Nation states are dead: EU chief says the belief that countries can stand alone is a 'lie and an illusion'

Unelected and unaccountable: EU President Herman Van Rompuy at G20 meeting on Seoul, South Korea yesterday

The age of the nation state is over and the idea that countries can stand alone is an ‘illusion’ and a ‘lie’, the EU president believes. In one of the most open proclamations of the goal of a European superstate since the heyday of Jacques Delors, Herman Van Rompuy went on to denounce Eurosceptism as the greatest threat to peace. Tory backbenchers condemned the inflammatory comments in the speech made by Mr Van Rompuy to mark the 21st anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. They said it proved that David Cameron would have a battle on his hands if he is to prevent extra powers being handed to Brussels.

Last night 23 Conservative MPs, including former leadership contender David Davis, rebelled in the Commons by demanding a referendum if the Lisbon Treaty is amended – even if ministers argue the changes do not affect the UK. Their call was defeated. Mr Van Rompuy’s speech in the German capital told his audience that ‘the time of the homogenous nation state is over’. He added that the ‘danger’ of Euroscepticism was spreading beyond the confines of countries such as Britain and was becoming a stronger force across the whole continent. ‘We have together to fight the danger of a new Euroscepticism,’ he declared. ‘This is no longer the monopoly of a few countries.

‘In every member state, there are people who believe their country can survive alone in the globalised world. It is more than an illusion – it is a lie.’ The Belgian equated Euroscepticism with fear, which eventually leads to war – echoing former French president Francois Mitterrand’s famous phrase that ‘nationalism is war’. ‘The biggest enemy of Europe today is fear,’ he said. ‘Fear leads to egoism, egoism leads to nationalism, and nationalism leads to war. ‘Today’s nationalism is often not a positive feeling of pride in one’s own identity, but a negative feeling of apprehension of the others.’ In a strong defence of the euro, he said the recession would have been far worse if France still had its franc and Germany still had its mark. Again employing the imagery of war, he said: ‘Just imagine the big recession of 2008/09 with the old currencies. It would have resulted in currency turmoil and the end of the single market. A currency war always ends in protectionism.’ And in a section about the fall of the Berlin Wall, he praised the ‘statesmen of 1989 – Helmut Kohl, Francois Mitterrand, Jacques Delors’.

Outraged: UKIP leader Nigel Farage was infuriated by Van Rompuy's comments

There was no mention of Margaret Thatcher, who as British prime minister at the time argued against closer integration. Last night UKIP leader Nigel Farage said: ‘Rumpy Pumpy is unfit to govern. This man is an overpaid catastrophe who wants to abolish our nation. The only non-nation is Belgium, his own country. Backbench Tories warned such views were now on the rise in Brussels. Conservative MP Douglas Carswell said: ‘At last we see the real intentions of the Eurocrats. If that’s what Mr Van Rompuy believes, he should at least get elected by someone before he says it.’

The only danger to peace is the likes of Herman Van Rompuy, who detest the national identity of a nation state and wish to see their idea of a nation state imposed upon us the people without ever giving us a say on their dream of a federal European Superstate. Herman Van Rompuy is unelected, overpaid (paid more than Obama) and unaccountable. Infact if you look at history, the wars in Europe have always been caused by people who wanted to end the nation states of Europe and create a supranational government of Europe.

The number of sovereign independent nations is increasing all the time, globally and why? because people are proud of their local identity, culture and customs. This man is dangerous and whats even worse is, we cannot remove him from office. Infact Mr Van Rompuy is the nationalist, nationalism is where you seek to impose your national ideas on other nation states (Orwell definition) - the likes of Van Rompuy are nothing more than nutcase EU nationalists seeking to impose their 'identity' and their rules on us.

Thoughts?

Shoot him before he takes over.

Ok but seriously not cool. I don't know exactly where I stand on the EU, some things are good, but this...no. I'm not liking this.

The EU's sole purpose is to turn Europe into a super state with Herman as the dictator and all those that opposed put into Prison without trial...

If you were really against it then you should have supported UKIP..

Its easy to take the piss and dismiss it, but the people behind it have declared their intentions time and time again;

'The problem which must first be solved is the final abolition of the division of Europe into sovereign national states. Wuthout this, any progress will be appearance only.' - Altiero Spinelli, 1941.

'We can never sufficiently emphasise that the six Community countries are the fore-runners of a broader, united Europe, whose bounds are set only by those who have not yet joined. Our Community is not a coal and steel producers association. It is the beginning of Europe' - Jean Monnet

'The Heads of State or Government, on the basis of an awareness of a common destiny and the wish to affirm the European identity, confirm their commitment to progress towards an ever closer union among the peoples and Member States of the European Community.' - Solemn Declaration on the European Union, 1983.

'This Treaty marks a new stage in the process of creating an ever closer union among the peoples of Europe.' - Maastricht Treaty on the European Union, 1992.

'No longer is European law an incoming tide flowing up the estuaries of England. It is now a tidal wave bringing down our sea walls and flowing inland over our fields and houses.' - Lord Denning, 1974

'An economic union will survive only if it is based on a political union.' - Helmut Kohl, 1993.

'The present generation should lay the final brick in the edifice of Europe. That is our task and we ought to get down to it.' - Joschka Fischer, 2000.

'If it's a Yes we will say "on we go", and if it's a No we will say "we continue".' - Jean Claude Juncker, 2005.

'European integration is fortunately a train moving too fast for anyone to stop it.' - Valclav Havel, 2005.

'Of course this is the end of British democracy as we have known it, but if it is properly handled then the people won't know what's happened until the end of the century. With any luck old boy, by then i'll be dead.' - Memo from a senior British civil servant, 1971.

+many more I can provide on request.

How much more stark do these people have to be until people like yourself wake up and listen? how many more powers have to be transferred from our elected parliament to Brussels until the likes of yourself sit up and pay attention? we've already lost total control over our fisheries policy, our agricultural policy, our trading policy, our work policy, our enviromental policy, our employment policy, our crime and justice policy, our energy policy - I mean we could be here all day listing what we don't run and those we don't run to an extent.

Interesting that you should mention being put into prison without trial, because although you jokingly included it - that now actually happens as a direct consquence of us being part of the European Union.

A student and four of his friends are facing years in a Greek prison after a holiday turned into a nightmare. Ben Herdman, 20, was due to start his final year studying business at Brighton University soon. Instead he and his friends were extradited this week, accused of attacking a man outside a nightclub in Crete two years ago and leaving him in a coma. They were flown to Athens yesterday. Lawyers for the five claim the case against them is 'ridiculously weak', but they were powerless to prevent the extradition as the Greek authorities used the controversial European Arrest Warrant to force them to stand trial.

They are likely to spend up to 18 months in a squalid Greek prison until their case is heard, and face ten-year sentences if found guilty. Last night the mother of one of the young men warned: 'Parents, be very afraid – this summer it could be your sons wrongly accused yet you'll be powerless to stop their extradition and immediate detention.'

18 months in prison without even being charged, he and many others in similar circumstances certainly aren't finding it funny.

from what is actually quoted there i agree with him.

i think for him to say that eurosceptism is dangerous is quite wrong but everything that's quoted in that part of the text i believe is probably true.

Meh, all I know is that if Herman Van Rompudinct were to die tonight, I wouldn't care and nor would very many people. He means little to me and everyone around him. He's just a face, he has no brains and the statements will act as catnip to people who strongly believe Belgium is a "non-country", seeing as these claims that individual nations within Europe cannot survive is obviously based on no facts. The UK, France, Germany and very many countries have a huge history of success - just because Belguim lacks any sort of interesting features or history seems to be feeding the idea that Van Rompuy knows little of what a country is and any sort of understanding of economic :P

Anyway, generic GommeInc reply: Pull out, stick fingers up.

Belgium has interseting features: WW1 cemeteries/Trenches and the chocolate <3_<3

but I agree with the rest, he's just a face - no one cares.

The chocolate would probably of been Dutch anyway, or maybe French/German :P

Which is why he cannot be taken seriously and why no-one particularly cares what the silly little man has to say. If he had some power, he would probably be remembered as being somewhat useful (even though the very thing he is a face of is far from useful).
