Ho ho ho! As you may, or may not, know Habbox sponsors a Charity for the Christmas period, with all takings from the sale of Christmas VIP going towards it.

So, this is where you come in! In this thread you can nominate the charity you believe we should support this year :). Nominations will run over the next few weeks and the charity with the most support at the end will be our Christmas Charity VIP!

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is always a deserving charity to give to. They work so hard in everything they do in order to save the lives of children and our money could go to them to help them to achieve their objectives of making sure all of their patients get the medical help and attention they need x

I personally think, at a time like Christmas it should be something like a children's hospice (http://www.childhospice.org.uk/). I know why people want us to donate to Cancer Research but unlike thousands of other charities out there, they can afford and have the power to get backing for television adverts which a lot of charities don't. I think the money we raise would make a bit more of a difference to one of those charities, rather than Cancer Research.

Christmas is normally a time for giving and sharing that's normally aimed more towards children, so why not :P

I agree with both these things. Shelter doesn't just help those living on the street, they try to prevent it at all costs. They give help to families who are in danger of eviction and help victims of domestic abuse.

Anyway, how is this going to work? The one with most nominations in this thread will get picked? Or will you choose all of the nominations in this thread and make a large poll and announce it across the forum so more people get involved and we can actually see an accurate tally? Also, will just one charity be chosen? Last time it was the top three charities with the most votes and people could then purchase VIP for whatever one they desired and the money would then go to that specific charity. I quite liked that way as it made everyone happy and every little helps!

I liked the way it was done last year so I think that maybe we should get the top 3 charities that people choose and do that. Also, can we try and get some acknowledgement from the charities that you can post like a few years back with Livestrong. I'm not doubting that the money does go to charity however I think that people would be more likely to do it again in future if they actually saw a thanks from the charities.

I think the money should go to a smaller charity rather than a large one like cancer research. Don't get me wrong, it's a very worthwhile cause, but I think it would look a much bigger donation if it went to a lesser-known charity, rather than one which recieves lots.

Then again, I do think the Make a Wish Foundation is a brilliant charity (probably because it works so closely with Disney) and I know someone who had their wish granted. So that gets my vote :)

Or the RSPCA of course!

^ SOMEONE IN CHARGE GET BACK TO ME ^

It depends on how large the majority is. If like 90% of the people in the thread favour one charity, given its been stuck in a very visible and active forum for several weeks then we'll no doubt go for that. If like last year it's pretty evenly matched, we'll either pick the top few again or put it to a final vote.

Its very early days at the moment, but it would depend on how clear the winner would be. If most people wanted one specific charity we would most likely do it that way - if not we'll do what Jamesy said above.

I think I gave £25 to Help for Heroes last year and I still believe it is a great charity to support. However this year I would like the Charity to be one that looks after children - either African kids or kids in our own country. I will be going to Namibia to renovate a school in July, and my sister did it last year. It really was a life changing experience for her, and has helped her realise how little amounts, and help the kids there. I am currently raising £2145 to renovate another school there, but anyway.

Either that or a hospital in England who helps ill kids get better. My sister (again) went to Adenbrookes hospital when I was 9/10 seriously ill with something called 'Transverse Mylitos' (or something spelt like that!) The hospitals did a brilliant job, and I know they do for thousands of other children in Britain.

My third choice would be Help for Heroes, and I still believe this is a fantastic charity. These guys risk their lives on our behalf - surely that is one of the most courageous jobs you can do.

PLEASE do NOT do Cancer Research - they have SO many adverts etc - how can this be a worthy cause?? I know cancer is a really bad disease, but I don't think Cancer Research is going to find a cure.

---

Perhaps have one colour of VIP for each chosen cause (if three are chosen like last year).

Chippiewill

Perhaps have one colour of VIP for each chosen cause (if three are chosen like last year).
This got voted down last year even though I thought it was cool, because people wanted to donate to help for heroes or whatever but get the NSPCC colour so they just made it so you picked the colour and the charity separately..

Also I think a small charity should be chosen to help children somewhere..

Mrs.McCall
17-10-2010, 05:03 PM
I think that one single charity should be decided on so they can get the biggest donation. I think maybe an elimination style? We could put up a poll and then whoever nominated a charity (say for example make a wish, GOSH, Cancer Research) can sort of like, give their reasons as to why they chose it then the rest of the forum can choose which one they want.

Jamesy
17-10-2010, 05:09 PM

I definitely agree with the cancer research one - but also, this is a different one I've not seen before:

The Missing People Charity
Just think, you wake up one morning to find your child isn't there anymore.
You wake up to find your Mum has gone?

You try to call them and get no answer, you can't find them - you launch campaigns, you can't find them.

It comes to Christmas and that one person you want to spent your Christmas with, you can't.

Think about a Christmas without your parents? Your child? not nice.

I think at Christmas we should think about those that may not be as lucky as us to be able to sit at the dining table with our families and share a special day - every Christmas is a sinister reminder to those families that members of their family aren't there for the festivities and to share the joy.

exactly. the most you'll receive is a generic thank you letter, i mean yeah all charity is good charity but it'd be nice to actually see the money go to use.
i am completely against cancer research getting the money btw. it's so bloody unimaginative. the charity does good work etc etc, but just cause it's the first charity that pops into someone's head, it doesn't by any means mean they do the best/most work. for example, cancer related, mcmillion nurses would be a far needier cause.

I'm voting Shelter, not only are they among the most compassionate charity groups around but they're helping people in our own country to make better lives for themselves when things have flown out of control. Ill kids with diseases such as cancer. I've been on 6 camps and they are amazing. Each camp is £1000 per child so every donation matters.

When sending a shoebox you are supposed to put the money in to send it off anyway. :)

Since Habbox is more of an international site now, I don't think it would be really fair to give all the money just to one UK charity, maybe we could split the money into 4, one for UK, one for AU, one for CA and one for US?

Totally second this, as i always fill a shoebox every year for it. I think it would be great if we could help pay for the fundings to be able to send the shoeboxs all across the world to unfortunate children, and it is a christmas charity

I don't think the word is unfortunate. Less privileged maybe.

I'd like to nominate the MacMillan Cancer Support. This Charity helps support people affected by Cancer and looks at improving the social, emotional and practical impact Cancer has. I always drop in to my local MacMillan Hospice to donate some money. This is where my Grandma was kept for a few months before she sadly passed away.

Something like hope for heros/orphans who need support at Christmas especially because it can be lonley if you don't have someone to share it with :) I think it should be something national/local aswell because they can sometimes get overlooked, we do have needs in the UK aswell especially with the recession etc.

Now that Habbox is international either four charities must be chosen (One for each country, US, UK, AU, CA) OR an international charity is chosen. It's the only fair way.

H4H gets enough help tbh

Anways I think we should save the japan dolphins (http://www.savejapandolphins.org/). They made a film about the dolphins in Japan called The Cove, you need to watch it because it's actually horrible what they do to these dolphins.

Yep. They are hardly fighting for our country. The only reason they are "fighting for my country" is because of the money. Do you really think they would risk their lives for us?

I'd support them but everyone says, Dog or people fighting for us..

The only reason they are "fighting for my country" is because of the money.
Most people I speak to who want to join the military don't say 'moneh' they mostly say 'I want to pay service to my country' or 'It's fun' or similar.

Apparently some of the uneducated people on this forum have no idea how poor the basic salary is if you go in to the army.

Seriously, go and find out, then come and dare to say that again.

Well my mum had breast cancer, so I'm going to go with Cancer Research. She had a weekly injection that costs over £900 per injection for 2 or 3 months.

THIS IS A FANTASTIC IDEA

It would keep going all year round, then Jin or whoever gets the letters from the child could post them on to hxf. I would be well up for this.

Can we choose local charity's ?? If so

Donnas dream house. its a hospice that would be grateful of any help they could get :)
http://www.donnasdreamhouse.co.uk/

THIS THIS THIS!! I used to stop near that in Blackpool, it was sad and made me imagine being disabled with a life threatening illness. It made me think that they can't probably ask their parents for holidays and their parents probably can't afford it because they may not work because they are looking after the children.

Basically, they give children with life threatening illnesses a free holiday! I think local charities should be considered. It would mean more to them rather than something like Cancer Research. I know I sound a scrooge there, but it would! Cancer research has adverts etc. Donnas dream house only has a charity shop - I bought some trousers from there, they still fit. But the fact is they are willing to help. They even tried giving my Mum the trousers I got, instead of paying the price of £1. But it was for a good cause so she wouldn't take no for an answer.

I am also inclined to agree with supporting smaller local charities, it's far easier to see the difference that will be made.

This charity, helps children that don't have anything. They give them a shoebox that we, pack with toys and colouring pens etc, and wrap up in christmas paper and send off to this charity, which they send to them who don't have anything.

Without this charity, these people wouldn't be even getting 1 christmas present

posting again because i really agree with this xx and because it's in like page 2 and no one is reading page 2 now

I did this charity a while back i think its a great cause :)

I am personally involved with Canteen as my sibling had cancer when he was 11 thru till when he was 15. I think it would be a great charity to support and canteen do a whole lot to help out young people living with cancer.
