View Full Version : PC wont turn on..
Well i've been given a pc and it won't turn on. I've tried running it with just processor and ram, just to see if it would boot up. but nope, tried all different configurations trying to turn it on. When the power is connected, the pwr_led on the motherboard is lit up, but when you press the button, it doesnt even go to a POST so i can't determine whats wrong with it. I'm thinking this might be the PSU? It was working but didnt turn it on for around 3 weeks and im now in this situation :( terribly worded thread, i know.

I had this problem with my current computer and found out that it was because the USB port was so messed up, the prongs (or w/e the metal attatchments) inside the port were touching the motherboard and this caused it to fault and be inactive. I removed the USB port and everything was working fine afterwards.

Try pulling the power cable out and removing the round BIOS battery from the motherboard for a couple of minutes, have you also got a spare power supply and graphics card you can try?

Throw it in the bin and get a new one. My computer wouldnt turn on and in the end it was the motherboard which would cost me bout the same price as another computer.

Which is odd, considering when building a computer a motherboard can be anything from about £20 - £150 depending on what you want.

Are you sure the ram is seated correctly, GF's laptop had a problem abit like this and turns out her ram wasn't seated propley. It's either that or something with the PSU or something.

Make sure the PSU is connected properly.
I've checked all the connections and taken the bios battery out, but it still doesnt work. I'll have to check all the prongs. Sadly don't have a spare psu but i tried it without the graphics card and with, as it has built in graphics as well.. i can only assume its the psu :(

try with just 1 ram stick, diffrent ram, remove everything but keyboard from back (apart from power & monitor obviously) what happens on start up, black screen then nothing? or does anything at all come up?

It would bleep.
This sounds like your motherboard is faulty. Another thing you could check is the case pins. The wires that come from the front of the case that attach to the motherboard may not be in the right place...

No, not nessisarily, some motherboards have the little speaker on the board that produce the sound removed, or things such as my girlfriends laptop never had one. You can't assume that it will beep, there are countless of problems it could be. Another thing, a beep could mean anything. I get a beep when i turn my pc on becuase thats just how it is, i then get two beeps because i don't have a PS2 keyboard.
