View Full Version : A good PC for gaming?

I'm in need of a new PC because my current one can barely handle habbo, let alone decent games, so I've decided to invest in a new one, the only problem being, I have little to no computer knowledge and I've no idea what kind of 'specs' to be looking for, so does anyone wanna help me out or just point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance!

Budget? Seeing as you have no knowledge, you probobly don't want to build it yourself either..

Budget? What sort of games?

Also, habbo not working is far more likely due to a shoddy internet connection, so a new PC won't help that.

Generally any desktop computer nowadays will do for general gaming.

If you're serious look for this list of key words:

(# Being a number)

- i7 / i5
- Sandy Bridge
- nVidia GTX###
- ATi Radeon HD 68## / 69##
- SSD / Solid State Drive
- Water Cooling
- DDR3
- 'Hardcore Gaming'
- 3ghz
- 500 Gigabytes
- Windows 7

Basically any new computer at around £750 or more will probably satisfy this criteria

Avoid these:
- Laptops
- All In One desktops
- Touch screen
- Macs (You can argue all you like, steam blah blah, gaming is moving, blah blah. w/e, macs still suck for gaming.)

And that is the foolproof guide to buying a computer that can run Crysis at a decent FPS.

Edit:

Reminds me of those good ol' days when Habbo was laggy because they had terrible servers and the entire hotel population would be spamming 'laaaaaaag' for five minutes.

- 'Hardcore Gaming'

This should be avoided like the ******* plague. Nothing that advertises itself as "Hardcore Gaming" equipment is ever good, it's just horrible markup on a most likely mediocre product.

everyone knows that a sticker on the side of a computer saying 'Hardcore gaming' will make it run 1337% faster... mmk.

Seriously, yeah you're probably right. Not sure why I added that to be honest.

just curious why you say avoid laptops ?

just curious why you say avoid laptops ?

No matter how much you spend on a laptop you can always get a PC with better specs and probably cheaper. Laptops are smaller while as with a PC and a tower, you can fit larger equipment inside it. Of course laptops are getting more advanced all the time, but they will never supersede the desktop.

If your wanting a new computer its best to work out what for first. You could spend loads of a really good gaming computer, but if your only going to play a couple of games that aren't really that high end, it's probably not worth it.

I also recommend if you can, get someone to custom build your computer. If your a high end user, one issue with retail computers, is they often come with crap you don't need and sometimes try and lower stuff so you don't get the full potential. I have heard there are decent websites that do custom builds but I sadly don't know any but I'd recommend finding out - the good thing is you can get rid of what you want and have a computer for you really.

Desktops are designed for power.
Laptops are designed for portability.

It's pretty obvious.

Oh good this is when I wish I had some form of computer knowledge,
I was looking at spending about £500 ish, and I don't mind buying preowned, but yeah I think I'll avoid building one myself D:
Thanks for the replies guys, I almost forgot about this!

I don't think he needs to go get something with water cooling and an i7 because he's struggling playing habbo. A £300-£350 laptop or desktop would be sufficient.

I suppose that would depend on what other games he's playing although if they're not overly intense I don't see why he'd need an i7 :P

Where's the fun in that?
Also he really needs to be able to play full screen crysis at highest settings these days.

We'd really need to know what games you intend on playing and on what settings, your budget, and if you're planning on purchasing a desktop or laptop. As far as Habbo is concerned, I doubt there's a new computer on the market that would be unable to handle it. I'm sure if you give us that information someone will be able to find you a link to a reasonable computer for your needs.

If you are going to be thinking about playing games such as COD on high graphics or games like that, I would personally suggest building it your self.

Getting a £20,000 computer wouldn't solve the lag on habbo if you have a **** internet connection.

Either build your own, or buy an Alienware.

I've heard Alienware has went downhill. I mean it is owned by Dell, which although was once quite reputable seems to have also went downhill. The problem is manufacturers will always try and get the most money as possible and try and oversell their product e.g. using words claiming it is the fastest etc.

I'd recommend looking into some sites that actually do custom built ones for you. But if your not going to play top end games then just go for something for about £300-£400

Dell are fantastic.

This. 2 Dell computers since about 2004 and they're still living. My dad has an old dell laptop and it's still working. Along with that, the delivery timing is not bad and the prices aren't bad either (although both the computers were on offer :P).

Most the people I know who build their own machines and stuff find them very overpriced and stuff. But its all about opinions

Every laptop is overpriced. Doesn't matter what brand it is.

Which is why the best solution is always to build your own. But if you don't know how to do that, then unfortunately you have no choice but to spend a lot of money.

I recently bought the Alienware M11x and can safely say I do not regret spending £750 what so ever.

Exactly. Which is why most people just buy them. And unfortunately, buying a decent laptop from any company, is going to cost you a lot of money.

Apple are the worst for stealing money off people, Alienware are also bad, but every company do it.

No point in complaining about laptops being overpriced because that's just how the world is and it will never change.

Laptops aren't overpriced, they are sold at what is the market value is and is what the consumer is prepared to pay, if you want to build your own laptop you'll have to design it yourself and then go to a factory to do it.

What do you mean by computer? A desktop or a laptop. Desktops, you can buy all the components from shops and whatever and build it in your own home.

A laptop is not that easy and you can't really buy everything for it I don't believe. In terms of having a case and then getting the stuff to fit all in side and whatever.

Both desktops and laptops can both be built at home.

You try and build a laptop at home and see how successful you are. People who want to buy laptops will just buy one (that is built already) and people who want to buy desktops have a choice of buying a pre-built one or build one themselves. It is also much easier to get the parts and stuff for an actual desktop computer compared to a laptop.
