Windows 7 upgrade...

Hey everyone. I am wanting to buy Windows 7 Professional 64bit edition from software4students. They only do upgrade editions from xp and vista and Im currently on windows 7 home premium 32 bit. I was wondering could I just install xp from an old disk quickly onto the harddrive and then use the upgrade disc? Thanks.

You should just be able to do a fresh install from the upgrade disc, just don't activate the product key during the installation.

It's well worth doing it that way. It's quite a hassle upgrading Windows unfortunately and not particularly reliable.

Upgrade means buggar all, you never need to buy a full edition :P Just run it and go through all the stages. I did it with my Windows 7 Pro edition. I don't think it complains either :S You are technically upgrading your machine from Home Premium to Professional. It's only tricky when installing on a fresh, OS-less computer where you install it twice - Once for the OS, and twice because it discovers it's not an upgrade but with the second run it thinks you're upgrading.

I've got upgrade - however, I found if you enter the key DURING installation it has a higher success ratio. When i entered it after I'd got into windows, installed everything etc, I was greeted with "This key is for upgrade only" and it took 30 minutes of phone calls to get it all activated. When I was entering during installation, it was going through fine :S

You could of just reinstalled it again - the upgrade would of seen the installed version of Windows 7 and assumed that you were upgrading. Don't ask why it does that, no-one knows :/ It's one of those problems that make you love Microsoft and Windows even more, because they do not appear to care about it :P
