Shocked there isn't a thread already :O
Australia and England playing the famous tournament in Australia, starting in Brisbane this evening.
England won the toss and chose to bat, currently 20-1 after 7 overs.
England lost Strauss for 0 on the 3rd ball, hard loss but not too bad, we tend to make bad starts.
:O how can i have forgotten about the ashes!
C'mon England... not the best start but we'll surely improve ... i hope (h)

Not an amazing start really, all out for 260 following Siddle's hat-trick.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/hi/english/static/cricket/statistics/scorecards/2010/11/85860/html/scorecard.stm
too many ducks in there for my liking, Australia were 25-0 at the end of play, let's see where we can get tonight.
Siddle :@
At least we got 260 runs, maybe we can get them out early tonight.
Yesssssssss. Hat trick! I was watching it and I was very happy. Goodluck.

Terrible start, had a feeling Strauss was going to get out early but the third ball? Whole team had played so well before this but once again its down to our bowlers to rip through Australia tomorrow, also we were 100 runs short of what I expected

Yeah I thought we'd get around the 350-400 mark, shame we didn't. Strauss has a habit of going early in big matches though :P It'd be good to get them out for around 300.
shows which sport is more valued in this section haha.
anyway Australia's game so far unfortunately but i think we may make progress today and it will me tight again hopefully!
I agree and hope we can get them out for less than 350 & hopefully take control by having a good 2nd innings...
At least if England do lose this there's still 4 more tests to go & win :D

Still im just hoping we draw this test, but fat chance considering 4 days to go and we are already on australias first inninings. Ah well good to see the support out there in Aus, hoping to go to one in four years time!

It was 86/2 ... nearly for 3 as the new guy dropped the catch and you thought you would get 300-400? Lol. I stopped watching at Lunch and predicted 250 all out. 260 was close. No way can England get 300-400 after 86/2
Hoping Australia wipe out the defecit before the end of Day 2 and get a 50-60 run lead. Then get a minimum of 200 run lead and have 2 days to bowl out England and get whatever runs they will require.

Watson out for 36, caught by Strauss (bowled by anderson), two LBW chances bowled by anderson too so it's looking a little better, Anderson seems to have found his stride.
220 / 5 (40 runs behind). Hmmm still got a good chance but need to get them out for no more than 350. We need to get Hussey out before he gets past 100.

Woke up and saw the score, feel much better about our chances now. Hopefully the conditions tonight will be overcast and muggy, so our seamers can get some swing, if we get them out for 280-300 and we then bat till tea on day 4 I think we will win.

We had quite a streak just after lunch, with one of the first balls taking Ponting and then Finn's first wicket of his Ashes career. I fell asleep after that but it doesn't look too bad. We need to get Hussey out and if we can take them down for about 300 we'll be ok.
Wow, Anderson is doing some really good bowling up to yet - don't know how we've not got at least 1 wicket!
236/5 - trailing by 24 runs

Actually I quite liked the England cricket team but half the players are so cocky its unbelievable and they lack manners. Anderson, Strauss, Collingwood etc are great. Broad, Prior and KP are cocky morons.
I like those who play the game the way it is supposed to be played - honestly and with respect.

Incredible second innings from England, it's a damn shame we can't bat like this in the first innings often! It'll take us to a draw but nothing more, as we'll need to get another 100 or so runs tonight and that'll take us to lunch, we aren't gonna get ten wickets after lunch :P
I think what makes the Ashes such a good series is that Australia and England are so matched in level of performance that you simply cannot predict who'll do well where or what's gonna happen.
I don't think it's worth arguing that one teams better than the other because it's simple, they aren't they are evenly matched and that's what makes the Ashes exciting.
Woke up this morning expecting to be nearly all out but once i saw the score i was like OMG get in there!
The fight back is on :D
C'mon England

I doubt England will declare hat all (I'd like them to go for the win but what's the point in risking a defeat?). I think this game will end before tea unless Australia bowl us out before then.

A draw is always better than a defeat so they should keep batting for as long as possible unless they are going to really go for it and get quite a few runs in front then maybe declare and try to bowl them out quickly

517-1 what a score in the second innings, shame we didn't do that in the first innings eh? I thought they'd continue for around an hour after lunch which they did.
Funny how Australia struggle to get a wicket all day and then England bag one not too long after taking over. Glad Ponting & Strauss saw sense to end early as neither team were gonna get anywhere.
Nicely saved by England and Alastair Cook - what is there to say?
I couldn't believe it myself, i thought that we would bat through but at least lose some wickets but 517-1 thats amazing!
Cook getting 235... wow brill again!
Lets hope that they've not scored all of these runs to early and get none in the next match!
that was such a good demolition! If only we hadn't messed up our first innings we would have had the first test and it would have really set us in good stead to continue! Oh well we just have to keep going as we are and if we can get the wickets early to prevent the ball going dead i think we can win the next one well :-)! Nice to see records falling all around in Gabba last night aswell in favour of england!

Hopefully we can make use of that but I won't be sure of that until after the second innings.

Theres only 2 days left and England have a lead of over 300 runs... so it would mean Australia needing to catch up and then get a good lead to make England bat again (should there be time left)
If England declare now then they have 2 days to try and bowl Australia out for less than 300ish thus winning the test or not getting them out for a small lead which England can then make in the 2 days which are left
:D:D:D
But wouldnt it just make more sense for england to just go for it and not allow australia to bat for the next 2 days? or isnt that how it works?

To win the game we need to bowl Australia out in their second innings for either less than the amount we have, or not much more than we have. If we don't bowl them all out, we lose.
If we bowl them all out for under our runs total (this takes into account their 250) so say if we declare now and bowl them all out for under 300 we win by an innings, as no matter what happens they can't top our runs.
If in their innings say they get 400 (this is saying if england declare now as it stands at 550), which I think is quite likely - I do not think we are going to be able to bowl them out as easily as we did in the first innings. So if this happens they take a lead of 100 runs. We then have to use our fourth innings to make 101 runs and they have to try and bowl us all out, if we make 101 we win, if we don't make 101 and they bowl us out they win, if they dont bowl us out in the latter situation it's a draw (as it is if we dont bowl them out innings 2).
Right, I used scores in there to make it make sense, ignore the scores as they weren't correct but helped explain.

Not awful, with only one frontline batsman left to get out, unfortunately it's Hussey who has played well throughout this series. Hussey has always been the difficult one for us to get however Australia seem to fall apart when we do get him, so take Hussey early on I say!

The clouds are gathering and it's scheduled to rain at 00:30-1:00am our time. Gives them max two hours to get Aussie out, hopefully the rain we clear for an hour during the Tea session. It's essential England make and take big chances in the time that they have out their this morning.

Apparently Broad is out of the series with a side strain.

Actually, there were storms about 90 minutes later...
the forcasters were actually spot on.
If the Aussies had stayed in until Lunch, they'd've come out with a good draw.
Swan IS the number one bowler in the world. Undoubtedly.

Its actually Dale Steyn but I reckon a few more good games and he will be number one.
Also great performance from England, it appears to be we are firing on all cylinders and haven't just had to rely on our bowlers like usual. Shame about Broad but hopefully Tim Bresnan to come in and replace.
Rankings Schmankings!
Swan is so much better in my unbiased opinion!
i love it and it rained all day from after lunch so all they had to do was hold on for 2 1/2 hours in total! hahahahaha shame

Im just going by ICC Test Bowler rankings. He's hardly pants but I do agree would rather have Jimmy Anderson who is 3rd. So ****** off next test starts at 2am, luckily I finish college the friday next week so when I get back from going out can switch it on for an hour or so!
Surprised nobody posted in here yet ...
Aussies batted first and were all out for 268 & England are 29-0 in reply.
Tremlett & Anderson both got 3 wickets... so seems like it was a good choice putting Tremlett in to replace Broad.
So, looks like we are in control again, so lets hope we can get a good batting score again :D
C'mon England!
This thread isn't that active ^

England were all out for 187 :(
Australia are now 119-3 meaning that they are 200 runs infront...
At least we'll get a result from this test even it looks like the Aussies will win this one.

Shame our batsmen have failed but our bowlers should be looking to get aussies out for 250 - 300. Giving them 330 - 380 lead. This test is going to have a result but maybe not the result we want. Ponting has been another failure again, time to step down as Captain after this series

Some of the players played a match against Victoria (an aussie side) and didn't do too good, but i'd have thought they would still do well again, but again it could be australia playing better. Hopefully they will bowl them out soon and with not too high a run chase.

Agreed...Ponting should go after this.
And I think this could sway our way if we get them out quickly now and then just bat for the win. I mean we could maybe get 517-1 again? ;)

Hmm - looks like Australia are gonna even up as score is currently:
Australia 268 & 309 v England 187 & 81-5
It would appear that the wicket isn't very good for batting, as Australia's scores aren't fantastic - I would say we could push it for a draw but with 5 wickets already gone this match will be over tonight.
why isnt mark ramprakash playing? surely his current form would enable him to be in?
I think give it 1 hr / 1 hr 30 mins and it'll be all over... so 1-1 and we need to then win 1 out of 2 to regain the Ashes
Callum.

Keeping the ashes via a draw isn't enough! Bring on Sydney!
if you won the previous ashes then a draw IS enough :D
So if it ends with an aussie win and series of 2-2 then England still win the ashes :D
I wouldn't complain at a draw :D
If the Aussie fans have the same thinking capacity as the Americans when the word cup was on.. and Australia won at Sydney.. they'd think they won.
But i know Aussies are smarter than that.

477/8... 200 odd in front and still 3 wickets to go...
there's no way now that Australia can win this test (my opinion) as they would need to get us out quickly and then bat all day tomorrow and part of the day after and bowl us out quickly... something tells me this will not happen...

Phenomenal innings by Prior!
Shame about ol' colly though, he's had a bad series, but I hope he's not retiring just on that basic!
Look at Cook's form earlier this year, with all the papers calling for him to be dropped! and look at him now!

Quality performance from the lads, and I agree with your men of the series Deak, but I think Tremlett should be given a lot of credit too, having not played many tests before and to perform the way he did was good.
Looking to the future, who's gonna replace Colly?
