Another fairly gruesome thread, but the forum needs more discussions :P

You are stuck in a room and the only way out to live is by getting to a key attached to the ceiling. You cannot reach the key without climbing up lot's of obstacles, however by climbing up the obstacles you will be paralysed for the rest of your life. You will be able to control your head, but not control any other part of your body.

The other option is to starve in the room and die - but obviously you won't have to live the rest of your life paralysed.

As long as my brain is intact, I can still indulge in conversation, watch television and listen to the beauty of music, then I would rather be paralysed. Honestly as long as I am still alive I think I would be happy.

Who knows what an obstacle is? For example if you are climbing up and a spear goes in to your spine. Not actually sure how it happens, but it does lol

I've always said I would rather die than live my life being, for a lack of words, useless.

I wouldn't like to have someone have to aid me to use a toilet, to eat my dinner or to do other fundamental things. I wouldn't be able to work, I wouldn't be able to socialise and I simply wouldn't be me. Where's the quality of life having someone do everything for you? I'm sure a life where you can only speak and listen is a life not worth living.

Paralysed to that extent would basically be locked in syndrome but without losing the ability to speak. I'd probably rather be dead, I'd be such a burden to other people and I wouldn't be able to do anything at all since I wouldn't be able to move my arms.

It's a really hard question to answer really, and obviously hopefully a situation i'd or never be in :p I don't know if i'd be able to stay in the room and starve to death cause that would be horrible and really painful so I guess i'd go with the being paralysed at least you would still have some quality of life I guess

Yeah I think Scott is right in this one, going on the title alone I'd rather die but then allowing yourself to starve to death which is a very long, drawn out and painful process is not something anyone would particularly enjoy so even if you resolved to allow yourself to die there's certainly a chance you would think: bugger this, paralysis it is!

I think I'd go for the paralysis and then hope that some kindly doctor (here's hoping for Dr. Shipman) realises I was just a wimp and didn't want to starve to death and decides to overdose me with morphine. If not, technology for people will full body paralysis but with a functioning brain is becoming quite remarkable (although expensive) so I could perhaps cope if I was hooked up to some of the stuff they've got around now.

Eh? Now I can't even climb up obstacles without being paralysed? This is as bad as knowing bacon, mutual understanding and rational thought can give me cancer :(

And I'd rather be paralysed. Sure, your physical self would be broken, but it doesn't mean your mind, emotions and the like will be gone. I've had a happy life, might as well continue it :)

I think this is the key for me. If I can control myself mentally, I'd choose the non-death option. If I was suffering from Alzheimer's or a disease that will kill me mentally, I'd probably want to die. so yeah I'd be paralysed and mentally cross my fingers for new technology that will let me speak with my eyes! :D
