I plan to do so in a few months, after my exams probs and I'm just wondering how can I tell if the graphics card will be compatible? Or does it not matter as long as the computer is fairly up to date? I need to know this now or it's gonna bug me for ages :L

If your PSU has enough power and the right connectors, and your board has the right slot (PCI-E if it's in the last 5 years or so), the only other thing that will stop you is whether it'll fit in your case (and even then, only if it's a top end card)

my card barely fits in my computer, top end cards are enormous. keep that in mind

It's more the if it would be compatible, I'm not bothered about size so much. I probably won't be investing for a really amazing one anyway, just something where the game doesnt look like its for the PS1.

If your PSU can supply enough power and has the right connectors then yes.
