View Full Version : HxF Beauty Contest - What could've been done better

What the title says. How could the HxF Beauty Contest been done better?
In my opinion everything was far too vague in the voting thread - we weren't told if we had to vote for both genders, if we had to use all 3 votes, or if we could vote for ourselves or give rep to those who vote for us.
Also - it HAS (despite people saying it hasn't) become a popularity contest. Sorry to say - it's a nice idea but it hasn't worked how it was intended.
I think private votes (eg; private poll/PMs) would've been better as people wouldn't see others votes and therefore there is no possibility of being pressured into voting for certain people or bribing.

does it really need to be spoon fed??

you're a fine one to talk, you just posted saying you voted for your friends so until you vote properly you can't complain it's a popularity contest tbf

fair but if you're really that weak willed that people can bribe you online into voting for them then wow.

You are clutching at straws here Robbie. It's pretty explanatory, if you want to vote for 3 girls, vote for 3 girls, if you want to vote for 3 girls and 3 boys, vote for both. I don't think we need to give you a dummies guide to everything, you're all teenagers :P
It was always going to be a popularity contest, that's what these things are and nobody has ever denied that. It was run last year before you were even here and it was a popularity contest then (although someone pretty much paid their way to the top and it wasn't realised until afterwards, this won't happen this year).
Private votes/polls wouldn't work because of the amount of entries, besides I think it all adds to the fun making everyone say who they find good looking on HabboxForum ;). Bribes would happen private or not - it's just something that people need to report if they hear of it and it's something that the competition organisers need to monitor.

The fact that I gave a template on what to reply with I thought was quite obvious that you vote for both boys and girls, You can vote for 3 people or you can vote for 2 people it doesn't really matter to be honest. Personally (of course I would say this since I made it) I think it was posted fine and I couldn't exactly say "don't give anyone rep for voting you" anybody is welcome to give whoever they want rep and we can't stop them.

Despite what people think, better preparation wouldn't of solved people asking others to vote for them. Just deal with it jeez, if people are gagging for one month vip so bad, let them bribe their friends. There isn't a way you can stop it, it is habboxforum, it is either a popularity contest or no contest.

I was carrying this discussion from the actual thread btw.
And @Myke - No, it doesn't need to be spoonfed, but it needs to be clear - especially stuff about voting for yourself - I had no idea if you could or not.
And Oli - it's a BEAUTY contest, not a popularity contest. Private polls mean that people can vote for who they want without other people knowing so they can try and be bribed but then they can vote for someone else anyway?

I just feel that it's pointless saying 'use your best picture' because some can use a really bad one and get most of the votes.

As Richie said, Robbie - it's HabboxForum what can you expect. Although last year second and third places did go to who I felt were "better looking". Again robbie, private polling doesn't stop bribery.

I am not going to tell people that they can't +rep someone for voting for them... you guys are constantly saying how we're too harsh, imagine what you would say if I told you that you couldn't go around +repping people lol.
I agree that it should have been made clearer whether you could/couldn't vote for yourself or not and I will take full responsibility for this as I checked over the thread before Scott posted it. For the rest come on, it's pretty self explanatory..
I think it has worked out how it was intended, it was intended as a bit of fun and has been fun until it just got ruined by some people being extremely immature because they're taking it far too seriously.
people on this forum take it SO SERIOUSLY. Yes it wasn't completely clear. Yes it is in some senses a popularity contest but I see no difference between a popularity contest and a beauty contest - they're both equally morally questionable. And no, it doesn't actually matter AT ALL.

I agree that a few more simple ground rules could have been laid out, nothing can ever run smoothly on Habbox and most of us know that by now. Nothing remains unchallenged for fairness, nothing can stop hierarchy and nothing can stop 20 billion feedback threads on one subject.
If organisers just took a teensy bit more time to just clear things up we could abolish threads such as this one. It's a purpose built popularity contest, it's also a choice to enter it/vote on it. There's nothing we can do about that aspect, but staff can stop foolish stuff like voting for yourself, for example.

might suggest to ma managers that they should just run the "HabboxForum Popularity Contest" next time, see what complaints come then :D

Does that mean I can -rep people who don't vote for me? not that I would, I'm just curious, would it be classed as pointless?

I totally agree. If its a popularity contest Oli, then re-name it and remove the pictures.
I personally think +repping is okay, its hardly a bribe, but people paid furni on habbo to vote for them, LOL.

If someone posted in a thread where you were asking for help and their reply fitted with all HabboxForum rules, but wasn't quite enough to help you - would it be fair to -rep that post? Probably not, would it be fair to +rep another post which did help you - yes. I think that's a silly argument Richie so don't go there! It's merely saying "thanks for saying im good looking" - if you were to -rep it you would be making assumptions about what they think about you ;)
Can I be (what would appear to be) the first to say well done to Scott for doing this? I did it last year and it's an awful amount of work - just wait til you're counting these votes scotty :P.

But that'd be hard to prove if you get me. It's like if I PMed scott now and said such and such bribed, he would contact them and ask them. They would obviously deny it?

Like Oli said you can send me a PM and I will look into it, if it's on the forum report the post I will see it from there too :P

Well if you were going to report it or knew that it was going on then you'd have some sort of proof so if you PM me with that :P
Oh yeah super amounts of love to scott who probs knew it wasn't going to be the easiest contest to run from last year and who I think has actually done a good job seeing as it isn't even a strictly official thing I don't think. or is it? i'm confused actually.

Depends what kind of evidence you had, if it was a screenie say on Habbo "vote me here and i'll give you 5c" - I would say that's enough for disqualification. Likewise with PMs etc.

My point is if you're going to have reputation on this forum, use it both ways, otherwise it's pointless. -rep and +rep are not equal, if you aren't going to use them equally remove them because I honestly don't see a point. Can you give me an example of some posts I could -rep that wouldn't get removed when reported?
EDIT:
I suppose this is going off topic so feel free to pm me some examples I'm intrigued to know what I can actually -rep.

It's official in the sense it's run by a habbox staff member, thats what I got told last year - last year I just started it as a member but got told off as I was a s'mod and "represented habbox" when i implied for it to just be some fun to generate a bit of excitement. I suppose this year with Nicola endorsing it it means that there is a prize (last year there wasn't a prize) and it's free to be stricter on guidelines in terms of the bribery.

Post:
You're a ******* **** Richie, I wish you would fall off a cliff and die.
-rep: "Don't be mean to richie" -rep "Don't wish death on me" etc ~ absolutely fine
Let's give an example of a real situation that occurred recently:
"I think we should forgive Osama Bin Laden, he's been killed for Christ's sake and people are happy. RIP Osama Bin Laden"
-rep "I disapprove" -rep "You are sick" -rep "This opinion is disgusting"
These are just two examples of many, besides this thread is not about the rep system :)

But proof? Hmm, if you class a screeny as a proof then nearly everyone would be disqualified because nearly everyone on habbo said 'vote for me and ill give you furni' and how are you's supposed to know who is bribing and who is joking? :P

Well, they would be stupid to say it because it can bring up a disqualification case, obviously also if someone did take a bribe this is extra evidence.

lol that'll be the yearly habbox award thing jack used to do
or just the rep system in general. the most popular people tend to be those of the highest rep.

Because some people may want to? I've seen it happen where you can vote for yourself to enhance your votes. It still needs to be clarified.
This thread isn't bashing the idea. It is, in theory, a good idea and I applause Scott for thinking of it and doing it and giving up his time to do it. However this is a thread for constructive criticism as to how it can be better next time.

a contest where you can vote for yourself isn't a contest.

I posted saying I was rejected and that I was going to leave/be less active on the forum until the apps were open (although obviously I haven't - I'm not sure why but anyway) but I didn't say anything bad about Habbox in the thread if that's what you're asking.

I think your being silly Robbie if you thought there would be no popularity involved in the contest, that's how it's been for a long time in both online and real life - moaning won't change it.

Makes me kinda glad I don't know many people on the forum because I voted honestly rather than people I liked or people asking for votes.
