For the first one all i can suggest is if you have skype;

View your settings etc,

Tools > Options > Audio Settings
Make sure the box that says 'Automatically adjust microphone settings'

Not saying this is 100% the problem but if that box is ticked, it can dramamtically effect your mic volume on air.

You might also oneday look at investing into a condenser.

Problem is most basic microphones aren't really designed for broadcasting although some will work better than others.

It could be a lot of things. Have you got a friend with a computer you could test it out?

The big problem with radio broadcasting is it helps if everything is top notch.

As in I have a Rode NT1-A microphone with shock absorber, pop shield, stand which I got from a good friend who no longer needs it at £100 while it is worth £150-£200. However I don't get the full benefit from it as I'm using my on board Realtek HD Audio Sound card - It might be HD but it's a basic sound card which is built for really simply listening to audio. I do have a dedicated CMedia sound card but it's actually worse.
