Hey,
PLEASE do not argue or get in to fanboy crap here.
Basically I am stuck behind getting a PS3 or xbox. More of my friends have xboxs - but I am a pc gamer and have never found this a massive problem - when I only have two real life friends who pc game like mad. A fair few friends have PS3's too.
I understand xbl costs, whereas you can play on the psn for free.
A lot of people say the psn is awful compared to xbl. Is this true, or has it improved? Is the psn catching up and improving, or are sony being a bit slack when it comes to make the psn as good as xbl?
Thanks for advise - +rep

I've never understood the whole "Xbox LIVE is better" thing. Both have perfectly smooth online play, stores and chat features. PlayStation has an internet browser and BD Live and costs nothing, so that's the option I'd always go for.

Personally, I think the 360 has a lot more to offer in terms of online usage, but on the other hand, Sony are catching up very quickly and it's free to play online in the first place (+ no annoying 13 year olds screaming down the mic ;))
I have to say though, 256 player online (on the same map :O) on the game MAG is something you won't see on the 360 :P
Overall I prefer the PS3.

Thanks very much Tom - I must admit my fear with xbl is that it is the console of choice for 11 year olds, and I prefer to play with older users who don't get ******ic over winning (I know that could happen on both) but anyway :p. Are sony updating their software etcetera a lot to ctach up etc then?

Couldn't quote both of you on my mobile, but anyway.
Thanks Misawa really appreciated - its quite difficult to make a decision - especially when I always doubt people who say one is hugely different to the other - but can never decide in the end :L
I think the fact that the ps3 doesnt come with a headset is the main reason the kids who have a ps3 dont scream down it.

Im getting a ps3. At first I was going to get 360 but decided to get Ps3 due to cost of live ect and he fact that as long as your wireless is good the online is just as good as xbl.
Plus more of my friends have ps3. How I'd make the decision is Is I'd you want to pay £40 a year for xbl. Doesn't sound much but it builds up.

A few of mine have said this recently too.
I think the PS3 is probably the better choice overall, with the free PSN and stuff; I only got an xbox because more of my friends have it lol.

Lag is down to their connections. I've literally never had it once on the PS3.

If you prefer your ears not hurting then PS3, otherwise Xbox, (for now at least) you get stuff earlier. The easiest way is just to see what your friends have, there's no point choosing one when everyone else is on the other.

That's where Sony succeeded.
Edit: This guy made a twelve part series comparing the two consoles, this part was on the online gameplay:

I'd recommend watching the whole thing as there are lots of good points.

Online wise, theyre basically the same. People say its laggy, which it isnt and I only lag when my brother hogs the internet with youtube. It has decent offerings. The only thing which it sucks at is the PS store and its lack of decent games, there are a few but xbl store thing is probably better. But I dont know if that counted :P
What games would you play?

Cheers. Yeah 5 years on XBL is another £200

Let's be honest, if you did a questionnaire in a school the majority of younger kids would have an xbox over a ps3.

Hmm - I will look in to reviews for this :)

I would be playing most types of games, although any FPS games would be on my computer - I prefer the mouse for those sort of games!
There are more kids at my school with ps3's than xbox's

Not trolling or anything, and this only really applies to me, but I find most of the games I want to play are actually on PS3, like MAG, GT5 etc, then it also has BluRay as standard which is actually one of the deal breakers for the 360 IMO

When it comes to the people who claim that xbox live is better than psn, the majority of the time it's people using the logic "If it's more expensive then it's better" when this is constantly proven untrue in many cases.
The case of lag - people make these comments without actually knowing what they are saying in the first place, particularly because the network isn't what you connect through when gaming, it's connected to seperately just for your login details and stats. When you experience lag, for example on COD, people claim that it's worse on psn than xbox live, when they both use the exact same method of game hosting.
Imo the PS3 is the better choice when buying at this stage, the online community is bigger and even though it's been selling for a year less than xbox the number of ps3 sales is due to overtake xbox by the end of 2010.
Another thing to consider is the xbox's computing capability was reached a long time ago, whereas the PS3's hasn't been hit yet. With 50GB disk sizes (and with a potential firmware upgrade in the future up to 1TB disks) then textures can have a much higher resolution.
Just my 2 cents.

I could name 100 people in my year with an xbox and 10 with PS3's
But then my year are ***** lol
List what exclusives you'd want on each, buy the one with the bigger list.

I appreciate all of your help guys :)
I decided to go with the PS3 - getting a bundle with GT5 and Fifa 11 :)
Bit late, but heres my two cents, and just before you start 'xbox fanboyyy!1!!' i have both, and played them both a fair bit.

In my experience, xbox live is a lot smoother, easier to get in games, and updates don't take forever to download. The chat and party features are alot better, especially with the latest dashboard update that improved chat quality, and alot easier to navigate. On the otherhand, I would say that the playstation store is easier to use, and the fact you don't have to buy microsoft points to buy games and stuff is alot better. Also, It would have made alot of sense to add an internet browser to the xbox. And I don't get why they didnt upgrade the specs on the new xbox, its just a new shell really.

First of all, are people unable to press the mute button, its a one button press in most online games now, failing that you could go in party chat and speak to friends in there..on different games at the same time! Secondly, the only reason theres like no 12 year olds on psn is because theres no mic out the box, so basically noone speaks on it. I've sat in many a cod lobby on the ps3 where noone has a mic, or if your lucky one or two people have one.
I have to say though, 256 player online (on the same map :O) on the game MAG is something you won't see on the 360 :P
256 player sounds good, but really, its far too many, and MAG is a horrible, horrible game.

Again, just press the mute button.. but true, get what you're friends have, the whole point of online play is to chill out and play with some friends.

The thing is though, the majority of games companies, making big multi-platform games, are developing for the xbox then porting it over to the ps3, not making use of its full potential, because of how hard Sony made it to get a hold of dev kits, and how much popular the xbox is, and because xbox coders are alot easier to come by than ps3 ones, making them alot cheaper in wages. Don't get me wrong, the ps3 should be winning 'the console war' hands down, but it just doesn't have the backing, and doesn't look like it will any time soon, from developers.
I think PS3s have been outselling 360s for a while now.
Really? I have one friend who's got one, I'm on a gaming software development course at uni, and im the only one with a ps3, the rest are pc and xbox gamers.
But yeah, I would go for the xbox, just because everythings alot simpler to use and in my experience better quality. Although if you're a pc gamer, you might feel a bit more at home with the ps3 - it just feels like a pc to me, the menus and stuff.

This has been changing a lot in the past year. As you'll see companies like Valve are developing for the PS3 now. This may have been the case at the start, but the PS3 is catching up fast. Like I say, xbox is past its prime, so developers have hit the barriers with it. Games were ported from xbox because they're lazy, and as we've seen with the likes of FFXIII games are starting to be ported from the ps3 to xbox.

It's really not, its so horrible and clunky, the graphics are crap and people camp in the one spot guarding doors out of your spawn..all the time :l

Like I said, ps3 should already be ahead, maybe they'll get a boost from developers like valve, but the big games like call of duty and assassins creed arent going to be developed primarily for ps3 any time soon. Also, I wouldn't say the xbox is past it yet, the graphics are still getting better, its not really maxed out yet, but I still don't understand why they didn't upgrade the specs on the new xbox, and with kinect there'll be a big increase of casual gamers, probably moving over from the wii.

Because it wouldn't be an xbox 360 anymore? And that would mean games made to run on that wouldn't work on the old 360. Otherwise yes they did upgrade the specs for wifi and storage space etc.

Not necessariily, they could upgrade the RAM and processor then they could make it like pc games, where the old xbox could detect what it could run and couldnt, and the newer xbox could run it fully specced. But I guess that's totally against the whole 'simplyfy everything' strategy microsoft are going for now.

It also means that the devs could lose alot of market as they used a newer dev tool or something. And for those with an old one who buy a game which wouldnt run, it would lead into hassle of having to return it and possible refusing by the store etc, just more hassle then its worth. Also, it would be an entirely new system pretty much.

In theory it seems simple but that wouldn't work at all, instead it would cause all sorts of problems.
I think it's what many of you have mentioned already. Many more people I know own Xbox's therefore the online play can be seen as more fun as I can play with more of my friends. Although I have a PS3 I'm quite happy choice, I've never been one for making friends anyway! :P
