View Full Version : On a down..
I suppose this is just a vent more than anything but here we go.
Recently, ive just been feeling more down than usual, mainly because of my eczema. I've probably talked about it a lot before (or atleast i feel i have), but its getting to me once again. It hasn't gotten any worse but just the fact its still there is really beginning to get to me. The way it looks on my arms/hands means that i dont wear short sleeved t shirts and feel conscious whenever my hands are showing (so generally they aren't). And i dunno, just having that consciousness is really getting to me, i just wanna be able to walk about and not have to worry bout how it looks or if its dry, or in some cases it just plain hurts because i've cut it whilst scratching.
Then there's the fact that i have to treat it. Everywhere i go i have to bring cream with me, its just such a pain. I seriously cannot stay over someone's house because 90% of the time i wake up and the dead skin is there and it just feels terrible. I wanna be a teenager, if i go out for the night, i wanna be able to wake up at a friend's house and not have to worry about how terrible i feel in the morning because of it. Also the fact that every night i have to spend 2-3 hours getting rid of the dead skin. It sounds disgusting (i guess you could say its not the most pleasent experience). And when i'm tired because of ive either been out all day (like today), or just had a lot of homework. It just really is something u dont wanna do, but if i dont then i just wont be able to go out the next day. And the fact ive had to deal with all this, and other crap that it brings for 6 years now is just really getting to me. I wanna be normal.
I dunno, just the constraints its putting on my life is really getting me down, like i said, i just wanna be normal.
Take this as an emo thread, take it as whatever you want, i just felt like i had to say it.
Is this what those PMs were about? It rings a bell lol.
Is there no way it could be treated with some crazy advanced laser surgery? I know if you were to go to the doctors and told them how down it was getting you (it applies to anything really) they are generally more keen to help you sort it, faster and far more effectively than they would have done originally, so that might be worth doing.
Also I highly doubt people notice it as much as you think they do. It's normal for you to be very concious of it, but in truth people probably pay little attention to it. You just have to use that and try to build some confidence.

Yer pretty much. Times never change :P
The scarring can be treated (although there isnt any on my face which is where it was worst), but the main parts im actually conscious of are on my arms + hands and its still there. The only treatments doctors have are steroids which **** up other stuff and have some nasty side effects so nty.
And they probably dont, but really it does not look nice on my hands especially. A bit better when its moisturised but when its dry (which it generally does get during the day, even wit my cream with me), it just really doesn't. I probably could be more confident about it but hey, guess im not.

In my opinion, you're letting your condition get the better of you. Do your absolute best to forget about it; it's only as visible/noticeable as you let your mind allow. Yeah, you can always cover it up (hands being an exception), but you should try and keep it from getting you down. If someone has a problem with you because of your condition, they're obviously not worth your time and thus you shouldn't associate yourself with them. As much as you wish it wasn't, it is a part of you.
It feels like I'm beating a dead horse, so I'll keep this simple: Forget about your condition and live your life as if nothing were wrong. Your self-consciousness about it will diminish once you do.

You're letting it get to you, some girl at my college some stuff over her face, burns or something. She's fine with it and she can't cover any of it up. They'll always be someone out there in a worst condition than you, chin up.

I'd go out and try not worry about it. Like don't hide it, people look once then not again.
Have you spoken to a dermatologist? If so, why don't you try and see them again and explain how it is making you feel but say you don't fancy the steroids because of the nasty side effects, I'm sure they could offer you something.

Go to your GP and explain how it's making you feel, then ask them to refer you to a dermatologist, usually they will if they've seen you about the same condition previously.

Yeh i do try and do that, but its not just that. The main part that annoys me the balls out of is that i have to spend like 2 hours on it everyday. And considering its at night its just like i really cba. And after 6 years it is incredibly tedious and is getting me down.

I used to look (in my mum's words, not at the time obviously) that i "looked like a severe burns victim". I did used to go to school like that (had no choice) and got some abuse from it from ppl who didnt know me. I got on with that but now im growing up a bit and as one does, gets more conscious about their appearance.

Same as above really, i try. I do.

Yeh i did already, they told me that what kind of eczema it was (that helps a lot, loljk.) and then offered me steroids. There's stuff that 'helps' it, which i do, but nothing that cures or helps the appearance/feel of it.

Yer "aqueous cream". Ive tried like all the others that the doctors have (that have no steroids in them) and that one seems to feel the best :P
