Careers advisers assume everyone in special needs is a total...dunno if I'm allowed to say it but anyway.

Had my annual meeting with my key worker and a career adviser was there, she took one look at my exam results and was like
"oh, you're not what I'm used to." Then she said "so what do you want to take for A levels - assuming you want to go to 6th form" I said
"Maths, Further Maths, French & Economics or Physics". She looked at me in a weird way, then said "and university" "Cambridge to study Mathematica or economics".

She looked at my mum and then back at my results and had this weird look on her face. I think it's because she rarely hears that lol. It's just so annoying. Just because I have special needs, doesn't make me stupid lol.

Seriously? That's absolutely shocking ;l

To be honest, career advisors aren't of any use in my opinion. Our career advisor said to everyone in my year that they cannot achieve what they want to do and to think of a different career path. Someone shouldn't tell you what you can't and cannot do, I want to do media studies and hopefully progress to have a career in the media sector and she said to me to take up Administration... :s

apart from the "you're not what im used to", its probably just because she doesnt hear ppl saying they want to go to the top unis often. When i said i was gonna apply for oxford everyone (including my close friends) were like SHOCK HORROR.

Also how would she know you're disabled, i swear u walk about

It was an annual review for my special needs, she only was invited because I'm special needs lol. She was probably told of my disability but not aware of the connotations.

It's quite bad though, they just ASSUME everyone with a disability is stupid. And it's not just staff, some kid in year 7/8 who is also in a wheelchair ASSUMED I was stupid. He said "I've got a lot of homework that's really hard" and I said "It's not as bad as year 10" and he said "Yeah, I'm in top set" which infuriated me because I'm in top set of 9/10 sets and he's in top set of 4 lol.

But meh, it's just bad how people assume because you're special needs, you're not clever ;l

Wow that's bad. Everyone should follow their dreams in my opinion.

A good friend of mine wants to be an actor, and he's on his way to achieving it despite being told how hard it is to make it.

Another one was told he'd never make it in Rugby. A year later he was scouted by Saracens lol.

I think career advisers are pointless, I mean, the last one I had (not this one) was alright, she gave me a few ideas to go away with but she was still a bit edgy when I said I want to go to Cambridge etc. I don't see anything wrong with it. If people want to aim high, then let them.

Not everyone assumes that you're stupid if you have a disability or special needs, like take dyslexia, my best friend has it and she is really clever. Maybe it is just that one person, because all the support staff at college don't think that..

I hate people who put you down like this, there's a special needs director at our school, and she always treats the kids she's looking after as babies, like they can't look after themselves. It really annoys me. TBH, when you're at Cambridge or wherever you end up, you can look back and stick your proverbial tongue out at her, after all it's your life!

Maybe it's just round my area lol. I tell everyone I'm special needs and they're like "oh, so how's GCSEs" "eh, pretty good, As, A*s" ":O" lol.

Precisely lol. Although to be fair my actual special needs workers are OK, but some teachers and people who visit, and people in school, are really ignorant.

You should report it to someone so they get sorted out and have a talking to or something because it's not fair assuming things and treating you like an idiot or whatever.

I've also had this, I think it's just a general question! Doesn't mean they think you're stupid and going to do rubbish.

I think they do tend to look down on people with special needs more than other kids though, ever since my teachers found out about my adhd it's like... YOU OKAY? I really don't understand why they have to treat anyone differently, a physical disability isn't gonna effect anything at the end of the day..

p.s. 500 post count *wooo*

Yeah I honestly think you're looking too much into it.
Just because someone says "I'm in top set" doesn't mean they're saying you're stupid, they're saying that they're clever and trying to boost their ego!

Just because a careers advisor says "that's not what I'm used to" might just mean that she hears a lot of "Im not good at anything, I'm useless, I don't know what I'm gonna do"

And yeah everyone goes :O WELL DONE when you say you have As or A*s because they secretly wish they had them too but don't want to sound bitter :P

I don't think anyone should be judged regardless of whether they have special needs or not, a girl in my English class who has dyslexia got a B in her GCSE and she was really happy because she wasn't predicted to pass. And that's reminded me about a book I'm reading, (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time) it's about a boy with aspergers and he's really good with mathematics and numbers, so it shows that just because you might have special needs doesn't mean you're unintelligent, infact you might even be really clever, like the boy in the book.
The career's advisor at my school is actually quite helpful, in my last meeting she told me straight out that staying on for sixth form at my current school would be a bad idea. She even admitted my school was going downhill.
The only thing I didn't like was her telling me that 'becoming a director' would be a difficult career to get into and giving me lots of information on it. I've actually done my research on what it takes and what career isn't 'hard to get into' anyway?

I can't see the part in this story where they assumed you were a dunce because of special needs

did she SAY anything about your disability? did she SAY you weren't capable of what you wanted to? she might just not be used to it because some special needs people have no confidence to go further.

and honestly i just think you're here to brag especially from your other post about some guy being in 4 top sets and you being the top set for 9, you're belittling him as much as others apparently belittle you. look, you have no-one to impress here. if it bothers you so much then go out there and prove those people wrong. i was always told i would go nowhere in life (lovely ex before there) and well DONT MEAN TO BRAG but i am 3rd in our subject at college for marks and 2nd in my class...

Maybe it's because you don't look like a downy but yh you brag wayyyyyyyyyyy 2 much. no1 cares if your estimated GCSE grades are mostly A* .........you just brag about everything and then if something happens/ some1 says something you just automatically think it's because of your disability. Before you say I am, i'm not jealous.
