I have just started going to the gym today.
im a rather big build too. i weight about 10 stone its awful. and im 15 years old. I need to do something about it. im really weak too. i hope it will do me some good.
How long does it take for most of your muscles to develop. when you have been weighlifting. going on a rowing machine. going on the tredmill. all this for about 10-15 minutes twice a week. and its all in the space of 1 hour for £2.50 ;) its great.
does anything happen to you if you stopped going to the gym so often and didnt work out enough.

10 stone isnt hevey for a 15 year old realy "/ it could even be quite light taking in to account age has little to do with weight its far more to do with how tall someone is "/

But, I'm still about 125 LB at age 13.. most of it being in my thighs.
:( I try to lose a lot of weight but I don't lose that much.. I'm not very big or anything... but it wouldn't hurt losing about 15 pounds! :)

the 1st eprson is right 10 stone isn't heavy,
also, by doing weights and putting on MUSCLE u will lose FAT however u will put ON weight! this is where scales can be deceptive because when you may have a slimmer weighstline but ur weight will have increased maybe. hope you understand this.
and you will need to stay in the gym longer than 15 mins to get more effecct. a 10 min gentle cycle is usually best for a warm up. then you can do a round of wieghts ( watch out which ones you use, see the gym instructer for more info on which machines to use to work the right muscle groups)
generally the machines like clycling, treadmill, cross trainer, rowing machine are excellent for keeping a slim figure. dont use SCALES they are deceptive!!! thats all i have 2 say.
i have lost a bit of flab(not tht i had much anyway) and put tht in2 muscle now i'm 5 kg heavier. i am an athlete tho so thts kinda why i know all this. they drill it in2 you. HEALTHY FOOD also helps :D

Well I'm 17, 5'9 or more <.< and Idunno how much I weight in stone..I'm not fat thought. I used to went to gym like every day in the week 'cause I had to train alot for basketball and keep in shape, now I'm already in shape and I go around 4-5 times for 1hour. First it's hard to get in the ''work out system'' but when you get used to it..it's great. It makes me feel so much better.

icaI agree with russel, i have done weight lifting for around 2 years now and it does quite a long time until you get some results and when you do you wont notice it. I had it and i thought it was a waste of time as i couldent see any changes. But i have been at boxing for around 9 months now and it is one of the best sports to get you fit especially if your doing it all the time as for me 4 times a week, hope this helps.
I go the gym atleast twice a week, although this week i went 4 times because i was in the mood i guess.
I see alot of you are complaining it costs abit too much for you guys. Well here in liverpool our council have set up a future lifestyles scheme where you apply for a card that grants you free access to gym and swimming facilities across the city. I don't know if this happens in your area but i'd check into it as this scheme is for 13-17 year olds where i live.
Just combine regular exercise with a balanced diet and the results should appear without going the gym or exercising 20 times a week.

although it helps,
you dont have to go to the gym.
you can exercise at home,
about an hour a day is fine.
aslong as you're staying fit.
i don't go to the gym,
& i dont need to, because i can stay fit at home.
without having to pay that extra money.

don't go to the gym, at your age look to shift your own weight - ie, push-ups, chin-ups, sit-ups. Use your own weight as your instrument then you're always within your limits and not going to damage yourself.
I'm 14, 5 foot 4 and 7 1/2 stone. My BMI said I was underweight :)

A word of warning to you, do NOT start heavy weight lifting at your age its really unheathly for you despite what you may think. Some light lifting and running etc 2-3 times a week for about half an hour a time should be enough for you at that age just to help tone you up.
Ive been using the gym since I was 16 and started heavy weight lifting BIG mistake, even at 16 your body still isnt fully developed and lifting heavy weights can cause serious health problems as I found out when I tore my calf muscle which put me out of action for about 4 months.
I started again when I was nearly 18 I found it easy to get into the routine again but i still took it easy going 3 times a week for 1 hour at a time, which was enough for me (at the time I was 6ft 1in, 154 lbs[11 stone])
I now go Monday-Friday for 2 hours which is all that is needed for anyone. ALWAYS take 2 days off obviously I take Saturday and Sunday but you can take which ever as long as it is 1 after the other.
Im now standing at 6ft 4in and weigh 175 lbs (around 12 and half stone)
EDIT: LOL at original post date :S

If you want to lose weight don't go to the gym! Going to the gym makes your muscles larger thus making you heavier. I learnt that muscle is actually heavier than fat. However if you want to get healthier, go ahead. I'm 10 stone and 5"9 btw.
