Humans could be sent to Mars one-way as part of Nasa plans to permanently colonise other planets.

Scientists have confirmed that they are looking into the possibility sending astronauts to other planets by 2030.
It would take the volunteers nine months to get to the red planet, and they would leave knowing they would never see Earth again.
That is because it would cost too much to fly them back.
The mission, titled Hundred Years Starship, is likely to cost something in the region of £7 billion, and it is relying on grants and donations. The world's billionaires have reportedly been asked to contribute.

I want a return please. :( But yeah, this is very interesting but why would anyone do this?

Wow so they would just die there. I wonder who would do that :P

But I guess you'll get to see another planet which no one else has been on and go down in History.

I ask for like £2 and no one donates and they want 7 billion? gtho.

Should be interesting to see why anyone wants to do it though, other than the fame of doing it

Inseriousity.

Daily Mail: IMMIGRANTS SHOULD BE DEPORTED TO MARS

I can see the headlines now :P

Being serious though, it's quite an insane idea that we may be living on other planets soon. Sci-fi becoming science is amazing and terrifying in equal measure.

I think they should just wait until they have enough money :S

Now now we couldn't do that, there's no welfare state on Mars.

I'd do it if you returned to Earth afterwards, but there's no point just going there - you can't brag about it when you get back! :P

I can't really believe this though; "it would cost too much to send them back" is a rather, I don't know, generic response? If they can afford so much to send them there in the first place, surely they can send them back...

I'd do it if all my friends & family came, and I got internet & t.v...and as long as they could prove it was safe to live there ect, and that we had food and all that. But yeah it's insane...Doctor Who will be made redundant soon :O!

It would cost exponentially more. A modern day rocket can lift off up to around 50,000 pounds and it would require several million pounds for all of the food, medicine, rocket fuel etc. I personally would never go, on the 9 month journey out there you would be exposed to radiation and cosmic rays meaning Cancer is virtually inevitable, not to mention that you muscles would shrivel in a weightless environment on the journey over there.

Good idea, and when they're half-way there open a few windows and watch the show happen :P

NASA: You've been chosen to go TO MARS
Guy: WOO OMG I CAN TELL EVERYONE IVE BEEN TO MARS!!!!! WOO WOO
NASA: But were leaving you their for dead. You're not important and we can't afford it, so yeah.
Guy: ...
NASA: And if you say no, someone from the CIA will kill you.
Guy: ...
NASA: Suit up, big boy ;)

Anyway who would accept this unless they know they're going to die soon, and then NASA wouldn't even send them because they would be too weak as they're illl/old.

I think I'd probably do it to be honest. Being the first human ever to visit another planet is a very big deal, you can't comprehend how big of an achievement that is. No matter what I do on earth, I'd never match such an achievement so meh, may as well do it.

By 2030 I'd of lived most my life anyway cause after your 30, life goes downhill anyway?

Tbf i'd do it lmao

Its much more of an achievement to be the first person to die on another planet. Woop

Pretty bloody depressing journey, and screwed if something goes wrong during transit.

Yeah, but being stuck out on the cold of space having overshot mars or something would be worse in my opinion.

I could also say the same about you, you're screwed. Why? Because you're dying.

Didn't Dr Who predict man landing on mars by 2030 LMAO

Didn't turn out well for them!

The only thing that would down heart me about that would be not getting to set foot on a planet

But you've still been the human to travel furthest into space

The cost of sending a man to mars and back is very expensive. Sending them one way cuts the price into more than half. Getting them there is very easy, it is coming back that will cost the program much more.

They have proposed to send them to mars to complete their own missions and then every 2 years when the window to launch to mars opens, they will send stocks of supplies, and at the same time the astronauts on the surface will send back materials.

I personally don't think they will use this approach, because there are many more open.

It cuts it be at least 3/4, the weight of rocket fuel alone would offset it, double the weight and most of it wont be lost on lift off.

Yup, that is definitely a factor. Because when they send people to mars they will be sending a fuelled up rocket, with vehicles inside the stages that enable them to live on the surface. They will need a vehicle that will be able to achieve PDI (Powered Decent Ignition) to get them to the surface, quite like the Lunar Module in the Apollo Program. They will also need a rover so that they can move around on the surface and explore, and of course they will need some sort of pod which they can live in.

Inside that pod module they will need the instruments to make it an earth like atmosphere, like they have done with the ISS, so that they can get out of their space suits. It must include a water recovery system which converts human waste back into drinking water.

Along with their own instruments and tools needed to carry out research while they are there. All in all the vehicle will be crammed full. The mission control will launch knowing that there are only 2 available launch windows to mars every year, so with that in mind, they will make sure the astronauts have enough things to survive before the next launch window opens.

So that is one of the reasons they want to do a one way ticket to mars.

If they had to bring them back again, they would have to include more fuel cells and also a service/command module that would orbit Mars until the Ascent engine of the mars landing module ascended to dock with it again.

Solution:

1. Send a tonne of hot chicks to Mars.
2. Many men will want to accompany them.
3. More people are sent to Mars.
4. The male and female population reproduce.
5. The population of Mars increases.

Success!

Edit: Actually, it would be pretty cool to hear the accent of a Martian (similar to the evolution of British to American accent).
