I bought Doctor Who series 5 HD for £25 of iTunes,
and its downloading all 13 episodes in HD but below it says its downloading in not HD as well.
It's also taking ages to download, like 4 hours per a 40 minutes episode
also, what happens if my mac switches off when half way through downloading?
and is their anyway to make the downloads go faster?

I think that if your mac was to switch off half way through, it can continue next time itunes is run. It's like that with my iPod apps anyway.

Yeah that's right. Apple downloads the file in "parts" much like a torrenting service. So you'll get part of the file and when you restart the computer again it'll just resume where it left off.
It downloads the SD version as well so you can watch the episodes on most iPods and iPhones, as only the retina display devices and the iPad can sync/display HD files.
EDIT: And if it doesn't automatically start downloading after a shutdown, the 'Look for iTunes Downloads' or something along those lines is below the Purchased playlist, or at least should be.
Yeh it's like any download which you do, should your computer, laptop, mac or whatever turn off then it'll just resume the download from where it left off the next time you turn it on.

From the sound of things, it may be your internet connection.
I've never had any problems whilst downloading videos/TV shows from iTunes. They download quite quickly and with no real problems. At the same time, the quality of the file you're downloading could be a justifiable cause as to why the download speeds are slow.

Finished downloading xD
took like 4 hours per 3 episodes, so just left my mac on over night,
SD versions only took 20 mins each.
but all 13 HD episodes took 18GB on my iPad Thought , only 10 more left. xD

Then my assumption was correct. The better-quality file type took longer to download.
