idea what is up. It's not something I need to make an appointment for and simply can't considering I only know three/four/five hours beforehand that it's going to kick in and when it's in full swing I'm not allowed to walk/drive/whatever.

My original appointment was at the doctors who then made an original appointment at A&E for scans etc. It's nothing I can control and either need to hope the hospital can find out what's up or I grow out of it. Looking on the internet others suffer it and it's confused other hospitals around the world. Unfortunately I've had since I was around 12/13, I'm now 17.

So as I'm sure you'll agree I need to make sure it is what it is and not just a normal stomach ache before venturing down to A&E.

however long they need really lol. a year ago i had an operation and left on the same day. this year i had the same operation, a couple of weeks ago, and they wanted to keep me in for a week.
