Surprised? Well you should’t be, it’s a known feature (not a bug), as is apparent by the issue being the number one FAQ on Halo: Reach‘s Xbox page.
Q1: The error “One or more players do not have an Xbox 360 Hard Drive. An Xbox 360 Hard Drive is required to play co-op on Xbox LIVE or system link” occurs when I try to play. Why?
A1: One or more players do not have a certified Xbox 360 hard drive attached to their Xbox 360 console. Some multiplayer aspects of Halo: Reach require an Xbox 360 certified hard drive.

This means that console owners who bought the game and have a brand new slim 4GB Xbox have a huge chunk of the game’s functionality missing.

Its pretty much common sense now that you miss out on 3/4 of xbox live features due to limited hard drive space, if you have a memory card then you can't download a system update.

In this case I don't understand though. Why can't it just load the files from the disc?

probably downloading big maps actually, and the temp info for connecting up with peeps

They should have some sort of warning on the box so you would know this before you buy it.

thats probs whats gonna get them done in.

for the basic consumer who just wants something to play games on, theyre gonna think storage isnt that much of an issue if you just wanna play multiplayer.
but obv not.

For more money, people who want the new xbox but can't afford it get the 4 gig, then they find out they can't do much with it and are forced to spend more money upgrading the hard drive.

Just buy a pre owned 20GB for like a tenner and remove the casing.

Microsoft are aware of the issue and are working on a fix.

The Halo series has always been about addictive multiplayer experiences, so it's most disturbing to find out that campaign co-op gaming on the latest title is a non-starter for people without a hard drive attached to their 360. An issue has been identified by users of the 4GB Xbox 360, whereby attempts to team up on the baddies with your buddies -- whether locally or via Xbox Live -- is met with an error message saying that a HDD is "required for this game type." This affects both Halo: Reach and the earlier Halo: ODST. Adding extra memory via USB has been found to be ineffective, but at least Microsoft has stated that it's aware of the limitation and is "quickly working to resolve it." Standard multiplayer is predictably unaffected, so we suggest taking your rage out on some newbies while the MS techs figure out their caching algorithms.

I think it's kinda lame how this is happened, but I thought the idea of a 4GB 360 was stupid in the first place

Wtf, why did they even sell a 4gb version?!

This. My phone has almost 8x that built in lol...

I'm sure it will of been made clear to them that they have limited functionality for some things and it is just common sense that if you buy it you won't have enough memory anyway.

I thought a core was just as stupid when it first came out. Just the same as I think people having to buy the plug and play kits separately are stupid. I love my 360, but Microsoft sure know how to milk money out of people
