was watching that show with michelle mcmammoth and they were making flowers & the guy said "dont give white and red flowers at the same time, it signals bad luck"
so i was wondering what kinda superstitions do you believe? or used to believe when you were younger?

i still don't walk under ladders or scaffolding cause my mum told me it was bad luck. i used to always avoid the cracks on the ground when i was walking... & i still don't open umbrellas inside.
when i was younger i remember that rhyme "once is a wish, two is a kiss" for when you sneeze or something and if you didn't say bless you then the spirits would get you :( idk. also, if a black cat looked at you and walked away it was unlucky (i hated my grans cat it was EVIL)
+ killing a spider meant it would rain....

Apparently the red and white is supposed to symbolize red blood on white hospital sheets - many people simply can't bring themselves to buy red and white flowers (even though I think they look the best together).

ANYWAY.
I'm quite odd when it comes to superstitions. I don't believe any of it, but I don't really want to tempt fate and I still avoid doing certain things :P I'd never open an umbrella inside, it's just one of those things that's... forbidden! My friend always avoids walking over a set of three grates on the pavement as apparently it brings bad luck.. so I've started avoiding them now :'( You should have seen me the week before my AS Psychology exam, I was avoiding all the cracks, all the grates, all the ladders. Damn I'm such a pushover :'(

A couple of weeks ago I got some new shoes and put them on the table and both my Mum and Gran shouted GET THEM OFF at me.. cos' apparently that's bad luck too. They're the two people who've drilled it into me about ladders and umbrellas too! :(

So yeah. I don't believe them but I still avoid stuff. ffs.

Inseriousity.

I don't really believe in any of them except I do salute a lone magpie cos if you don't that's meant to be bad luck if you don't. :D

1 for sorrow
2 for joy etc etc

I do a few things.

Before a performance have a bit chewing gum...dunno why, for good luck I guess.
And always tap my poles (skiing) or my plectrum against my guitar before starting...

oh and I do the magpie thing, and I used to not go under ladders or do the umbrellas thing but I got over that.

When I walk home theres always this black cat that just sits there looking out of one of the houses windows like across the road from me, the first time I saw it I was like WOAHHHHHHHH but I've had no bad luck from it, so 'tis all good :)
&I only don't walk under ladders because I'm scared if they fall on me 'cus once I watched Tracy Beaker and Duke was on this ladder thingy and it nearly fell so I have bad images </3;(

i do this! other than my mum who told me about it never actually met anyone who'd heard about this superstition before, although i heard you had to spit over your shoulder not salute them :P. i didn't really fancy actually spitting though so whenever i see a lone magpie i just turn my head to the side + i always have since i was younger.

i avoid walking under ladders or scaffolding too and i try not to open umbrellas inside. when i was a lot younger i remember watching a cartoon where the character kept stepping on all the cracks and it actually broke his mums back + even though it was only a cartoon it worried me and after that i avoided stepping on cracks for ages :(. it didn't really work out that well though because in some places it was virtually impossible and ended up as more of a game than a superstition.

it's meant to be good luck to say white rabbits as soon as you wake up on the first of every month so i've always tried to do that, although i think i've only ever remembered to say it once and i didn't have a particularly lucky month so meh :P

I know a lot of people who do the "touch wood" thing. I've seen people more often pretend to be superstitious to try and be funny, than actualy believe in them, if you get what i mean.

I'm not particularly superstitious myself

I don't necessarily believe any of the stereotypical superstitions but I don't go against them either lol. Being a baseball player, I'm very superstitious while playing that, pretty much all baseball players are in some way, I do the same routine (which is pretty long) every single time I go up to bat, and in between pitches, and when I go out into the field..

I don't really believe in any. Except good and bad luck balance out.

yeah - don't change your mind over a 'big event' such as... going out - do what you first think or else something will go wrong

No I am not superstitious. All that stuff about walking under a ladder is rubbish imo.

Nothing really, apart from not whistling in the house because if you do, you won't have money & not to swear at night, thats it really.
