View Full Version : Urg, what to do? :/
Last year, my attendance at college was pretty poor due to some family issues and I'v only been allowed on this year if my attendance improves.
My mum has booked a weekend in the Lake District with her friend and has also paid for me to go, which is Friday to Monday, meaning I'm going to miss college. So not only will it look bad on me and have a risk of getting thrown off since it isn't exactly a valid reason, I'll lose out on my ALG.
I told my mum that I don't really want to go because of this reason, plus they will be doing a lot of dog walking in the mountains which I can't exactly do in trainers. Now shes having ago at me because she's already paid for me.
Now I really don't know what to do, go to the lake district or stay at college and keep my good attendance :l
I'm pretty sure that your college won't mind you missing 2 days as long as you catch up with anything you've missed.
I'll also miss out on £90 ALG which I can't really afford to miss out on :/

When I was at college and got ALG i still got paid as its only basically missing 1 day / week - so unless its changed since I stopped gettin it i reckon you'll still be able to get it.
oops, meant £60 not £90.

Why don't you suggest another person your mum can take instead of you?

How are you getting £60 ALG when the website states up to £30, just like EMA?

I had a similar problem this year. My mum had her sights set on another holiday to India in about November time. I had to pretty much lay down the marker and tell her i wouldn't be missing anytime off with so many GCSEs to prepare for and to sit this year.
You're just gonna have to tell her you want to put your education first, and like said above, get her to take somebody else.

evidently some people haven't read this fully when they reply "college won't mind". And yes... they don't mind even further bad attendance?
I think you should speak to your guidance tutor and get their advice. Personally I wouldn't go and tell your mum to stop being so ignorant and narrow minded as that doesn't do you any favours by her being selfish expecting you to drop your education and money all for a four day break?
And if you go you could get a doctors self cert. for not being there, they'd still pay you that way (normally).

Because he would miss the friday and the monday meaning two days on different weeks.
Its a toughie, how many lessons are you going to miss?
My mums fine with me staying home now, at the time she was a little pissed off since I did kinda agree to go when she booked it (She said for a weekend, no specific days :P). In a way it works out cheaper for her since she doesn't have to pay for my meals and drinks out every night :D
The main subject I would miss would be 7 hours of extended project, which I need to spend as much time as I can :P
Well at least you've sorted it out now and I'm sure in the long run your mum will be ok because its your qualifications and the rest of your life which obviously is very crucial for jobs / later life.

At college I can understand not going on holiday but GCSE's are just so ridiculously easy you should go in my opinion. Anyone can sleepwalk through them. go on the holidays now while you can afford to, catching up at GCSE is really easy anyway..

Can't you just pull a sickie? I have faked notes in my school planner many times when I have been late in the morning, then the lesson(s) I am late to go down as an M instead of L.
