I'm not sure if we've had this conversation or not before but I'm bringing it back up. Now I enjoy spending money when I've got it but I don't always have it and considering I'm currently unemployed that doesn't look like it's changing. When I do have money it'll either go on clothing, food or socialising. I buy clothing from stores like River Island, Asos and Topman because most of the time they're good quality but I have treated myself to a G-Star shirt and other branded items because I feel good about myself having a relatively 'expensive' item of clothing. It's probably not right but it's all about social status and the need sometimes to 'fit in'.
The question is however, which do you prefer? Would you go and get one item of branded clothing when it's possible to get three or four non-branded items for the same price? I've seen myself do this on a couple of occasions but overall, taking everything into account, I'd rather buy five £10 t-shirts than buy one £50 Lacoste polo shirt (as an example). How about you?

it totally depends on what the type of clothing it is for me. like, i'd rather get 4 okay quality t-shirts than one super awesome quality t-shirt. cause no matter how good of quality it is, it's still just a t-shirt. however if i were to be getting a winter jacket, something id be wearing for a good 4 months straight, id rather get one really nice quality one than a bunch of average-quality ones.

Well that's the same for me, actually. I mean I'd rather get four quality polo shirts than one branded polo shirt where they are only differentiated by a badge. I recently bought a double breast coat for £120 that will last me well over the five month mark, it's well designed and the stitching is superb. I'd have that over the current Primark (our Pennys basically) £20 fake double breasted coats they are selling. Good post +REP.

I myself would prefer just getting cheap stuff.
However, some none branded things usually cost near enough the same price as branded things in my opinion.
On Saturday I bought a jacket from primark (well my sister brought it for me as a late christmas present.)
Anyway, it cost £8.
A few months previous I bought a jacket in internationale, golddigga £12.99 and I still have it today and wear it near enough every day for college, I like them both but I would rather buy branded material for a cheaper price than a branded expensive one.
On the other hand, if i like the look of an item i will but it if its cheap - unbranded.
if you get me.
also having more of an item means you have more of a variety and not just one type, it means i can wear something different every day to college and also i have something for every occasion etc.
so adam i voted that i would prefer more none branded items.

I thought it was you, isn't it?
Ah I don't really buy really expensive brands so I would still pick the second option :P.

I go for branding clothing when it comes to things such as trainers, coats etc but for simple t-shirts ill just go for whatever looks nice whether its branded or not, i seem to have a thing for fred perry atm :S i just like the tipped bits on jumpers/cardigans although it tends to set me back like £40 a piece :l
Inseriousity.

My brother doesn't like non-branded clothing and refuses to wear anything with a) a rubbish brand name (he's a bit of a chav) or b) no brand-name at all.
Whereas I'm the complete opposite. Like someone said, at the end of the day, it's just a t-shirt or it's just a pair of jeans. It doesn't really matter either way. Plus if you look after them properly, the cheap clothes can last just as long as the expensive branded makes.

I find you can get the same look out of either River Island or Topman, you'll just be missing the Fred Perry logo.

It matters to some people though, I know a few people who might feel insecure if they aren't wearing branded names alongside a group who may be slightly better off wearing branded clothing. It reverts back to the thing about social status.

Well I can see his point ... people just need certain clothes for "certain times" etc. Does your brother post on here by the way too?

'pends though if and where you are wearing it for (say School etc etc)!!
All my clothing are designer, but thats pretty much because my mum pays for all my clothes still. I find that designer clothes are usually better quality and aren't produced cheaply.

When I have they money I go all out and buy myself a flashy, expensive top/pair of shoes or something. For example I remember when I was like 7/8 I had £100 (goodness knows how...) and went and spent £60 of it on a new pair of Nike trainers. The other £40 went on a new liverpool kit lol.
But if I only have £20 I won't bother looking much further than say, Topman or River Island, because it's not worth blowing all your money on one top.
However as I said, if I have the cash to do so, I'd much prefer a designer label than several cheaper ones.

I would be one to go for Well known brands because in my opinion they look nicer than normal brands well in most cases anyway. I would spend alot of money on clothes but i sometimes see cheap nice things and buy them too...
Tesco/primark/matalan :D no point spending £80-£90 on a pair of jeans.. its material which probably cost the manufacturer £5 a meter nothing different.. placebo i could pay £50 for some shoes or £15, theyll still keep my feet covered

+Rep for that haha
I tend to wear band merch all the time, I literally have stacks of shirts so i suppose that doesnt count as branding, but with jeans/shoes I definitely go for brands. I just feel more comfortable wearing shoes from an established brand, and cheap jeans just look ****

If i'm allowed to say I like Fed Perry, Henri Lloyd etc does this count?
I'd rather plump for quality stuff like this any day and like Ben Sherman, but it depends on what actual article of clothing!
i'd rather pay more but it depends... i really only wear j.crew and ralph lauren now

I don't think it's insecure. Sure, peer pressure will obviously have a role to play but some people build their reputation/popularity on their image and are therefore more likely to spend most time on improving that while other people build their reputation on other things such as academic work (like me, I'm a nerd lol) and therefore spend more time on that rather than worrying about designer labels.

how can you have 'non-brand' items? everything has a brand.. unless you mean a recognizable brand?
also how do you define 'designer'
Lol and I felt bad spending £20 on a shirt the other day. £50?? Wtf.
Most of the stuff I buy is just unbranded. Got a few branded things, but no one seems to care whether it's branded or not, it's just a shirt. But generally branded stuff obviously looks nicer so I'll buy some of that from time to time.

Stuff with huge logos is tacky, like Jack Wills. lmaoo I mean sorry but it's hardly a bespoke Saville suit or the latest pair of Louboutins now is it? It's a pair of pyjamas where 90% of the price is down to having the brand name in enormous lettering on the front.

non branded, designer. i would die if i was wearing a nice looking shirt and i go to take it off and the girl sees it's from walmart. i think that would do me in.

To be honest, I couldn't care.
All the brand shirts I've seen are pretty terrible.. I'd rather make my own if I was paying $50+ for it..
For me it depends on what the shirt looks like. If I like it, I'll buy it. Brand or no brand :)

basically depends what it is. I change t shirt every day: so loads of middle range ones. shoes: i have like 2 pairs at a time, so mine are fairly expensive branded ones always....jeans i tend to go for middle of the range too. hoodys i find the cheaper ones are just as well made and nicer designed, i dont mean super cheap just average range

the thing is, is that, i like branded clothing, but it can be SO expensive.
but if i had like 100$ i'd def spend it on quite a few clothes than just one expensive particlee (:

I mainly shop at stores like New Look, River Island, H&M, Forever21 and Republic because the prices are in my price range. There's absolutely no way I'd pay more than £10 for a t-shirt, yet alone £40 or whatever the prices are for t-shirts with a print or brand on them.
I'm looking on the republic site now and there's a denim shirt for £105 with 'G-star' written in small letters above the pocket, why would anyone buy that? Surely they must be buying them just so they can tell people they have a G-star shirt, you can buy them without the brand for £25+ at normal shops.
And even if I was well off I'd still shop the same as I do, I'd just buy more things than I usually do on a typical shopping trip.

I do both. Every so often like 4 times a year I'll buy a branded £40-65 bag/hoodie/converse and through the rest of the year I'll live off Primark. Every so often my auntie comes over she'll surprise me. Last year I got my Juicy Couture tracksuit which I dislike.

Depends, I'll buy branded items in the sale and if they are high quality - so worth the money I'm paying. I won't pay just for the name
I prefer good brand clothing that has no or little branding on it. Don't care if people think its cheap as long as its warm and comfortable for me.

Aslong as I feel comfortable and look good I don't mind. Everyone should wear what they like. :D
