View Full Version : **** I dropped my iPod...

Conservative,

In my bath ;l

It fell off the shelf. I got it out within 5 seconds but the screen instantly went and I've tried turning it on & off, I can faintly see it but it's not doing anything.

I've put it on the radiator to try off but I don't want it to be broken. My Dad will murder me (although it's still in warranty...) so yeah :S

Is there anything I can do so I don't have to tell my Dad? I'd rather not be yelled at. If the worst comes to the worst we'll take it to the apple store and get a new one because it's still in warranty but I know he won't be pleased and will lecture me on keeping my stuff safe ect.

So yeah...is there anything I can do? Or has the water permanently messed up the electronics? :/

Probs take it off the radiator as it has a battery in it.

Should I just let it dry naturally?

Do not try to turn it on and off anymore. I dropped my old phone in the bath and after about 3-5 days of it drying, it started working again.
Leave it somewhere warm to dry and you might be lucky.

It doesn't matter that it's in warranty, accidental/water damage isn't covered by the standard manufacturer warranty.

Okay thanks.

Damn my Dad will murder me then. ;l

Wait until it is completely dry, if it's still broken make up some ******** of how it broke and claim on the warranty. Although, if they take a look inside it might be obvious you dropped it in water.

Just to add...there's a white bit showing in the corner..Idk if it's where the screen has been moved/damaged by the water?

Here's a pic...

It's a goner IMO, but leave it to dry for a week and see what happens.

Don't bother returning it under warranty, iPod Touches have water damage strips that change colour in them (there's one in the end of the headphone jack you should be able to see). Also, for future reference, don't try turning something on when it's been for a swim :P

Lol okay. I'm so dead if it's bust. My dad forked out £300+ for it and said if you break it you're not getting another one. Then we had to return it because it wasn't restoring and now this...ugh. :l

I'm quite knowledgeable with iPod Touchs and water damage at the moment so I might be of some help... Back in October I had my iPod Touch playing at a house party, it was rather messy you could say. When I woke up and found it, it was full of liquids and smelt of cider so clearly it was water-damaged, and like yours it wouldn't function at all.

What I then did is put it in the airing cupboard for a few days in hope that it would evaporate (Alcohol is very good at evaporating fortunately) and would function again. This however was not the case and it made no difference, you also must not keep turning it off/on like someone pointed out. It's worth a try anyway.

I then told my parents who were just like "lol its your fault". Took it to the Apple Store, it was in warranty and I was expecting to pay for an expensive repair to it as obviously the warranty doesn't cover water damage. I then explained to the "Genius" what happened, he took a look at it and then sifted through my Apple ID and then said for my honesty he would replace it free of charge as a "one off". This was also because he could see there was a number of Apple products assigned to my Apple ID and I'd never had any trouble before, so being a decent Apple customer is definitely in your favour.

So I suggest going into the Apple Store, explaining exactly what happened and be truthful, as you're a teenager they may have some sympathy for you too. Apple then might be kind enough to replace it free of charge, if not you'll probably have to pay for a costly repair but it's better than buying a brand new one at least. And sometimes in life you've just gotta take a bollocking for your actions, it was rather stupid taking an iPod anywhere near a bath :P

best of luck.

I defo might try that approach if I ever break mine. If it doesn't get me a new one I'll just walk off and maybe try another store :P

Yow!

Fortunately I've never experienced damaging any of my electrical goods by dropping them in water (I broke an Apple keyboard by spilling syrup on it though).

I've always heard people say to take the battery out of the device, and then let both that, as well as the actual device sit out in the sun. However as this is an iPod that's going to be annoying to do.

Are you sure the damage is due to water though? I've seen some pretty hairy damage tests done to iPods. I've seen them survive being dropped in milk and then washed in the sync afterwards.

I once brought my dads ipod into the lake with me by accident. I tried drying it and not telling him for ages. In the end this caused a lot of hassle so i'd suggest get telling your da outta the way asap. My dad loves to lecture me so not telling him for ages just gave him more fuel to lecture me with.

I dropped my iPhone down the toilet it was in there about 5-6 seconds and i took it out, took the sim card out and left it in my boiler room at work (work in a pub) or if at home you can leave in a sock in aering cupboard or on a rad aslong as its in a sock. the first time i done this it didnt work but once i took out of boiler room it worked perfectly

Also, the apple genius' are nice so they may let you off if you do decide to be truthful. As my friend went in there the other day and he got his screen replaced for free but should have been charged £79.99 cos it was his fault...

Also if you take it to Apple you dont get a new one you get a refurbished one and how would your dad know if you sync'd it when you got it home

I washed mine in the washing machine. Dried it with a hair dryer. The backlight doesn't work but it still works and I can see everything fine.

Oo ok thanks everyone. I've had it sitting by the radiator all night (but not on it...) I'll go put it in the cupboard though.

& K-Lash...our local apple store is Oxford Street...and it's not like my mum will let me go there on my own ¬_¬ lol.

But thanks everyone +rep coming your way :)

Hahahaha good job lol,
Ok this is going to sound pathetic but give it a try.
Put your ipod in the Freezer for 30 minutes then let it dry in the sun for another 30.

Lol, it sounds like you want his ipod to never work again. If it was really saturated i am pretty sure that that the water expanding would damage it further.

As bethie said, rice is supposed to work. Put the ipod in a bag of rice, as rice absorbs water.

Yeah I spose...I just use my iPod for like everything...emails, habboxforum at 2am...ect. :P plus I was going to put all my songs on it for the 11 hour journey I have for my Christmas holiday -.-

Unlucky, bit silly of you to take it near the bath though!

Hopefully you'll be lucky with it; if not I suggest you just tell your dad rather than mess around with it further. As someone said above, normally owning up quickly is the best thing because if you don't parents will be able to tell you off further for not owning up x)

As others have said, it really is stupid taking your iPod anywhere near a sink let alone a bath.

When my old iPod Nano, a couple of years ago was allegedly water damaged they just did the usual tests for water damage. I don't think I got a very nice genius, as he just said there is nothing you can do a part from paying for a new one with a discount.

I have an iPod Touch now though, which is much more reliable ;)

Good luck.

I just had it in my pocket and put it on the shelf to the side of the bath (where I've put it during every bath/shower since I've had it) and it just slid off :'(

I hope I get a nice genius...if it dies that is...

I took an iPhone 3GS back to Apple three days ago, i bought one off EBay to sell on, a couple of days later it came up with multiple errors that i couldn't fix (think it was water damaged, but the water damage indicator inside the headphone jack had been replaced, sad much?), as you can imagine it was out of warranty but fortunately, they replaced it, as a good will gesture. Just explain to them fully what happened and they will probably replace it.

I'd imagine especially now as it's close to Christmas they are more likely to replace it for you.

Morale of the story? Don't use your iPod touch for pr0nz and don't **** near water.

That is all.

I know it's been mentioned but you really shouldn't have tried turning it back on when it has been in the water. I know it's a natural reaction but it's a big no no. Until you go to the applestore, keep it in bag of rice in an airing cupboard or somewhere like that, you may get lucky.

But because you turned it back on whilst wet, you may have blew it.
