Hey,
I made this short demo for future reference, what are your thoughts?
Click here (http://soundcloud.com/dickbarry/richard-barry-demo).
For a demo that seems great. Could raise Machoo's voice a bit as it's a bit soft.
On a side note, you also just put the whole HxL DJ team out of business.

Probably the best way though. It means it sounds professional, and possibly professional radio quality

I think he meant nothing new as in my work is always good, I could be wrong :P

Sorry to be rude but its bloody awful, no one will employ you with that. Now this is were i help you, Firstly to much music litrally as soon as you finish the ramp over the music it should be cut off. The voice is also very very muffled the key with a demo is to show you as your best useing a Argos £12 special mic will not do you any favours get in a studio or get some gear together with some dynamic processing. The levels are all over the place as well PPM 6 = Speech PPM 4/5= Music PPM 5= Jingles.
Next your links are far far to long, for comercial radio you need power links, check out capital they are the best at this very well structures ID the Station, ID you, Power link.
EG Capital FM, The Bassman here with you, that was Adeles brand new track Rolling in the deep, checkout the capital website at capitalfm.com to get tickets to the jingle bell ball were she will be performing that. JINGLE Ok comeing up music from ... ... and .. JINGLE SONG.
Very very fast power links.
Lastly is your demo is to long no PD has got that time on there hands mostly a demo lasts 30 seconds before your chucked in the bin so make that you best if you impress them they will cary on but even then 3 - 4 mins max is the most you will get. BBC is slightly longer at around 7 mins but they want in depth interviews as well.
Sorry to be rude but back to the drawing board.

Sorry but what the actual Hell? Richie owns his own website first of all, I'd really like to see your work right now. There's such thing as criticism, but I think here it is just taking the complete piss. He isn't looking to be employed... next time to give out criticism, you realy need to word it nicer.

"This clip is for future reference, friends and for employers" Yes he probably does but if he wants to make the step into FM as i know he did no PD would ever hire on that. My work is my work and for reference i am a BA in radio and not presenting currently. I know for a fact the Program Director at the station im with would bin this straight away. Im not being harsh here im being honest i had the same but mine was on alot worse scale and you know what it did me the world of good.
When your a PD then i will listen to you until then i will dish out the criticism that helps most demos find there way to the bin.
PS: If you send in awful demos via cd all it does is gives us a free coffee mat.

I think his level of honesty and CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is what this forum needs in a lot of the creative sections. He said it was bad yes, but he explained how to fix it. If anything, richie should be on his knees thanking him.

Thankyou! You see without blowing my own trumpet i have saved Ritchie the time and effort he would have taken to send a job application off just for the PD to listen to that and his application would be in the bin and his CD used for the usual usage of a free coffee mat.
All of my points i made i backed up with why and what to do to change them, as said on average 30 seconds is all you get before its either binned or you have grabbed the attention of a PD to listen to all of your demo.

@Shaz
Aww you're so cute but honestly it's fine, thanks shaz.
@Jamie
I was thinking compression but in all honesty I'm not sure how it works. Is it a piece of hard which just compresses everything before it actually goes on air?
@Naughtynemo
Getting on my knees and begging is a bit OTT.. :S I appreciate constructive criticism but it isn't like I'm gagging for it.
@roastchips
I appreciate your constructive criticism and respect your opinion. I agree it isn't anywhere near top notch and the levels are a messed up but jesus christ without sounding big headed saying "it's bloody awful" is a little over the top. I'd hate to hear what you'd say about other presenters on this forum (I don't mean any disrespect to any of you) and for your information it isn't a £12 argos microphone it's a t-bone sc-440.

It doesn't matter what i would say to any other presenter on this forum, fact of the matter is how ever brilliant you think you are that demo will do you no favours. As i say 30 seconds is what you get and your 30 seconds would get you your application shredded and the guys and girls at the station a free coffee mat with your CD.
It is not a little over the top the first tiny bit of a demo is cutting the music and this has not been done to a sufficient level, PD's are busy people they dont have time nor do they want to listen to 30 seconds of a chart hit. As well as this i assume your aiming for commercial radio if so your links are far far far to long. Commercial at the moment love the words "More Music" so links are only 1 min long at best usually. If its BBC radio you want your demo is totally out BBC want interviews and topical content.
As for the microphone judging by i have never heard of "T-bone" i will take that as a cheap microphone, while this is great for a little mess about on a internet radio if your doing a demo you want studio quality showing the PD the very very best. Hissy, muffled mics just add to the awfulness of a demo. Levels are also very important, while a BBC Local may get a Tech-Op to drive your desk a local commercial will not and will want you to drive it yourself. With levels like that it will put them off big time again its.
PPM 6 = Speech
PPM 4/5 = Music
PPM 5 = Jingles
O and PS when Jamie says compression he means overall Dynamics, Compression is a very very big part. before anything goes to air at a bare minimum it should be compressed and limited ideally it should also have a AGC and EQ as well.

Once again I appreciate your criticism but I am not applying for BBC 1 radio or any FM radio, I created the clip for future reference for internet radio applications and so on, so it's not really a massive deal, I'm not a big fan of my microphone any more but saying my microphone is a cheap Argos microphone is rather insulting and is an understatement.

I am by no means the best at Radio, i do though have real world industry experience in radio and weather you think im being big headed or not im stating the facts. I spent hours sending away applications that were not very good until someone basically tore me apart and explained what i need to do. Since then it basically changed my success. I backed up all my points and weather you think im a **** or not the radio industry is hard to break into once your in its not to to bad but its getting in that will be the problem.
Hey be my guest if you think im harsh go to digital spy or media uk if you think im bad some of them will kill you and half of them have never touched the industry in their life.

I don't mean to be funny but don't you need really good English skills to be "make it" in media (Which is why I'd never make it because my English is terrible).No offence but a man / woman who uses weather instead of whether makes me think twice if you're just trolling or what. My apologises if your spell check broke :( .
Again, I'm happy with people not liking my demo, it shows the reality of things. Although there is a difference between trying to make my demo sound better and trying to shoot me down.

Believe what you want to i know i am a paid B.A working in the industry so couldn't care less what you think. In terms of english not really i hold a basic GCSE in english of a BB grade and that was fine, like most things as far as i know a C in english and maths is all you need. I send no important messages as these are all done by in house administrators or the station management as a BA my jobs is what it says on the tin assisting broadcasts be that helping man phones, looking up things, or out on a OB ect.
