Habbox Music contest

I was just thinking, you know how Habbox usually have a singing contest?

Why not have a contest where they play instruments using a familiar song and then say, ,Jess, and the Head's or the GM's could create a shortlist then put a vote with about 5 in and see who wins and the 1st 3 could win a prize?

However, to ensure that no one is cheating maybe make part of it video based so you can actually see them playing the instrument?

Just a quick idea/thought!

Sounds nice Sam! I'd support this, it seems different and music contests shouldn't all be about singing! I do love Habbox Starz though, so I wouldn't like to see it removed, maybe just the following week, they could do a 2nd but for instruments? :P

It would be nice to know how many people here play a musical instrument (and when I mean play I mean actually being able to play it rather than playing a few chords or notes or what not) on here before I give my opinion 'cos it really varies depending on what community. :D

It's just silly if Habbox Starz accepted instrumental, if you put singing and non-singing clips together I would say singing > no singing. I wouldn't mind creating a seperate competition specifically for instruments though. Probably pick one song that most people would know/suit all tastes/rather new and set it as the competition song.

I didn't mean it to run with Habbox Starz with it, just for instruments, I too like Habbo Starz.

I think with picking one song, it may be more difficult on some instruments than others!

I think that this is a good idea although I am unsure on how popular it would be on its own. I like Sam's idea of allowing instrumental clips in with Habbox Starz, that might work.

No I disagree with your idea about picking one song because I think it should be open to choice just like Habbox Starz really on what song you choose. I say this because a) you might actually not like the song you're playing, b) you may not be able to play the piece anyway because you can't play by ear (as some musicians can't which is ok) or can't make an arrangement of the piece because of this so if you wanted to actually play the proper part for your instrument you'd have to buy sheet music as a last resort which I don't think people would want to do for a Habbo forum :P and c) depending on which instrument you're playing will depend on if you get the melody, the harmony or just a few bass notes, this also leads onto pitch range that instruments only have a certain range they can play from and to so therefore if you're playing either a couple of octaves down or even in a different key it may sound a bit off and therefore people won't vote for you.

Did that make sense to anyone? I'm doing 100 things at once. :(

Also, one song wouldn't work. If someone plays a french horn I doubt they would be happy if the chosen song was a classic rock song, like a jazz guitarist wouldn't like getting a drum and bass song lol

I think the only problem with this would be that people vote prefer and vote more for the singers as opposed to the instrumental musicians. So maybe if you did two different rounds on the same evening, like two different categories - 'The Singers' and 'The Instrumental Musicians' or something - then had a winner from each category and then open a vote between the two for an overall winner? I think that'd be fairer and may work.

How would we know they aren't cheating? They could be asked to state their forum name and what it is they will be playing and the name of their instrument, perhaps? :P

Good point! I rather like the idea of this being a video type thing as then hopefully that could help eliminate cheating :P As I said, they could be asked just to simply state what instrument they're playing, the piece they're playing and their forum name. I think it'd be well good :P

One thing though, if you look at my recent article, I posted about virtualpiano where you can play the piano online and it sounds fairly genuine.

Therefore, if you play the piano/keyboard etc, then surely you could video your hands playing the actual instrument.

I know it would be more difficult to do so with instruments nearer the face, but you get my drift?!

Yeah, I think one thing though is that you'd need to confident in playing and showing yourself if you were going to play an instrument that was going to be nearer to your face, but I suppose we could get them to say their forum name, instrument and piece title, then they could simply tilt the camera away a little if they didn't want to show their face or something?
