I think it would be good to prepare something in advance just in case. :)

Well if your family is paying obviously thanks to them and for what they have done for you and maybe some funny stories about you friends? Whatever it is you need to be comfortable and natural for it. :)

hi everyone
dude don't listen to them who think speeches don't happen
they do... ive been at a good few 18s where the parents brought out cake and people do 18 kisses and **** and then the person is forced to make a speech
everyone will be drunk anyways so dont worry bout it

Hmmm I guess it depends what kind of party it is really. I think some do have speeches and it would be quite nice I guess. (Not sure what you could say though really. :P)
I wouldn't have a clue though really, since I spent my 18th by myself haha.
Make sure you have a good time though, and just go with the flow I guess and see what happens. :D
Yeah a few of the 18ths I went to had speeches.
Just a quick 30 sec- 1 minute thing thanking everyone for coming and the people organising it really.

Well, what I'd suggest is instead of a massive speech just say thanks to everyone for coming and tell them to enjoy the rest of the evening, keep it simple and sweet if you don't feel extremely confident with making a speech. :)

I've seen it happen before, it isn't massively common but does happen!
why the hell would you make a speech at your 18th birthday, you're not winning a ******* award lol... just get wasted, its what i did
Something along these lines should be fine:
"I want to thank God. I want to thank the Lord God because It is really not up to me, it is up to him and I want to thank the devil too because you know that is why God is there. He is minding the fence to make sure that guy never comes back. You know if it weren't for the devil God had probably gone insane blowing he's brains out from boredom. Everybody likes to feel useful. Make a da world go around."

Maybe he doesn't want to get 'wasted' - each to his own. Good luck with the night and the speech. Let us know how it goes. :)

i havn't prepared a speech, but knowing how my parents try to set me up will most likley bring out a scooby doo cake haha... that would be epic XD but i wouldn't worry about it. i've been to 18th's with speeches and without. Yeah make one just to be on the safe side oh and make a list of people to thank ;)
er no? i went to my fair share of 18ths and no-one gave a speech.

Depends which party you actually go to. On my 18th, I had a small get together with my family (Bday was during the week) and then on the weekend I went out with friends.
So the speech might be more for a meal and not the party.

Yeah I kinda know what I'm saying now. It's only a short message to thank family and friends and I'll only say it if I get encouraged to :)

"cheers for not letting me die these past 18 years"
but ive never been to an 18th where someone made a speech, even in brighton that would seem very gay.
