EU providing $21 million grant to IBM and others, funding research into cloud storage

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/clouds-2010-11-13-600.jpg

Clouds are beautiful things that fill our skies with wonderment, and as it turns out they make awfully good places to store our precious data, too. In that way European Union wants to make them even better, providing a €15.7 million (that's $21.4 million US) research project called Vision Cloud. It's set to tackle a number of related storage issues, including the ability to run applications within cloud storage, proper auditing and access restriction, and mobility of said data, so that it can be accessed from anywhere. IBM's Haifa, Israel think tank is going to be leading the effort, while Siemens and SAP will be playing nice too. Really, when you're getting paid to think about clouds, how would it be possible to not play nice?

As you can see the EU has spent more of our money, I think it is time we leave.

Yes I am having a laugh.

Is this a real article?

It sounds like a joke lol, but if it's true woah.

It is real lol. It's engadget.

Added a source - I don't normally post threads here.

By 'having a laugh' - I am talking about the constant anti eu threads.

Although it is sort of stupid, and I do agree - it did make me smile to see what they are spending money on now :P

I must admit I've had a very good laugh reading the replies in this thread. The article is taking the piss, it does not mean clouds in a literal sense. Engadget is aimed at tech nerds who would understand the joke not eurosceptics who don't understand anything about technology.

When you store files on the internet that's called cloud storage. The "cloud" is essentially the internet:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_storage

It has absolutely nothing to do with clouds in the sky and is the future of computing.

if anything this article and these responses prove that people read, comment and make opinion on articles without making an effort to understand what they mean.

I was wondering why you were all complaining about this, but appears none of you know that "the cloud" is the internet ^_^. I think it's a good investment since the internet is the future =]

I don't get why they need to research into some that pretty much already exists., or are they investing in the technology, which is a completely different thing?

Looks as though big corporations are involved, always useful to the European Union and to politicians in general - just like during the Irish referendum campaign, RyanAir all of a sudden switched from a generally anti-EU stance to Yes, the EU is simply the most fantastic thing since sliced bread - coincidently they had a court case coming up which involved the EU making a decision on their bid to secure some major business detail in their long-standing bid to secure a takeover of a rival airline. As the story goes, RyanAir then spent hundreds of thousands/over a million on pro-Lisbon propaganda.

You scratch my back and i'll scratch yours.

if i'm honest i think it is good investment. I imagine this would be useful for the EU itself to use as MEPs/Public Servants/The Public/Development agencies can store all their info in one place and for the systems to work seamlessly.

Or alternatively invest in a referendum thus resulting in the end of the bureaucracy in Brussels saving the public vast sums of money, and being generally useful for the man and woman on the street in regards to their own back pocket and not the back pockets of large corporations, corrupt organisations, unwanted supranational government and unelected and unaccountable politicians.

Speaking of huge sums of money and shady business/government, the EU budget the other day failed to get signed off again for the 16th year in a row by the auditors. The whole thing stinks to high heaven.

tbh leaving the EU and getting UKIP on board domestically would only play into the hands of big business here. Less regulation and 'hands off' won't curtail big business - it helps it and probably would lead to more corruption.
