Windows 8 Milestone 2 already compiled

According to a Russian website winreview.ru, via win8beta.com, Microsoft compiled the build "Windows 8 Milestone 2: 6.2.79xx.0.winmain_win8m2.xxxxxx-xxxx" recently. News of this build comes just days before CES 2011, meaning Microsoft might have a sneak preview for a select few, but the chances are very unlikely.

Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer is expected to present a keynote speech at CES 2011 the night of January 5, showcasing the company's consumer technologies. Microsoft is also expected to hold a press conference that afternoon prior to Ballmer's speech. The new OS is expected to be revealed at either event.

Windows 7 should have been a free update anyway, its a great OS but its just a working Vista (6.5, literally). Unless they're doing some Media Center improvements I'm sticking with 7.

I disagree with that, I did not mind paying for Windows 7 at all. It was a much better improvements overhaul including performance and features.

Although I just updated my setup which is now Windows free I do agree with Matt - Windows 7 is worth every penny and its performance was visibly better for me atleast, although I never used Vista after SP1 mind.

I bought Vista like two months before 7 was released and got the free upgrade through the post. Am I the only one?

I would say Windows 7 is what Windows Vista should of been and obviously there were some mistakes done by Microsoft's part while creating Vista which is a shame, although it is not a completely useless O/S. I do find Windows 7 much better and I'm glad that Microsoft have done what they have done within 7 as it's made it a fantastic operating system to use on a daily basis. I can't wait to see what they have for us all in Windows 8!

Windows Vista was a huge advancement in the technologies that were used in Windows, Windows 7 should not have been a free upgrade.

I hope Windows 8 isn't all cloud blased, it'd put me right off :(

Actually Vista and Server 2008 were 6.5. They share the same base kernel and applications.

Just like Windows XP shares the same version number as Server 2003.

The RTM's build number jumped to 6000 to reflect Vista's internal version number, NT 6.0.

Just like XP is 5.1 and Server 2003 is 5.2

Even though Windows 7 was a lot better than Vista, it should have been a free upgrade from Vista to W7, especially when MS admitted that W7 was how Vista was suppose to be.

Yep, that one :P They went crazy advertising that, and had it in the short cut area of the taskbar by default in Vista. They seemed to of not bothered hyping it up in Windows 7, even though it is just a novelty item :P

£30 is a lot for what is technically an equivalent to a Windows Service Pack update :P Also, Windows 7 Home Premium was £69 for the Upgrade Version. The full version was a lot more, but the upgrade version could sneakingly be used for the same thing anyway.

Yeah they didn't really show that off or not at all. More showing the new features of Windows 7 such as the Windows snap and so on! I know you could like get the full version of Home Premium for the £50* before it was released from places like ebuyer or something.

Hmmm, I can't remember what price ebuyer put on it :/ I didn't pay much attention to the price of it before it was released. All I remember is that Tesco were strangely cheaper than ebuyer, as were Play.com after release. Amazon.co.uk were selling it for £90 and so were many other places. This was quite a while ago, before they suddenly put the price up (about 6 months or so ago?) I got it from Software4Students or the official Microsoft one, so it was about £30 in the end :P

Forgot about S4S. Why don't they sell 7 Home Premium? I'd imagine that is what most people want.

I think I remember reading that Pro is good for students who want to connect their computers up to their college accounts, or something like that. There's a setting buried somewhere that lets them do something work related :P

The Virtual XP might be another student related feature that they focus towards students too. I guess they want to go for a happy medium between home use and extreme use (7 Ultimate), so Pro seems the best option.

Windows 7 Pro is pretty much Home Premium but includes more business-based tools, like being able to connect to a Windows domain network (where user accounts are stored on servers) which a lot of educational institutions use.
