Hey,
I have this "friend" who hosts illegal download links on his rapidshare account. He has stole aprox $720,300 from a software company. What is the chances of him getting sued or him getting charged for the offence if caught?
Would it not be down to the hosting company to remove the download link?

lol, he won't get caught.
The main thing nowadays is music sharing. People are only getting sued for uploading copyrighted data, not downloading it. With torrents, you automatically upload while downloading. With rapidshare, you're just downloading from a server with no upload involved.
Since your friend is an uploader, there is considerably more risk in what he is doing. He still won't get caught though.
He hasn't stolen any money, since he would not have bought the software anyway. You shouldn't look at it like that.
If I download a game which is worth £30, i have not lost the company any money since I would not have paid for the game anyway, even if I could not pirate it.
If you're talking about adobe, then they really don't care. I recently had a lecture at uni with a guest speaker from adobe, and he asked if any of us had pirated their software at some point. Pretty much everyone put their hand up. He said they didn't care because they know people can't afford it and that their main target market is the business sector.

I know a guy who got in huge trouble for illegal music filesharing. Himself and his parents had to pay quite a sizeable fine, yet since he was young and a first offender it was left at that. He stole approx 900 euro if i remember right.
If your friend gets caught, with that amount of stolen stuff, he will probably get some time in jail. Depends on his age, previous offences amongst other things though. If he can't pay it back it will be even worse.

That's just idiotic, why go around flaunting it? IMO he is.

Others may disagree with me, but I'd never have put them up in the first place (the videos I mean, not the links) :P
