it looks ugly now with the white and the bar at the top doesn't feel right. It was grand before.

That's not gonna be permanent :P Contrary to what the forum apparently says we upgraded to vB4.0.8 last night and it's caused a few problems in the template which Jamesy is trying to get through and fix! So I'll move this to the bug tracker so he can find it and get on with it!
