Okay I want 70 smithing & I don't want to lose money tbh 'Cos I don't have much atm, I have 2 options:
Buy ores & make mith bars OR cannonballs.
Which would be faster, 5 mith bars per invent or 27 steel bars to make c'balls? :S

That's how I did it, go for this!

(and I suggest getting SC hammers)

Spend a few hours dungeoneering and get a coal bag = faster smithing if you decide to do mith bars.

I would say no to cannonballs. I once decided to earn xp through making cannonballs and I could not believe how long it took to make each one. So try it out first so you know what you are getting yourself into...

Don't make cannonballs unless you only want cash. It is very slow exp/hour.
Make mith platebodies using SC hammers. It's very good exp/hour and if you mine your own ores you will make profit and get some mining exp as well.
You could also mine the mith and coal ores in the Mining Guild and superheat the ores into bars while you're there. You'll get both magic and smithing experience and you won't have to keep running back and forth from the furnace.
