And why is that?

A programmer (someone who know's a computer language), I think, would know what applications he'd like being honest..

And why is that?

import java.util.Scanner;

public class installPrograms{
public static void main(String[] args){
UserClass User = new UserClass();

Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in);

if(User.programmer == true){
for(int i = 0; i < KnownPrograms.length; i++){
User.install(KnownPrograms[i]);
}
}
else{
thread.postContent = "What is the most used programs people install when they first get a computer?";
User.post(thread);

if(in.hasNextLine()){
KnownPrograms.add(in.nextLine());
}
}
}

What do you mean in the bit in bold?

Windows 7 tends to tell you all the basics you'll need when you start it up. It'll chuck Windows Live Essentials at you in a Windows Update, so you can get Movie Maker, Windows Live Messenger (MSN/WLM) and other programs. I think Windows 7 had something in an update that allowed you to install whatever browser you want in a list, but if not:

http://www.google.com/chrome - Chrome
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/ - Firefox

It should also moan at you about the lack of protection (Anti-Virus). I suggest Microsoft Security Essentials, but there are plenty of decent ones out there (AVG, Norton has improved recently etc).

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ - Microsoft Security Essentials
http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage - AVG Free Edition

Then you get the other stuff, like:

http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/get-skype/ - Skype

Microsoft Office 2010 seems to vary in price. If you're a student go to:

http://software4students.co.uk - You can get Microsoft Office Pro Plus for about £35

If not, Microsft Office Home and Students Edition gives you the basics.

That's usually the bog-standard stuff you want.

Chrome
Notepad++
Photoshop - anything from CS2 upwards.
Avast
Winrar
Filezilla
Speedfan
Ccleaner
VLC
DVDFab
Logmein

Plus the obvious Flash+Java

Would have to be those I considered the first line of install on any new machine.

I find Windows 7 WordPad to be as much use as Word from Office, but obviously anything Vista and prior is awful in comparison.

You know what, I have never looked at WordPad for Windows 7 before you mentioned that :P It is like a simplified version of Word, pretty snazzy for something that comes with the OS.

When I used Windows I usually did:
Pidgin
Notepad++
Firefox (now Chrome I guess)
FileZilla
WinRAR
WInamp
Photoshop

Lol, you can get all of the paid programs you listed for free. But remember people, it's stealing!1!

That is why I said for all the paid ones except office "paid, but I didn't pay".

For some reason I always pay for windows and office. Windows because it has more features than anything else, and really isn't expensive. I pay for office as it really isn't expensive for what you get.

Whereas AVG isn't that expensive, but the benefitsb between it and three free anti viruses really isn't much.

To be honest, when, as a student, you get like 50 - 80% off the RRP, why not buy it and save you the hassle when it comes to updates etc?

£30 odd for Microsoft Office '10 Pro Plus is a bargain :P Might as well just pay for it - hassle free, get updates etc.
