Well I have yet to even send off my application because my teacher is seriously taking the piss with her reference. I wish she would hurry up and do the damn thing so I can get on with my life. Dammit, there isn't that long left. Getting worried, ahhhhhhhh! They all say submitting your application later doesn't put you at a disadvantage, etc, etc... but from the sheer amount of people who have already received conditional offers surely it must... Urgh, I don't even know what to think anymore. At least I already have my grades since I finished college ages ago. Goodbye conditional offers! So long as I get my application in on time. Whynowwhynowwhynowahhhhhhhhh!

On people waiting for offers to come back, just remember not everyone is back at University yet. Some offers may not appear until February (unsure on when the last final date they can be done is). I know it is frustrating but patience is the key and hopefully you will all get the course you really wanted :)

I know what you mean there, the deadline for the applications is 15th January and I know right away that certain universities such as Napier don't even look at the applications until that date. It's extra frustrating because I've had friends have unconditional offers already!

In Scotland the main set of exams we do, Highers, are taken and completed over the course of a year. Highers are probably about the same level of difficulty as an AS-level for you guys but the advantage is that all Scottish universities make offers based on Highers (whereas English ones make offers based on complete A-levels).

There are some disadvantages as well though. For example, most Scottish university courses are a year longer than their English counterparts. That said, you can miss out a year in some cases if you have the right Advanced Highers, the next qualification up from highers. To put Advanced Highers in perspective; they earn more UCAS points than an A-level and they are sat over the course of a year, just like highers, so it's the equivalent of sitting an A-level over the course of a year.

Still I prefer the Scottish system of doing things because it means there's a high chance of getting unconditional offers while you're still at school. Meaning I can relax knowing that I'm in and take off a lot of the pressure candidates with conditionals have, but still learn everything that an English candidate is learning (given that I take an Advanced Higher).

Does anyone know if it allowed for a University to offer you a conditional for more UCAS points than it says in the course details on ucas / site?

Just it tells me 240-280 on the site, put my predicted grades down as DDD and now they're saying the conditional is only if I get 360 :S Fair do's I can get it, but they state they're equal on their website. And other students are getting conditional offers on the same courses for less points.

Yeh it is, sounds like because of the way it's been done, that they have a lot of spaces and they accepted you just to fill them (unis are known to do that sometimes). Though they don't expect you to get in so they decide to push up the grades.

Accipiter
18-04-2011, 09:54 AM
Surely if I get better grades than those they've offered conditionals too at 240, and they accept them in, it's a bit of a **** system? since im sitting there with 360 ucas points unaccepted and they're getting in with 240 :S

all depends on your predictions and AS aswell. you do better at AS then they tend to want you more so they lower your offer and vice versa

unfortunately they can. It means that too many people have applied for the course and theyve had to upgrade their boundaries. the people youve spoken to might have had their offer decided a while ago but the uni might not have released them to UCAS. or they want to push you :P

Unsuccesful at Abertay because the course filled up :/ I'm actually gutted.

Anyone know if its worth contacting the Uni to ask about possible drop outs etc?

No harm with getting in contact in my opinion!

Thought this might interest you future first years. The Guardian has recently released the league tables for Uni's in Britain. Just click on the subject you are studying and you can find the Uni :)
