Hello everybody! I recently obtained an iPad WiFi, 16GB. I'm a student, and I can't afford applications at £5/each, I decided to look into "hacked" apps.
I read a lot on the internet about iPad jailbreak, and I eventually succeeded! I'm going to be as clear as possible in explaining the steps to jailbreak a WiFi iPad on the most recent version of the firmware as of publishing, 3.2.2.
I have done this on a Mac computer, running 10.6.4, but the software will support Windows 7/Vista as well, read on!
I should start by getting the legalities out of the way:
Jailbreaking will void your warranty, if any step in this process goes AWOL (it shouldn't) you will usually be able to restore to an non-jailbroken software version.
Installing of hacked/jailbroken applications is illegal - although it's harmless to your device, it could seriously harm your moral conscience. I would recommend downloading hacked apps on a "try before you buy" basis only.
I do not know if this would work on 3G version of the iPad, but as there are no major hardware modifications I presume it would be fine.
There is a small chance your iPad may turn into nothing more than a £400+ paperweight.
Do not jailbreak if you do not feel comfortable doing so. The same applies for applications.
Tools:
Limera1n (http://limera1n.com) for your OS
Your iPad - it will need to have been synced to the computer you will jailbreak from at least once
Your Mac/Windows computer
Your syncing cable
I would also like to suggest that you should have previous experience jailbreaking an iPhone/iPod, this will mean you have a better grasp of some of the things you'll be doing here.
Step One:
Make sure you've already synced your non-jailbroken iPad to iTunes on the computer you will jailbreak on.
Connect your iPad to your computer via USB.
Go onto the Limera1n (http://limera1n.com) website, and download the version for your OS.
Double-click the Limera1n application.
Step Two:
You will be presented with a dialog box, which will give you just one button; "make it ra1n" - this is not a metaphor (well, not a very good one). Click it.
Step Three:
You will now be presented with an un-clickable dialog box informing you to hold both the Power and Hold buttons.
Step Four:
You will be told to release the Power button after 10 seconds, please make sure you keep the Home button held.
Step Five:
You will be presented with a dialog box telling you "your jailbreak was successful". You will need to wait a few more seconds before your device will be booted.
Step Six:
Once your iPad is back up and working, there will be a new app on your home screen, it will be called Limera1n (I don't know why the icon is blank, but that doesn't matter.) Tap it.
Step Seven:
Give Limera1n a few seconds to load.
Before long, the familiar Cydia icon will be on your display, tap it and follow the on-screen instructions to install Cydia.
I would recommend you reboot your iPad, but this is not necessary.
Step Eight:
Go back to your homescreen and open up Cydia.
You will get a dialog showing you the "modes" of Cydia. Select "User - UI only".
I would recommend you read the paragraphs down the right-hand side. If you're a tl;dr type: The iPad, being fairly new, hasn't been made by the same development dept. of Apple as was used for the iPhone - this is making porting the jailbroken apps from iPhone to iPad rather difficult for developers. But hang in there, they're getting to it.
If you are interested in getting hacked apps, please read on - but this is where it gets illegal...
Step One:
In order to make the hacked apps you will install sync-able with iTunes on your computer, you will need to install AppSync. This is not necessary, but handy if you would like to minimize the chances of errors when you next sync!
Step Two:
Open up Cydia.
Tap the "Manage" tab at the bottom of Cydia.
Tap "Sources" (the middle choice).
Tap "Edit" in the top right-hand corner.
Tap "Add" in the top left-hand corner.
Type the following URL: http://cydia.hackulo.us/
You will be confronted with a dialog informing you that what you're about to do is illegal (as if I hadn't explained that enough...)
Tap "Install Anyway".
Cydia will install the repository, where you can download Installous and AppSync.
Step Three:
After Cydia has reloaded, I would recommend turning off the iPad and turning it back on again.
Open up Cydia and tap the "Search" tab and type "AppSync for 3.2", download & install this application (don't worry, it's 100% safe)
Once installed, Cydia will reload. This is fine.
Step Four:
Open up Cydia again, for the last time now!
Tap the "Search" tab and type "Installous", download and install this application.
Once installed, quit Cydia and open up your Installous.
Step Five:
The App Browser in the official App Store doesn't work properly in Installous, it always displays a load of rubbish apps.
I would recommend you do your "window-shopping" in the Apple App Store, and then go over to the Installous App Store once you know what apps you want. Use the "Search" tab to type in the name of the app.
Step Six:
Apps specific to the iPad have a logo ontop of their icon, these apps are iPad specific.
The interface you use is similar to that of the official Apple App Store, except that when you click the green "Download" button, you will be presented with a list of links - do not click "Launch in App Store" - wait a few seconds for this to be populated, select any of the sources for the latest version of the app you want (the one at the top is usually the most recent).
Step Seven:
If downloading from FileDude, you may be asked to enter a captcha code to download the app, once this is done click the "Download!" hyperlink, and you'll be back in Installous, the app will be downloaded inside of Installous itself.
Step Eight:
Once downloaded (a notification inside Installous will be displayed - it's best not to close Installous whilst an app is installing, by the way) click the "Downloads" button at the top of the Installous app. Tap the application you just downloaded and tap the "Install" option. This will, obviously, install your chosen app.
You're done, have fun!
Using Installous (and Cydia) is fairly intuitive and simple to grasp if you've computer literate, so the best thing to do is fiddle with both of them and get a feel for them. If you don't understand anything, or I've missed out any large steps, please feel free to send me a message and I will help as much as I can.
Notes:
The "WinterBoard" application used to theme your iPhone/iPod hasn't fully been hacked to work with iPad yet, but this will happen soon.
Some applications downloaded from Installous don't always work, you will need to select another source for the app from the list shown to you after you've clicked the "Download" button, this is due to a "bad hack" of the apps.
If you encounter any problems, feel free to send me a message and I will do what I can to help you out. Thank you for reading and any feedback would be appreciated!
