Harriet Harman has praised ‘heroic’ immigrants who claim welfare payments in Britain and use the cash to support families living abroad. She said the Government should make it easier for them to send the money home and called for tax refunds to encourage more immigrants to follow suit, in particular those who paid for their children to be educated in the Third World. The Labour Deputy Leader, who is also the party’s spokesman on International Development, derided ‘those who say we should look after our own first’ in the recession and vowed to fight any attempt to cut the £9.4 billion overseas aid budget.

Last night the Government challenged her ‘bizarre’ conduct.

Her comments were made at a meeting at Southwark town hall in her South London constituency, called to find ways to increase the flow of money from Britain to other nations in ‘remittances’ – money sent by families who have settled here to those left behind. The meeting was attended by many local voters with Nigerian, Ugandan and other foreign backgrounds, as well as representatives of aid charities. An eyewitness said: ‘Harriet led a discussion on how to back up what she called the “hidden heroes of development through developing new policies on remittances”.’

Ms Harman said she had conducted a survey of constituents, mainly West Africans, attending her surgeries who were regularly sending money back home to sustain children and other relatives. ‘She said she had been amazed by how many were doing this,’ said a source. ‘Some were themselves in receipt of State benefits here and were still sending what they could abroad.’ Ms Harman said she intended to launch a new international survey to learn how other countries handled remittances to poorer nations to enable Britain to ‘make the procedure easier, even possibly with some sort of tax relief for those who send payments to educate relatives abroad’.

I wouldn't be praising anyone, i'd be asking them why they have come to this country to claim benefits and anyone with their head screwed on properly would then go and make a policy which would put an end to this - but of course she won't, because her ilk believe in this one hundred percent (well they are not affected by the formation of racial & cultural ghettos as they live in expensive areas) and this just secures more votes for Labour. Just what exactly is 'heroic' about screwing a country over out of welfare payments I ask you!??

..and why does this ridiculous marxoid have a head covering on when she is not a muslim and she is in her own country?

So we knew they were a gang of hopeless clowns when it comes to immigration/welfare (and everything else), but here we have it ever more clearer - the question is; is anybody still awake to pay attention? or are people going to ignore this as they do with everything else?

Thoughts?

Great, so now we're paying for foreigners that don't even live in this country with our benefit system?
This system is an absolute joke, we should be tackling problems in our country, the UK, all this money that is being handed out left, right and centre could have been put to good use. Instead we're throwing money all around as if it is nothing, generally to keep on the good side of the UN and EU.
The sooner this country is ran by an EU withdrawal party the better, in my opinion, at least they may have the backbone to help our own first rather than foreigners coming here for one reason, and one reason only - THE BENEFIT SYSTEM.

Any immigrants who come to our country should have to work for their money. I totally disagree with handing out money to these immigrants who come in and just depend on our welfare system. They get free housing & free money...what do the poor people from England get? A few grants and told if they don't get a job they'll lose their grants.

Personally I think giving any money to immigrants is wrong unless they have a job. Once they have a job and are contributing to society then they can claim child benefits and low income benefits or w/e...but if they come in, get a nice free council flat and then sit in their house living on money that could be spent on English people who are genuinely in need of it, or being spent trying to get rid of the enormous deficit this stupid *****'s party left us, it's a total disgrace.

True, its disgusting that an immigrant can come here and be top of the list for a council house, but you have to be either homeless, have children or otherwise prove that you are in dire need of a home to get one if your British.
We live in a truly amazing country.

I don't agree with her comments, considering we aim to provide 10% of our annual budget to charity and good will in a few years time? So shouldn't she be saying, as of "year" we pledge to assist your homeland more than what we already are, thus eradicating you sending our benefits money to them.

We need our economy to grow, sending money out of the country doesn't help in any way. This is precisely why Obama was wrong. His reforms budget was 900bil of money in tax rebates and cuts that meant people saved their money instead of spending it. Making the economy shrink.

The same will happen to us if we have crackpots like her in our parliaments!

All I can say is: **** her.

She may be fine with her bloated salary, but the rest of us living in the real world don't want our money to be ripped from our fists and given to immigrants who don't deserve it. If you want to send money to your poor relatives at home, go out, get a job and send your own money off your own back. There's nothing heroic about scrounging off a nation in debt, much like there is nothing heroic about stealing from a homeless person. And to think, people will still vote for this party in their millions - and the only reason for this will be because they have been put off the tories and lib dems. Since when was a government based on 3 parties a democracy?

I don't understand why Labour don't shut up at the moment and let the coalition get hated because of student fees and so fourth.

They're only at the popularity they are now because they didn't have a leader for a while.

I really dislike this womans values, something for nothing, a traditional labour value I guess. I think benefit money should be made to stay in the UK somehow, maybe have a 'benefits' account.

She's just one of those middle-class hippies who are endlessly stoned or something and lack an ounce of practicality. Maybe she should offer to donate some of her salary seeing as I'm sure she earns over the £40,000 threshold which means she's worse than Hitler in extreme left-wing ideology.

What a silly comment to make. Labour may gain a handful of votes but it'll also lose a number for these comments.
