Yes, it only ran 6 episodes. The second season will be double the length.

Its a brilliant show, what I found different about it was it felt like I was watching a movie rather than actual episodes, perhaps it was because I watched them one after another. I was very disappointed with how the first series ended, it would of been awesome if it had of been more of a "what happens next" fair enough they move on again but that wasn't enough to excite me to watch the next series. Although I probably will.

Varies based on the series and broadcaster/production team. Monk on USA had 16 per season whereas NCIS on CBS and 24 on FOX had 24 per season. Don't know another AMC series to compare it to.
