Several cargo planes have been grounded at separate US airports as authorities investigate suspicious packages, the Transportation Security Administration has said.
The investigations are at Newark in New Jersey and Philadelphia.
The planes were taken to remote locations to be searched.
An unconfirmed report by CNN said that a bomb had been discovered on a UPS flight to Chicago from Yemen when it was stopped in London.
"Out of an abundance of caution the planes were moved to a remote location where they are being met by law enforcement officials," the TSA said.

Update: There doesn't seem to be any packages that are full on bombs, although packages that are suspicious causing a bomb scare. Maybe they are testing the security in the cargo division between a number of key points. As it would be a massive operation to send multiple of packages on different flights that would get unloaded at certain airports in the US and UK.

Watching this on Sky right now (it always amazes me how they have so many Skycopters all over the world, they manage to get their nose in everything! :P) Probably nothing, but I do have a lot of respect for the people who look into things like this and investigate everything in so much detail.
Charming, we're looking at a connecting flight through Philadelphia aswell!

This just came in:
BBC understands suspicious object found at UK's East Midlands airport was not a bomb, but was potentially sinister

I don't wanna go to Ireland now ;l lol. But at least they discovered them.
Doesn't look like anything too serious any more, but continuing checks have to be done I guess.

The reason why they attack us is not because we are 'free' but because we continuously meddle in their affairs. The United States has bases across the world (which it cannot afford) including bases in Saudi Arabia (imagine if say, China had bases in Scotland) and we invade countries to make them comply with our way of life - that is why we are targeted and until we close these foreign military bases, stop ordering them around and get out of Afghanistan it is only going to carry on - if not get worse and worse and worse.
Our politicians though will no doubt point to events such as this as an excuse to remove and destroy hundreds of years worth of civil liberties in the name of security - when the threat is very minimal and can mostly be eradicated by doing the above.

Politics aside, some of the packages were found to have explodable content in them.
So this was a terrorist threat then. It's quite bizarre but I guess they're trying to get a message out. I know that there's been a high alert due to fear that they're going to attack on the ground i.e. shooting in public places.

A US-bound parcel intercepted in Dubai contained explosives and bore al-Qaeda hallmarks, Dubai police said.
The parcel contained pentaerythritol trinitrate (PETN) - the same explosive used in a failed plot to bomb a plane to Detroit in December 2009.

Yeah, so it seems almost certain was a terrorist plot. Thank god it was foiled but I can imagine now it'll take forever to get a package from abroad as air mail will undoubtedly recieve the same strict guidelines as domestic flights now.

The reporting is shoddy may I add. The media carry on about how direct flights between Yemen and the UK are banned as of January 2010 but then continue to draw maps showing it flying from Yemen to East Midlands Airport.
Yemen > Cologne, Germany > East Midlands Airport, UK
Then maybe Newark, USA I think?

Turns out the one in Dubai had been flown on passenger jets, scary stuff.

Reading that news report I think it's scary to think that the explosives could not be detected by the x ray screening or trained sniffer dogs. I really don't think it's long before one bomb finally does get past us undetected, I mean look how close this was. We only knew about it because of an intelligence tip off.

I agree. What next? They could put them into pens or something. They're clearly getting more advanced. Very worrying.

David Cameron got the route right though! I think it's time where we put extra measures into place for cargo flights only as they don't have to go through the same systems and procedures like passenger flights too depending on the country.

scary
but how about we go nuke all the countries that are known to have terrorist bases in. That would help even if it does mean sacrificing many people. But they will obvz die as heroes
