What A levels you take, or if you leave, what job you can get. If you fail your subjects you can't do them at A level etc. Uni's do also look at them, to see if you're rounded or just completely arty/mathematical etc. and to check that your results are all consistent (eg; you got straight A's at GCSE and A level, not all A's at GCSE then C's & D's at A level...they'd wonder why..).

You don't have to do Physics, chemistry & biology separately. you can do single or double science which is just 1 or 2 SCIENCE GCSEs rather than 3 separate ones - which is triple.

If you want to go to a half decent college / 6th form to study academic subjects, then of course GCSE's matter... saying they don't is rather silly

English, Maths and Science is compulsory across the country :)

I took History, ICT Additional and Media Studies when choosing the extra GCSE subjects. Did Triple Science, Music, Literature and Statistics in addition to English, Maths and RE too :P

You'd be surprised at the ages of some people here ;D
When I chose mine afew years back I was only allowed to take 3, and then choose double or triple science, because our school forced us into two languages (not that I minded (is minded even a word?))

Yeah I choose Drama, Economics and ICT
Turns out they were my three worse GCSE grades ;3

I chose an ICT Diploma and History, that's all I could really do after they paired BTEC Media with PE.
