woolworths that we know of was only in operation within the uk and ireland. there are other companies called woolworths around the world, and the one you mentioned falls within the latter i think

It isn't. Woolworths in Australia is a grocery store like Tesco/Asda here. They are not related in any way. http://www.woolworths.com.au/

Okay I've looked into it, the German one is linked to the UK ones it turns out. The name comes from "F.W. Woolworths" which is an American company founded in 1879. They then stated international branchs of Woolsworth in Canada, Germany, UK, Austria, Mexico and South Africa:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._W._Woolworth_Company

The US & Canadian Woolworth's went bankrupt in 1997 and that was the end of that. The UK branch then followed in 2009 (although the name rights were sold to "Shop Direct Group" and they continue online at www.woolworths.co.uk). The rest of the branchs in Germany, Austria, Mexico and South Africa continue to live on. The South African Woolsworth's is considered quite upmarket like M&S and also operates in Bahrain, Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Then there is the totally separate Woolworth's in Australia and New Zealand:

Bit of Woolies history for you all ;)
