View Full Version : System Build

I'd like to double check if this system will work and please give me any recommendations. (Hard drives aren't on there because i'm getting them cheaper from ebuyer, same with the OS). I'll be using this system for gaming and aim to keep it for a minimum of 5 years. (Buying graphics card later if you're wondering).

I've no idea if it'll work together as i've got no idea about building them but be sure to post a progress thread cause id like to see how it goes :)

5 Years is a tall order for any set of components.
It will all work together though.
Do you really need that internal card reader? I would get a USB one because those things are UGLY and will ruin the front of the case.

As on MSN, half the amount of RAM to 6GB for now, could also get a cheaper DVD-RW drive.
Other than that, once you've added your GPU you look to be good to go :P

Also note that SB is only dual channel. You'll only be running single channel if you use 3 DIMMS.
Are you planning to use the integrated graphics? If so, the P67 chipset won't work. You need H67.
That mouse looks poor. 1600 DPI?
And the keyboard looks like one of those generic ones at schools.

Does he plan on overclocking? I assume not since he didn't choose the K version of the CPU.

Nah don't really plan on overclocking, although for the £30 more maybe it'd be worth that plus the double powerful onboard graphics until I got a graphics card.

That's the problem.
You can overclock on P67, but can't use the onboard GPU
You can't overclock H67, but you can use the onboard GPU.

That sucks a lot. I think i'll go for the safer option and use the onboard gpu just so I can keep using my pc if my graphics card were to burn out. Can someone help me choose between these two motherboards. The case supports Micro ATX and I read somewhere that uATX can be the same but the dimensions of the boards are 10mm different. If this doesn't make a difference please just say so and i'll go for the one with more ports.

IMO you should wait a month or so for more motherboards to come out, I mean, look, OcUK only have 9 motherboards you can choose from.
P.S. Look around, OcUK is expensive.

I had my eyes set on Asus motherboards for the past year because the ones they have around the £100 price point seem to always have the features i'm looking for and are well rated for quality so I don't think there'l be more Asus boards in the next month that aren't here already. But I will look around for other prices. Although i'm trying to decide between those two still.

Ok. Here's the new list of parts, please let me know if theres still anything I ought to change. (Gone for the wired version of the same mouse which you can select about 5 different dpi's from, and removed keyboard cos all the gaming ones are american and I need a uk one). +repped Stephen and Recursion ;)

There is no need to get a K version CPU with H67 motherboard. Saves yourself a tenner. But then again, why not. It could improve the sale value of the chip if you ever change your mind.

K version has twice the power for onboard graphics as the non K version.

Ahh it does?
Good find :P
Definitely worth the extra tenner then. Why would they sell that increase for so cheap?

Extra £30 maybe :P
Also i've decided to cash out another £20 for an aftermarket cooler rather than use the stock one.

My order is on its way :) Should have the all the parts except hard drives and the OS tomorrow :) Once i've set it up i'll be sure to post a video of how quickly it boots into windows with RAID1.

RAID1 performance over a single drive is hardly any better

Write speed is the same, read speed is increased by up to 2x.

Depends how quick the drives are in the first place.
But if you need the redundancy, an increase in read is a welcome addition.

Yeh, I need the backup feature so I can continue using my pc if a drive were to fail. The drives are 7200rpm.
My tracking shows my items are in a van due for delivery in a few hours :D
RAID is not a backup solution.

System has finally finished all its configurating and the RAID has finished initializing itself.
I first set it up with RAID 1 and I got about 5.9 in the Windows Experience Index (WEI). I decided however to re-configure this and use RAID10 since i'd not only get the same amount of space and reliability but would be faster than just RAID 1 (for those who don't know, RAID 10 is basically RAID 1 and 0 put together).
Here is the system WEI (Using integrated graphics):
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/969/wei.png
As you can see the hard disks are the bottleneck, so maybe i'll add an SSD for the OS in the future. (And ofc buy a dedicated graphics card which is next on my list anyway).

Waiting on my Intel i5 2500k and Corsair A50 to arrive tomorrow. I decided I couldn't justify an extra £70 odd just for hyperthreading... then next month or the month after I'll get another pack of the same RAM to bump it up to 8GB :):
Got delivered to work today :D

I'm looking more forward to being able to use my old stuff as a fairly decent test bench lmao :|

Nah you're fine. 1.35 is the most you should go to for a 24/7 overclock. Mine's at 1.3V atm @ 4.4GHz I'm waiting for a new BIOS/EFI update before I do any more overclocking.

Select Android on the driver download page for the MoBo and it's under Bluetooth, they have an app for Symbian, Android, WinMo and iPhone (iPhone you get off the app store).
You have to have the BT GO! software installed from the AI Suite and ASUS' bluetooth drivers installed instead of the Windows ones though.

Seems like my bluetooth is broken.
Drivers installed but no bluetooth device detected. The bluetooth suite won't launch, either.
The asus site doesn't have a link to the AI suite either, LOL.
