Chell is back, potato power succeeded, anyone started playing yet?

It's bloody amazing, go and buy it/play it/stay up all night and don't revise for GCSEs.

Funny thing is that it was released in some parts today anyway.

Also I bought it on the PS3 and it was dispatched yesterday, so slim chance of it coming today, a larger chance tomorrow and almost guaranteed for thursday. What's it like compared to the original?

It's sorta like a puzzle and you use portals that you can go through to take you to other sections to reach the end of a room, it's hard to explain :s

You use portals to get to your objectives, where each portal links to each other. You have to get through turrets and use the portals logically to get to your objective as there is also physics heavily involved in the game. That's how I'd describe it. Portal 2 has more physics-based stuff though, like blob things which change the environment when you go on it (like one that makes you bounce I think).

Hardcore sesh could probably get it done in under 6 hours, a casual gamer who hasn't played the firs then I'd say at least 13, but that's just the single player. I haven't got the second one yet waiting for xbox but I'm pretty sure it will contain other game modes, such as the challenge maps which add extra game play and obviously the co-op story line will take you some time.

Chell is Cave's daughter

Look at all the clues, the photos, the "bring your daughter to work day" (there is a presentation by "chell") which is also the day GLaDOS took over.

Also another name there... Alyx.

Woops, mistyped a tag then. Sorry if anyone saw that....

But that was on "Bring your daughter to work day."

Eli?

Also, Caroline (Cave's secretary) was put into GlaDOS... perhaps why she starts caring for Chell but then lets her go at the end. She knows that her daughter needs freedom, but she can't ever escape the facility.

By the way:

Just completed co-op. If you want an indication of the future of Portal, and how the mechanics are explored tot their full potential, play it.

Some other review bits:

- Stephen Merchant steals the voice acting show, but the game overall has the best voice acting in any video-game ever.
- The gels really show off how far the Source engine has come.
- Day one DLC is annoying and I disagree with it when it was obviously originally in the game. If Valve had made them reward items, and then put up a store along with that, then I'd be fine.
- The "lemons" speech by J.K Simmons is... lemons.
- The end credits song is equal to that of Still Alive.
- The hidden track by The National is fantastic.
- Game of the year and I don't see any game (given how Last Guardian has been delayed) out-gaming it.

Glados: Oh no, this is the part where he kills us.
Wheatley: Hello. This is the part where I kill you.
CHAPTER 9 - THIS IS THE PART WHERE HE KILLS YOU
Trophy unlocked: The part where he kills you: This is that part.

ive just fallen down the lift bit wheres shes a potato, well not just. I'm in the room where you hear a speech from cave and his secretary and its like a huge room, where the hell do I go?

also regarding that day one dlc thing, is that only on the pc or is it on consoles too? I wanted to look, just out of interest, but saw nothing in both the ps store and the game menu

Day one DLC doesn't bother me, given I'm on PS3. I'll let Valve hear the community out though, I trust them.

I just believe the best video-games to be meaningful, compelling and interesting experiences. Uncharted 3 will be another Uncharted 2, which isn't a bad thing, but I just think there's nothing substantial there if you know what I mean. There's nothing to learn, nothing to think about - not in the puzzle sense but in the subliminal questions Portal 2 asks you. For example, all of the robots have human qualities with Wheatley having personality, humour and a sudden god complex. GlaDOS realises she was once human and opens up her emotions, and Cave Johnson is a dead man dreaming of living forever. Conversely we see Chell operates mechanically; solves puzzles as asked, does as asked, the linear format of the game supports this, she doesn't speak, she's a blank slate player character and she may or not be Caroline/Cave's adopted daughter. Valve clear use non-interactivity in the ironic sense, as they did with Half-Life 2.

It's that sort of thing that makes you ask what exactly does define humanity. Emotion? Cognitive thought? Love? Humour? Do people who don't laugh be described as robotic? Whose fault is it that Aperture Science goes all GlaDOS? Is it Cave's fault? Is it Caroline's? Is it the engineers creating so much power? Whose fault is is that Wheatley turned 'evil', given his regrets at the end, was it the player's? Were we acting out of fear of GlaDOS or hatred of her? Funny given we're quick to empathize with her soon after.

Just that kinda stuff that is so much more powerful than the train sequence in Uncharted 2. It's more subtle, more clever and has ideas that continue after its finished.

It's a matter of opinion really. To be honest, I want a decent horror game which doesn't involve any shooting to a large extent. Kind of like Alan Wake but not such a ridiculous plot line to start with of it being written by him and coming to life. Something which would make you chill in a more realistic sense. That would be my game of the year if it was done well.

Amnesia on the PC is all of that. Low system requirements, low price, best horror game of the last five years.

More in what sense? Because if you think about it, it is meant to be hidden as the practices are probably not legal so a remote wheat field or w.e makes sense, Although they must have dug a lot to fit it underground lol.

Just stuff like a hovering tractor in that field, or even running into cave johnson in a special room near the surface in which he wakes from a cryogenic sleep or something. After that many years maybe the world would have turned into a wasteland?

Just a comment about the end sequence with the turrets, due to the high amount of turrets the lighting on that would have killed your computer if they gave you interactivity then.

Pretty sure they had to make new lighting things just to make Portal 2 work half the time. Would really like to know if it was actually technically impossible or something.

What I'm saying is that when you're lighting 150+ animated entities and you can't slow down the engine because you've got it synced to music you've got serious FPS drops and even on a very good computer I doubt you'd get above 10 FPS, even without the lighting factored in you're screwed, they've got dynamic lighting being affected by 150 objects, that's not going to work unless pre rendered.
http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/1705/portalshot.png

I spend most a lot of my time in source engine games and I know when you get above just 50 props you're going to get problems. I'm saying it's impossible but I'm going to go check in garrysmod with the Portal 1 turrets.

Edit:
Just did a test, this is my pile of 147 Portal 1 turrets (Un-animated), the black thing and the red thing hanging off it was me trying to simulate dynamic lighting but garrysmod was just tinting the turrets instead, the turrets are all whited out due to some bug but it shouldn't affect the test at all. As you can see it's at 10 FPS and I'd like to say it wasn't, the engine slows down so that you never go below 10 FPS, and no they weren't even moving so the lag wasn't from physics.

That might well just the greatest game I have played in a long time, amazing single player, although I felt it was a little predictable to be honest, apart from the end, that I was not expecting.

The co-op was amazing fun, more fun than any co-op I have ever played, last night I finally managed to pick up the last achievements I needed in it as well, the "Still Alive" achievement is a pain but pretty easy.

Ah yes I found the problem, ruddy easy tuner that came with the motherboard was reducing the graphics memory clock by half the stock default without the option to disable it, and totally overiding the msi afterburner overclock :/ I match your fps now.

Urm, some i7 (Around 3Ghz) and an ATi 5870x2, even if it ran fine on a more powerful computer, that's not the point, source engine games are about running on low-spec systems, they'd prerender it even if you could get acceptable FPS.

The first DLC has been announced and is coming this summer for free! :D

Yesterday we reported that Portal 2 DLC may be coming this summer and Valve has just confirmed it to be true; the first Portal 2 DLC is officially scheduled for a summer release at the exorbitant price of...free! The DLC, currently titled "DLC #1" will offer new test chambers, leaderboards, challenge mode for single and multiplayer modes, and more. It will be absolutely free of charge for all versions of the game, including Playstation 3, PC, and Xbox 360.
