Hey all,

I'm doing a project at college on Domestic Abuse and as part of my primary research I need some people to fill out some questionnaires for me. I'm hoping for at least 20 people and I will +rep each person that helps me out. As this can be seen as a bit of a personal questionnaire, if you would rather not have your answers displayed in public then you can always PM your answers instead. If you could help me out here that would be great :)

On the questions where I have given you multiple options it might be easier to just bold the option that applies to you.

good - good rhetorical question at the end, makes you think

8. What do you think of this advert compared to the first advert you watched? Please explain your answers.

the second is better. as shallow as it sounds, it has a celebrity endorsing it, which means it's more likely to get the message out there - proof is the fact that it was seemingly posted by a kiera knightley fan rather than the government. there was also a bit more tension to it with the cracked mirror and blood on the floor.

9. What do you think makes a good helpline advert appeal to its target audience (abuse victims)?

I think the idea that you're not alone is possibly the best way to help abuse victims get the help they need.

6. What do you think is good and bad about the advert it terms of the message it is trying to get across?
Just watched it for the first time and it is absolutely disgusting! What he says at the end is so cringeworthy. I do wonder if that actually happens in real life though.. perhaps I'm just not clued up about the topic of domestic violence. I daresay it also appeals to teens more than any other age-group because it's teens that are featured in it.

7. Are you familiar with the following advert?

8. What do you think of this advert compared to the first advert you watched? Please explain your answers.
I liked the symbols in this one. Broken mirror, blood... all tied in with the theme of it being a movie set (as it's Keira Knightly). The tag line about "cutting" is also very clever! I think the reason I found the first video so cringeworthy is because they were teenagers and you're more prone to being affected by messages aimed at your age-group. The Keira Knightly one however, featured a fully grown, working woman being beat by a man. I just get the feeling that if she had a problem with domestic violence then she should have the courage to speak out and tell someone about it (after all, she's a movie star IN THE ADVERT TOO). The first one is a teenager, and her parents are out, and he's a pretty scary looking guy! :P

9. What do you think makes a good helpline advert appeal to its target audience (abuse victims)?
Recognising the fact that other people do actually suffer from it and that it shouldn't be an embarassment to speak out about it. I think there's a lot of people who feel tied to a relationship due to attempting to "live the dream" and staying together for financial reasons or family pressure. It's even worse when children are involved, so you could say an advert involving children would get the message across - perhaps highlighting the fact that children who see or hear domestic violence will probably grow up fearful or fearless too.

Interesting questionnaire.

I feel it shows a good message and makes people think about what they are doing if their in a relationship. I think it also targets men and makes them seem like animals who want to have sex with any woman they want in a relationship, woman can also do this to men.

8. What do you think of this advert compared to the first advert you watched? Please explain your answers.

The advert is more of an eye-opener, the first advert didn't really show what it was like but this advert had more realism and showed the message of that the woman wanted it to stop but it only carried on.

9. What do you think makes a good helpline advert appeal to its target audience (abuse victims)?

Showing realism and showing that it isn't right for it to happen to ANYONE.

8. What do you think of this advert compared to the first advert you watched? Please explain your answers.

I think this one shows the bigger picture and hides nothing, it just shows how once it starts it never stops. I think the fact that they managed to get widely known celebrity's doing this is also a huge bonus and really does help promote it.

9. What do you think makes a good helpline advert appeal to its target audience (abuse victims)?

A good advert would show that you shouldn't be afraid to report issues like these and show that hundreds of others go through the same thing every year.

P.s. Cant find the spare quote tag so I cant get rid of it. :P

It's more of an adult kind of advert and instead of filling the advert with white lies, this one is more to the point and shows that it can also happen to people of any age/gender and religion. Also the fact the the advert has celebs in it will help.

9. What do you think makes a good helpline advert appeal to its target audience (abuse victims)?
One that encourages you to come forward, one that can offer you confidentiality and one that tells you straight that the problems won't go away unless you talk to someone about them.

the fact it sounds pretty common and is using peer pressure as the main theme, someone being forced into something they don't want to do, aswell as the element of blackmail is present.

Personally i think the first one is more effective, i think its because the storyline is pretty simple to pick up, where as on the second one i genuinly didnt get the story line until she stated 'that wasnt in the script'

9. What do you think makes a good helpline advert appeal to its target audience (abuse victims)?
the right aged group for starters, prime example is i found the first one more explanitary because im a teenager and found it easy to follow, where as i wasnt able to follow the adult version quiet so easily.

6. What do you think is good and bad about the advert it terms of the message it is trying to get across?

This advert is really powerful, especially for my age bracket, 16 - 21 because the actors portrayed in it are of the same age so it's easier to relate to the situation.

8. What do you think of this advert compared to the first advert you watched? Please explain your answers.

I can't connect to this advert as much as the first due to the fact I feel it's overly produced making it seem unrealistic whereby in the first advert it's set in a everyday environment that people could envision themselves in.

9. What do you think makes a good helpline advert appeal to its target audience (abuse victims)?

They need to be able to picture themselves in a similar situation so they feel that the people behind the advertisement understand and sympathies with the ordeal they are going through.

6. What do you think is good and bad about the advert it terms of the message it is trying to get across?

Good - It shows a scenario which is usually experienced by teenagers and young people. It also isn't as major and proves that not all abuse situations are bloody and big. It is also in a good format, and shows the impact on both sides.

Bad - It is only really aimed at young people and the dialogue is quite limited.

8. What do you think of this advert compared to the first advert you watched? Please explain your answers.
This advert is more dramatic, and not as to the point. It also leaves you in suspense throughout and literally has you on the end of the chair. It is more stereotypical and only really shows it from the woman's point of view whereas the other one makes the abuser stop and think about how they would look back.

9. What do you think makes a good helpline advert appeal to its target audience (abuse victims)?
It needs to be direct and not stereotypical. Also I don't think that putting a really big violent case on, will get people who are affected but not as severely to come forward. Simply because, they will not think their situation is bad enough and won't want to tell anyone let alone kick up a fuss.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful and good luck with your project! :)

Powerful in that the girl clearly did not want to do it but the boy kept going, it sort of showed that when you are in that situation getting out of it can be difficult. Seeing the same boy in the window, also gave a powerful feel.

Seeing the girl give in to something really did hit me hard. Whereas the second advert she went home, despite the fact she knew what was going to happen - obviously she had to go somewhere, but for some reason the first one still gave a bigger impact.

9. What do you think makes a good helpline advert appeal to its target audience (abuse victims)? It needs to show that they are not the only person in the world that gets abused. The advert needs to show the help they can get, and help them realise it should not be how it is/was.
