View Full Version : Swearing on the Radio?

When playing FF, we had a slight debate on swearing on the radio.
I think its fine since habbo is meant to be for 13+ and most of us have heard swearing ect. But others think its bad since younger children could be listening, and real life radio's do not swear. (Although i think there is a slight difference between BBC1 heard by young children in the car ect and habbox , a radio really meant to be for 13+ )
What do you think? ;)

Swearing on the radio doesn't sound very professional and is inappropriate!

I think normal FM/AM radios can use swear words after a certain time and for certain programmes.
It's ok to swear every now and again on the radio i think, just don't be letting off F bombs every single minute.

If a fair sized chunk of your audience is without a doubt going to be made up of younger people, it's definitely better to be cautious and just keep it clean. If you're something more like a podcaster, or broadcast to a mature audience, you can justify a bit of on-air swearing.

I don't see the point in needing to swear on a radio anyway, I swear this topic has been brought up before and a system allowing swearing will probably not happen!

With all respect the argument fails, why would a presenter need to swear? it's just unprofessional and childish. The odd swear in a song should be fine after 9pm because I know how frustrating it can be to find / clean a hip hop song for example. Although I know that wouldn't be implemented because habbox is an international fansite.
I don't really think it's a major issue
Habbo is meant to be for 13+
Nowadays, 13 year olds would've heard these swear words before so it's not really that bad. If you're younger then yeah it's your own fault. I don't think it's always needed but with DJ's they probably accidently swear or just have a song they thought was clean but it turns out to have a bad word in it. As long as they don't swear all the time I don't think theres much of a problem? And aslong as they appoligise? :S
This topic was brought up a few weeks ago and of course the answer was no. Is there really a need for a person to get by in life with swearing, you don't want to be promoting swearing as great things to do either. Mild words such as arse and crap are all fine and dandy but we do not need to cross a line.

Yeah, i agree with all views, a watershed idea would be cool (plus im not like asking for anything to be changed, i just wanted to see people's views)

I personally am for swearing on air (in songs - in moderation only). Obviously not by the presenter, that's just silly, but often songs sound better with the full lyrics rather than cleaned and (for example) Eminem's songs have a lot of power behind them that is often taken away with the swearing.
I think there should be a limit (ie; 2 swear songs per show) but I have always been for swearing in songs on air.

It isn't really about whether people have heard the words really.
Why do you need to feel the need to swear on the radio? The last thing I would want to hear is 'oh that is ******* hilarious, **** me that was funny, oh **** I forgot my password.'
It would just ruin it.

Can we just make it clear...I think we mean swearing in songs, not the DJ swearing - that's a big nono.

Perhaps if before a song with swearing if a DJ stated.
"This song contains swearing which may be offensive to some users."

There is that.
Or I remember a long time ago a site that had a button on the DJ panel which DJs could press to warn the listeners they were going to play swear songs, and it just had a little notice on the site (easily viewable) that said *This show may contain songs with bad language* or something. That could be an idea?

I think it depends on the amount of swearing in it. Like Katy Perry's Hot n Cold saying ***** in it I think is fine as I heard it today, but one yesterday saying mother ******* rapist or something was totally out of order, luckily the dj saw that it was very powerful with swearing and therefore changed the song.
I think djs are ok to use words like arse, crap, bloody etc.

There are only 4 banned words.

Any others you can play (so like b****, ass etc.) but I think either it is in moderation (so 2 songs with swearing) or each song has to be judged in context.

Swearing will not be allowed because it sounds bad. I think having warnings etc are pointless because it will still sound bad and gives a bad image. Also we don't just not allow 4 words, they are examples because there was confusion over different words as in different countries they are seen in a different way like not as swearing.

Ok, so you're a parent of a 13 year old who uses Habbo, you walk upstairs and you hear them listening to something on their computer and you hear several swearwords etc coming from the DJ - would you be happy? No, and this is why DJs swearing won't be allowed.
I don't personally have issues with songs that swear, but that's my viewpoint and if Jess & Martin don't agree with that then it's their place to make that decision.

I think people have grasped the wrong end of this.
I personally don't want DJs swearing on air, and I doubt that was even the point of the thread. How I saw the thread was swearing in songs. But Jess just said it sounds bad ^.

The parent issue is strong for the DJ side, but I believe it to be totally unrealistic if parents dont expect to hear occasional swearing in songs, when used multiple times it could become OTT, and what if a parent didn't hear swearing in a song but heard extremely dark lyrics? Is there a lyrical theme ban on certain topics?

Do we really need swearing on the radio? no. I agree with what Oli said about if you're a parent of a 13 year old kid and they come up and hear swearing in songs and the djs swearing would you really want them to tune into that? also swearing on the radio would just give habboxlive and habbox as a whole a bad name and it would create the wrong messages. If we did allow swearing on the radio then i think some if not all djs would take advantage of it i mean theres probably loads of DJs who have songs they really want to play but can't because they cannot find clean versions of the songs, myself included.

Dear lord, a dj swearing is a big nono, I mean as in songs. I think I needed to make that clearer!
But my parents do occasionally swear and im sure others do, nobody comes from a perfect family and we don't live in a perfect world, 1 swear word in a song won't kill us... hopefully.

Fair enough that some people have parents that swear but i do still think that swearing on the radio is just inappropriate and not really needed but i do see where you're coming from. :)

Why on earth would you ever need to swear on a Habbo Radio or any radio in the first place :S Swearing in songs is a bit of a difficult topic, and hasn't been a total problem in the past as far as I am aware.
