Ok im up for debate on this but is personally think public departments ie HxHD and HxL should have some sort of public recommendation stage at some point during the year. I know staff know greatly the ins and outs and the behaviour of the people that enter HxHD for instance but surely if forum members put forward some ideas and then staff voted on these the system would be alot fairer.
As i said Up to debate but please don't close thread :)

I cannot speak for HxL but HxHD will not be taking part in public recommendations. Unfortunately some things are just better left for our staffmembers to decide upon. HxHD staff, as well as its management team have the best idea of what to look for, and as we all uphold a consistant amount of activity in the room and keep in tight communication we know exactly what we're looking for.
If we utilized public recommendations it would be a mess, where we would have to start choosing to trust person A's word over person B's, start gauging how active Person A is in the Help Desk to see if their recommendation is sound, and there would most undoubtably be favoritism, a resultant popularity contest and of course people "running" to be nominated to become staff.
Having said that, though, if anyone ever wants to put in a good word about anyone at the Help Desk they're more than welcome to approach Lizzie or myself in private and speak their mind.

It's been a pretty consistent policy that members are not allowed to participate in the hiring, firing, promotion, or discipline processes directly. Obviously they can submit complaints/compliments, but at that point it has always been the realm of the management team to make the decisions. Sometimes discussion is allowed about the process by which hiring/firing is done, but discussing/deciding on specific cases has never been allowed. I don't think it's going to change and David gives a lot of good reasons why. Definitely an interesting suggestion though!

I can see the votes also turning into popular votes if the person is popular with other members which wouldn't really be fair on the other people either. Sadly I don't like the idea for that reason alone and always believer that any hiring of staff members should be solely done by the management team.
