Cheryl Cole,

She's really beautiful and seems like a real nice person. However she should have become a model rather than a singer. She isn't really that good of a singer. That said she's still better than these "hardcore autotuners" from the states.

I don't even think she seems like a real nice person haha, she just conforms to the people she's around, never seen a legit smile on her face.

And I think all these horrid bands like Amy can Fly & You Me at Six, their music is horrid.

This, and I think that people appreciate other aspects of artist more than others. For some people it's solely about the music, but for others it's about their style, their persona, how they interact with fans, their videos etc.

Personally I can't really think of anyone who's 'overrated', I think every artist contributes something to music even if it's not to my taste.

i loved the UK indie rock scene LOL

anyway i think bieber is overrated for what he does and he's not good looking so i don't really see it. Willow smith too young in my opinon and she is a hard core auto tuner who barley sings in her one and only song. There are loads more but the US kids really aren't my style.

agreed they aren't that great! And just because we put current artists it's probably because the other bands were out of our time when we actually listen to music properly. and to be over rated we have to know their popularity in the context of the time like Elvis would be laughed at now but back then he was awesome.

No way would I say that Adele was overrated at all. She deserves the amount of attention she gets, she has an amazing voice. She doesn't need voice synthesizers or a load of editing to sound good, to me she's one of the best female artists out atm.

However I agree with Muse, they're definitely overrated.

oh please adele is so overrated. she is really good and i enjoy some of her music but the way some people talk about her pisses me off, like her success is crazy and i'm happy for her cos she's doing so well right now, but she's just 'cool' to like at the moment and everyone will be done with her when some new girl turns up and everyone will forget about her. fair enough if you like her, so do i, but she really isn't as good as a lot of people make her out to be.

I have to also say the Beatles which is kind of strange for me. I love a lot of old music, but I've never really been that much into them. I probably will have to listen to them a bit more and I'll probably like them more but still It's like their okay but nothing amazing.

Justin Bieber is a definite for me and nickleback. They aren't a "band" but Glee is just so dam overrated. All they do is take popular songs and ruin them in my opinion. I'd like to see them try something new, their own work.

Glee is overrated because they sing original songs and ruin them esp. Lea Michele. God knows why her voice is so dam irritating. Whenever I hear Lea's voice, I feel like slapping somebody. I hate Lea Michele.

Eminem is a pioneer of a whole genre of music, bringing rap to a mainstream white audience. He's incredibly talented at what he does.

Lady Gaga is a media horse, she wouldn't be a creditable solo artist without all her media stunts, she was a song writer and a struggling musician before she began her persona of this zainy popstar.

No that really is fact lol, someone of his calibre would never have got such huge media spotlight without being out of what was considered the norm for rap music. He's extremely talented but there is no denying that most of his hype is due to being white - you get people who literally say "I don't like rap except for Eminem" which is frankly nonsense as his music really isn't that distinctive from the thousands of other Detroit rappers

Bieber gets a lot of hatred for no apparent reason - he's talented and successful, yeah it's probably far too much for what he really does but I don't get it when people suggest he's actually a bad singer. Same with Willow (who doesn't only have one song), if you actually listen to her sing you realise she's really got it and she has the perfect attitude and work ethos for pop music too

Eminem is not a pioneer, pretty sure rap started in the late 70s. You're spot on about Gaga but she says all that herself, she's quite open about how she just does everything for the attention and fame

nonono. attention yes, why would you be an artist if you didn't want to grab your audience's attention? i like her for being open about that. but she has stated she doesn't want fame and doesn't want to be considered a celebrity, her whole first record was about being fascinated with our society's obsession with famous people and celebrity culture. i think she summed it up well when she said this: "I don't want to be part of the machine. I want the machine to be a part of me.”

She states over and over in various interviews that she studies famous people and works out how to get the most fame in the shortest amount of time lol, she's been saying that pretty much since Paparazzi - she calls herself a master of the art of fame

that doesn't mean she seeks fame, and she has never said she wants fame. she's just fascinated by it. at her shows she even does the whole cheesy "i don't need the fame or the money as long as i have my fans" thing.

Can't really see how you have put Gallows and In Flames in there. In Flames are a legendary band and Gallows are very underrated in their scene.

His longevity has nothing to do with his popularity, Slick Rick's been around much much longer and doesn't have half the fame Eminem does. The problem with trying to call Eminem overrated is that the term carries a big negative vibe and makes it sound like he's not talented - he is, but he's not the king of rap that white people seem to think he is, and that's being overrated

He's not being overrated. He is good and he wrote all his songs. He's not like other rappers out there who will only rap about girls, drugs and sex. He's a rapper who raps about life. People feel him and that's why he's famous. He is the king of rap.

Agreed, every time Gallows they bring out a record they end up having to tour religiously and fight to even make people listen to it. that's not over-rated in my books.

When you hear Snoop on the radio shouting about how much weed he smokes that isn't the be all and end all of rap lyricism, or even the majority - that's like suggesting that because Kings Of Leon (another overrated band that I'm not sure has been mentioned yet) sung a song about sex that got played a lot on radio all rock music is about sex

EDIT: (i decided to read the thread through) the xx aren't only famous because they toured with florence, please don't make statements without getting at least yr google on. they've had a massive underground following for the last 2 years, they only got "big" last year because their debut album was finally released, they had a catchy tv campaign (just a big x on the screen ha) and they got a lot of hype from nme/other music critics.
to say they're only famous because of forence is silly.

I don't like the rap scene myself because a lot of rappers have been involved with stuff such as gun crime, including eminem. I'm sure I'd get into more trouble if it was me but because they are famous rappers they seem to get off it.

I'm a rock guy myself, and before you call me a hypocrite, I'm quite against drugs even though I know a lot of people that take them. I think it's good when we get to see a band just doing it for the one important thing, the music.

It really annoyed me once when I saw a few years back the NME award thing on the TV. They where discussing who should win the awards, this was before the actual awards. It was the time when Franz Ferdinand had arrived and while I don't really listen to them now really liked them at the time. One of the people said they shouldn't get an award because they believed in true love and that wasn't a really Rock N Roll image.

I love bands who don't care about image and just make music because that's what they like to do. So what if they are a rock band that don't take drugs or a rap artist that doesn't come from the ghetto or is involved with gun and other crimes. It should be about the music only really.

I wouldn't have called you a hypocrite until you said that you're against drugs despite what the rock scene contains, because to then say the rap scene is bad because of THEIR crimes is hypocritical :P not having a go just pointing that out lol, you're allowed to not like a genre without any real reason of course but people shouldn't make comments about things they have no idea about like the post I quoted. It's basically like saying one footballer is the best in their team when you don't know any of the others, or some other such analogy

I quite agree with your last statement by the way, I think in ALL musical types there's far too much acting and facade which really isn't necessary for the music to sound good

I'm not a fan of rap anyway's although some old school rap is okay. If a rap song came out and I liked it, I would like it regardless of the person e.g. if they where a druggie and so on. I just think in the music scene both rock and rap, people sometimes at least appear to get away with more because they are famous.

I read Biffy Clyro chose to use that name because they found it weird and horrible and thought people would think the same. It was their way of saying, we don't sound cool as we don't want people listening just to be cool, we want people listening who like our music.

and eminem is SO over rated. it's like he is the only rapper it is 'acceptable' to like amongst pretentious music fans that usually frown upon rap and pop music for some unknown reason, cos yeah he's good, but like adele he isn't that good. probably because he's white.
