Royal wedding: Prince William to marry Kate Middleton

Prince William is to marry long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton next year, Clarence House has announced.

William, second in line to the throne, will marry in London next spring or summer and live in north Wales, where he is serving with the RAF.

The couple, both 28, became engaged in October while on holiday in Kenya. They met at St Andrews University, Fife.

Prince William has given his fiancee Kate Middleton his mother's engagement ring, Clarence House said.

Prince Charles said he was "thrilled, obviously", joking: "They've been practising long enough."

Kate Middleton's parents Michael and Carole said they were "absolutely delighted" and "thrilled" by the news.

William has given Kate his mother's sapphire and diamond ring
Her father said: "We have got to know William really well, we all think he is wonderful and we are extremely fond of him.

"They make a lovely couple, are great fun to be with and we've had a lot of laughs together. We wish them every happiness for the future."

The royal engagement was announced in a brief statement released by Clarence House.

It said: "The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton.

"The wedding will take place in the spring or summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.

David Cameron said Prince William was ''extremely excited''
"He'll have to do his statutory royal duty, his royal bit, but he will be very much a working helicopter pilot with RAF search and rescue for the next three years, and Kate will have to get used to living in North Wales, although I think she's pretty much used to it at the moment."

Meanwhile royal commentator Margaret Holder said she thought the marriage would give Prince William the warm, cosy, family life he wanted.

"What he's finding with the Middleton family is what he didn't have as a child and I think that's very good for him.

"I think this is going to be a very, very good and successful marriage. And I think this will take the monarchy through well into the 21st Century. I think Kate is very modern, she's very relevant."

Prince William and Kate Middleton both started out on the same history of art course at St Andrews in 2001, although William later switched to geography. For several years, they shared accommodation with friends.

Miss Middleton, who is six months older than William, was credited with persuading the prince to stay on as he struggled to adjust to university life during his first year.

Prince Charles told reporters he was ''thrilled'' about news of the royal wedding
They graduated in the same ceremony from St Andrews in 2005 and their families joined them for a celebratory lunch.

The couple's relationship was exposed in 2005 when they were photographed together on the Swiss ski slopes of Klosters.

They split briefly in 2007, but more recently Miss Middleton - who has no royal or aristocratic family connections - has been to several official events, heightening speculation of an engagement.

Miss Middleton is the eldest child of businessman Michael Middleton and former air hostess Carol.

She was raised in a modern five-bedroom detached house in the Berkshire village of Bucklebury and her family, who are self-made millionaires, run a mail order toy and party goods company.

The couple will marry in the year which would have marked the 30th anniversary of Prince William's parents' wedding.

Agreed! Great stuff :)

Just read about it all on Sky News. William is 2nd in line to the throne.. she's done well! :P
The media are saying that she'll be the Queen, so does that mean they'll be King & Queen at the same time?.. and if so, why doesn't it work like that for Phillip?
Thanks! :)

Thanks! :)Just tradition really, the King is typically more important than the Queen so if Prince Philip was King, he'd more powerful than his Wife who is Queen when she is infact the Monarch through blood rather than marrying into it.

Sounds good! Can't wait :P

And obviously there will be big parties - and yes she will be Queen.

And Philip, as said, is not Monarch through blood.

They've done just one interview with ITV News (William requested a specific interviewer; Tom Bradby) which is quite an interesting watch. It's really nice to see such a gem of a story in the middle of the amount of rubbish in the media these days. A truly iconic British marriage.

Should be some nice articles in the papers tomorrow; the amount of camera flashes were crazy! :)

As much as it is good news, how many days / months / weeks / years(?) are they going to be in the news regarding everything they are doing, which will get annoying!

Ew, why would you want an interview with ITV? Bring out the Beeb!

That's what I thought! William asked for a specific interview with Tom Bradby; a journalist he's known for several years, so I suppose that's why they've selected ITV. Seems rather odd considering the BBC is regarded as the "main channel."

Some info there - he's an old friend :)

Congratulations to them both and thank god we have the Royal Family, can anyone imagine a President Blair and his wife Cherie lording it over the rest of us from their Presidential Palace (Buckingham Palace) - shudder the thought. The media sure is overdoing this one though just as they do with all celebrity tinted stories - far more important things go on that aren't even given a mention. The newspapers are at it aswell but not as bad the likes of the BBC who only seem to report tripe whereas the newspapers at least report some interesting stories.

Goodluck to them both though, hope it works out well. :)

Compare the main news pages of the BBC and the Daily Mail.

I agree its over the top but the BBC is far from the worst, most of the Daily Mails page is dedicated to it.

I mentioned the newspapers who are just as bad (that includes the Mail and i've made that pretty clear, but I like the Mail because of its journalists and the comments sections) but at least they run other side stories, for example if you watch BBC News or Sky News for that matter you'll usually only see one story being stoned to death by the news channels (the Labour Party conference when the BBC fell over themselves as Ed Miliband was elected leader) along with constant rubbish on how the seas are going to rise and we are all going to die - totally ignoring any other side of the debate.

The media is all dumbed down, but the news channels are the worst. British news channels should follow the example of RussiaToday who have (from what I see) fair reporting and they report a range of issues across the world and show both sides to all arguments.

Reading the Mail is like attempting to be cultured by reading a Biff and Chip book. Horrendous newspaper. Even The Sun is more credible.

I want to be happy for them, but tbh, I'm not. In my opinion they looked really awkward with each other - I give it 5 years max!

I read today that Prince Charles is going to foot the bill! How nice.

Oh but wait, they also said the taxpayer would be paying for the security, which they reckon could reach £20 million.

Yeah I know that they've been together for a while but I also know that they split up which makes me think there is some issues there. Marriage can be a bit of a curse as well.

Don't know what you've been watching. They've been together 9 years (despite a blip in 2007) and they look as comfortable as hell in the pictures and interview; even the newspapers have noticed :P

I suppose it's inevitable that Kate will end up the same as Diana - she's going to become one of the most photographed women in the world (alongside Michelle Obama, Carla Bruni, etc) but I do hope some respect is shown. Despite the Daily Mail being an atrocious paper, I decided to have a flick through yesterday and they had some nice comparing going on - showing Kate next to Diana. They are so similar in the way they act and dress. She's going to be a hit with the nation.
