Minecraft was one of the standout games of 2010 (despite the fact that it hasn’t technically released yet), and one of the most common recurring questions on the official forums is whether the experience would work on consoles. Luckily Projectorgames, the veteran Indie outfit behind the sublime Steam Heroes, is set to answer this question. FortressCraft is set to deliver a heady blend of freeform creation with cutting edge-graphics, using nifty coding techniques to get around the Xbox 360’s lack of RAM compared to most PCs. Currently the project is set for an Xbox Live Indie release.

Despite only being in development for three weeks, FortressCraft is already looking incredible. Day/night cycles, water effects, 32-player online multiplayer and avatar support is already in the bag- with ProjectorGames now focusing on the peer 2 peer functionality. To add extra pressure to the already tight schedule, project leader ‘DJArcas’ has exclusively confirmed to us that the release is set for February 7th, which is the Microsoft deadline for Indie games submitted using the XNA 3.1 toolset. If they miss the midnight cutoff point, they’ll have to go back to the drawing board!

It won't be the same.

Unless you mean sorting out how to get the Nether on SMP without needing 2 servers then Notch doesn't have that much of a challenge on his hands as he's not the one making this copy :P

I meant in the sense if other companies can replicate Minecraft on the 360 then he has a challenge to do it first and with the original.

It doesn't look right :P Realistic sky and water effects do not go well with the blocks.

No, Minecraft can't do most of the tech shown here. This is an Xbox/PC game called FortressCraft, that should be initially available on Xbox Live Indie games, and after then on IndieCity.
The first release will be similar, tho not identical, to minecraft's Creative mode.

what so it's coming to pc aswell? Sounds more like an attempt to steal minecraft users imo

If only it was on PSN. Oh well. Minecraft ftw. It looks like a rip off with better graphics anyway.

It looks like a rip off with a different graphics style. I'd hardly call them 'better'.

I wanna know if they actually spoke to notch about it. Because I highly doubt he would let someone copy the whole of his game just so they can change the graphics and release it on xbox :S

Even if they were to submit it I doubt Microsoft would give it a second glance because of all the hassle it would cause.

Same here. They must be in talks in some shape or form. No way a rip of minecraft will be released for xbox without him giving consent.

The water is, and the blocks can do a higher resolution.

I think this is probably the best post to reply to.

Whilst FortressCraft Chapter 1 has been heavily inspired by Minecraft Creative (NOT survival), you'll find that I'm in violation of no laws. Not patent (There is nothing to patent), not trademark (My game is not called Minecraft), not copyright (I have taken no code or graphics or sound from Minecraft). The same also applies to plagiarism and 'theft'. My main goal is to make another game in the same genre as Minecraft, that is, the voxgame genre. If you have never heard of them, I would recommend you go look up 'Roblox' and then 'Infiniminer', both of which predate Minecraft (Roblox being released over 5 ago!)

As time goes on, FortressCraft will appear to be less of a 'direct rip' and more of it's own game. I only started it 4 weeks ago. Give me a chance, eh!

FlyingJesus

I don't know about Roblox as I've never seen it but I know for a fact that Minecraft was based HEAVILY on Infiniminer during initial creation, so yeah this is no more of a "rip" than suggesting FIFA and Pro Evo are rips of each other. I likely won't be playing it myself as I don't have an Xbox but best of luck to the designers who seem to have done a lot in very little time so far

Infiniminer's source was released and it faded away, this seems like a pure rip of an extremely fast growing game. It's just trying to hijack the success of minecraft. I hope this game dies a very painful and costly death :P

You could easily argue that about any pair of games of the same genre. 'Omg, Tekken is just a rip of the very fast growing Virtua Fighter! It's just trying to hijack the success!". "Virtua Fighter is just a rip of FX Fighter!" "Fx Fighter is just a rip of Mortal Kombat!' 'Mortal Kombat is just a rip of Street Fighter 2'

Computer games -hell, and movies *and* music, is, always has been, and always will be, about seeing something, an idea, a style, and going 'I like that... but it would be better if XXX'

I just decided to do something about 'XXX'!

Ask yourself, would you rather play Street Fighter 4, or IK+? :-)

---------- Post added 03-02-2011 at 03:46 PM ----------

Also, to paraphrase, let's just jump back 18 months in time:

"Minecraft is just a pure rip of an extremely fast growing game. It's just trying to hijack the success of Infiminer! I hope this game dies a very painful and costly death"

I hope my point is made there?

People seem to be getting really hostile about this for no reason. It's a game in the same genre, it's not an exact copy and infringes on no legalities - not to mention Notch himself has said that he doesn't care if people want to make similar games. Anyone who can't understand the difference in concepts between "inspired by" and "stolen from" ought to do some research before getting into this sort of argument

Was doom a copy of wolfenstein 3D? No. They're just the same genre. Granted it looks similar to minecraft but minecrafts charm comes from the whole retro look.

I have no problem with games being similar but when you produce a game which only difference is the graphics it becomes to similar, from the videos I've watched you've copied everything straight from minecraft and upped the graphics. You can argue all you like but at the end of the day allot of people will think this. Unless these is some drastic difference between the games, which from what I've seen inst apparent.

Infiminer released its source around its time, they basically said anyone can pick up and carry on/copy. Also if I remember correctly infiminer wasn't ment to be played anything like minecraft is. Your game seems to have the exact same play style.

Be more original because right now it looks like a complete copy.

from the videos I've watched

I think I can end your quote right there, tbh.

As I've said - so many times times now - Minecraft Creative *had* no gameplay. FortressCraft Chapter 1 (Call it FortressCraft creative, if you like) has no gameplay. It's a multiplayer building toy. Gameplay comes at a later date.

Did Doom appear when wolfenstein 3D wasn't even released? No.

I think most people are talking about the timing. Minecraft isn't even out yet and poof out comes another game into developement that looks exactly like minecraft except for the graphics

It sort of turns both games into competition before they're even released and makes it look like fortresscraft is attempting to steal the minecraft userbase

I think the main thing which makes it look like is a rip of, is that its basically the same in setting and stuff, same blocks pretty much. If it was made so that instead of being set in the past (thats what I think minecraft is) it was set in the future, it wouldnt be looked so badly at. But damn that is nice water.

The point of minecraft creative, was to create things hence the name  The point of your game is to build things (or as you like to call it a multilayer building toy), looks like we have a snap! Ignore my point if you want to but its vaild, people will see FortressCraft as a minecraft rip because that is exactly how it looks.

I simply get tired and annoyed by people who think that Minecraft invented this genre of game, and is the only example of build-em-up's. Wurm Online has been out since 2004; "Wurm Online is a Java based MMORPG in which the players shape and mold the world they play in, from the ground to the buildings that rest on top of it. The game is totally freeroam and open-ended. "

Does that sound at all familiar? :P

It looks exactly the same bar the enhanced graphics, where as Minecraft looks nothing like Wurm Online. I never said that Minecraft created the genre, only that FortressCraft looks like a minecraft rip

Oh I dunno, it made me laugh *grins* Actually anything organic is an issue; we can't go down the Minecraft blocky route, we can't hit state of the art (not feasibly), so I'm worried that all the animals will end up firmly in the uncanny valley :(

Do the mobs only appear when your looking at them to reduce lag? I guess when there in full 3d you wont beadle to have that many in-game at one place.

Projectorgames

Mobs are only rendered on-screen for efficiency. They're currently balanced against the xbox, but I can spin much faster on the mouse, hence why you can see them fading in. It's pretty much impossible to spot on the Xbox.

And I expect there will be less mobs; it's IMPOSSIBLE to tell the difference between 3k and 16k mobs by eye!
