I've just read an interesting article on the BBC News Technology page about Apple trying to sue a company as they are using the word Pod in their upcoming Video pod product.

What gets me is that the word Pod has been around far longer than Apple has. What do I use at work when I empty the tills in tescos - A money pod, and I could list many other uses of it in products and so on.

Everyone just seems to be suing everyone these days.

The entire world is suffering through an economic recession; people are doing anything to get money, apparently.

The USA's legal system went to pot ages ago, their intellectual property system is also as rubbish as this.

Apple can go sod themselves though, so it's all fine :P If they are going ahead with this then they're just further proving themselves to be a crappy company. They tend to be the cause of all this controversy with regards to copyright/patent infringements anyway. All I'm looking forward to is:

"Apple Goes Bankrupt"
or
"Apple is bought out by Microsoft"

I seriously do not like Apple, they're up there in my top 3 companies that should disappear - Sulake being one of them :P

Sure, they bring out nice innovations, but they're immediately over-taken by real companies that do things properly. Google and Android, Microsoft and Windows 7... Creative were good for MP3 players but they've lost their touch recently :/

They will be sueing Sulake for their Plastic Pod Chair next.

Haha, I don't doubt that.

I may have an iPod, but I'm none too happy with the company. If they just mysteriously disappeared, I most likely wouldn't care.

On topic:
Well yeah they will sue anyone or anything just to get money, who wouldnt if they made millions every single day.

Off topic:
Apple might be money hungry but they have the best system for media, believe it or not, don't judge until you try it ;) I prefered using a MAC when it came to multimedia, such as music, graphics and so on. They aren't designed for gaming. Thats why most of you don't like mac.

Can I ask what is wrong with Sulake - i havent really used Habbo for years.

And the problem with consumers is they sometimes think if people like their products then they can do what they want. This could lead to a backlash.

Apple seems to love taking people on - Its caused a lot of problems at the moment with Adobe claiming Flash is unstable and dangerous - I read an interesting article I can't find now that talked about one of the apparent true but hidden reasons that Apple didn't want to use Flash.

Apparently part of the flash technology was given to Firefox or something for free by adobe - I cant remember much about it but what I did hear is part of the technology for videos in XHTML is patented by Apple and thats why they want XHMTL to be big and why they won't support flash

you're forgetting that sueing commerical companies costs hundreds of thousands of pounds, if not more. if thats the case then would apple sue everyone who uses the word pod to describe something?

Considering Apple have a reported $40 billion cash in hand, this will not be about money at all.

as far as i knew, the 'i' was more patented than pod :l and pod was just a generic word after it lol.

You could agree with them if who ever it is was using the name 'iPod' but they're not. If anyone out there is going to use the words micro, soft, desk, top etc they should be scared right about now as well.

Most likely not. Apple is a competent monopoly; I'm sure they're suing for the name, not the money.

Bear in mind that it's Apple filing the lawsuit, not the defending company. Besides, they've got more money than they know what to do with; I'm sure they'd be suing for more than the court costs anyway.

Many people have mixed views if this is the right thing to do or not in regards of a company sueing another for using "Pod" in one of their products. Now I ask people this question: If Apple came out with Apple iTV (Apple TV formally) then would ITV be in the right to take them to court and what not?

Dray,

Good question, iTV (internet/individual TV, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imac#Popular_culture)and ITV (Independent Television, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITV) actually do mean the same thing..

It's bad publicity for a company that already has less than polished publicity to begin with.

Well not really - a lot of people would applaude the company for beating apple and showing them how wrong the system is

Can I ask what is wrong with Sulake - i havent really used Habbo for years.
Grew too big for their boots and treat their customers like scum of the earth. It doesn't help that the actual system itself is too big for itself - by that I mean: Too many features that don't have a use. Lack of old "proven, tried and tested" features which don't work anymore, or not as well as they used to. Traditions have died. All they want is money, which is what a company wants, yes, but at least make it fun for the consumer to hand over the money :/ It's so complex to use, I'm amazed anyone knows how to use it :P

Any further news on Apple showing off their lameties or is the law suit still brewing away quietly? Hopefully they lose. Pod is a word, not a bi-product from Apple. It's something so simple that for some reason pedantic companies such as Apple fail to comprehend that other companies exist and are entitled to the use of the word for their own product provided it isn't infringing on copyright - by either being called an "iPod" or being of the same physical properties and/or use. Thankfully Europe, the UK and the rest of the world have a real legal system, unlike the American legal system where you can pretty much halt creativity, provided the cash is right.

Unfortunately :( The moment they got rid of any community aspects I left, and started hating them when they stuck their fingers up at fansites.

Back to the iPod. 'i' products have beena round far longer than Apple took them over. My dad had an 'iPhone', which was a pretty basic internet phone that probably didn't know what 3G was :P

This is weird; they're sueing a company for using the word "pod" in their new product, but hasn't there been a brand of shoes called "pod" for years???

There are quite a lot of uses of the word 'pod' - a few which are even before the ipod.

I like how people seem to just be realising that "pod" is a word countless years older than Apple's inception.

Europe, the UK and the rest of the world?
No.. In europe you don't have habeus corpus. Also, thepiratebay case comes to mind where the swedish legal system was lobbied into prosecuting. In the UK, the legal system is a complete joke.

One thing doesn't make a legal system better. With regards to corporate responsibility, the rest of the world has common sense. The US system lacks it, with regards to the patent and copyright system. You can patent anything, when you shouldn't need to and in some cases you really shouldn't be patenting things - multi-touch was one example. It's incredibly frustrating when a system represses technological evolution, especially when it is over some incredibly trivial like the name 'pod'. ThePirateBay was pushing the limits, though I do agree it was wrong that the Swedish government collapsed under pressure.

Considering iPods are pretty much the only MP3 player to buy nowadays, you can't say all their products suck. I actually wouldn't say any of their products suck, they're just hated on because of the high price tag, which is fair enough I 'spose :P
