Checking your device

1. Install 'Ask Mr Pigfish' by opening this URL in the Android browser - http://cl.ly/78Mf
2. Open the app. If you have a G1 (first generation phone) then you can continue following this guide. If not and you have a G2 (second generation phon) then stop now or YOU WILL brick your phone.

Rooting the device

1. Open the settings by pressing 'Menu' from the home screen and selecting 'Settings'.
2. Tap 'Applications'.
3. Ensure the 'Unkown sources - Allow installation of non-Market applications' box is ticked.
4. Go to http://cl.ly/7usc in the browser. A small apk file will download.
5. Pull down the notificaion bar and tap the file (uRoot.apk). (Ensure the file has finished downloading before tapping it.)
6. Tap 'Install' - Then tap 'Open' - Then tap 'Root'.

The device is now rooted!

Install ClockworkMod Recovery

1. In the browser go to http://cl.ly/7916
2. It will open up a Market application. Tap 'Free' and then 'OK'.
3. In the browser go to http://cl.ly/79m7
4. It will open up a Market application. Tap 'Free' and then 'OK'.
5. In the browser go to http://cl.ly/7vZy - It will download a small file (3.55MB) called latest.zip.
6. Open 'ES File Explorer' from the app list. Tap 'download' - then tap and hold (long press) on latest.zip. Tap 'Extract to' and select 'Current path'. Tap 'OK'.
7. Open 'ManD5' from the app list. Tap 'Select a file' - Then tap '/download', then '/clock.img' and then 'OK'.
8. A longer number will appear. Check that it's '4b949d51c54501e1a3dd0a4c6095766e'. If not - You'll need to delete all the files you downloaded during this guide and start again.
9. Open the browser and go to http://cl.ly/7u3c - A small apk file will download. Once downloaded - Pull down the notification bar and tap it.
10. Tap 'Install' and then 'Open'. Superuser will ask for permission - Grant permission by tapping 'OK'.
11. Tap the 'Recovery' tab', then tap 'Install Recovery' and then '/sdcard/download/clock.img'. Tap 'OK'.
12. Wait for the installing box to go - Done!

Install the ROM

1. Download the save the ROM to your PC. Download from http://cl.ly/7uwJ
2. If your phone is plugged into the computer or charger - Unplug it.
3. Take out the battery and replace it again.
4. Turn on your phone whilst holding down the 'Volume Down' key on the side of the phone. Hold the 'Volume Down' key for about 5 seconds. ClockworkMod Recovery should boot up on your phone.
5. Plug your phone into the PC.
6. Use the volume button on the side of the phone to scroll. Scroll down to 'mounts and storage'. Click the Home button.
7. A new storage device should be recognised on your PC. Copy and paste the zip you downloaded in step 1 (the ROM) to the root of the new storage device. Do not paste it into any of the sub folders.
8. On the phone - Press the back button twice.
9. Highlight 'Wipe cache partition' and press the Home button. Highlight 'Yes - wipe cache' and press the home button.
10. Highlight 'Wipe data/factory reset' and press the Home button. Highlight 'Yes - delete all user data' and press the Home button.
11. Highligh 'Install zip from sdcard' and press the Home button. Highlight 'Choose zip from sdcard' and press the Home button.
12. Highligh the zip file you copied earlier and press the Home button. Highlight 'Yes - Install ...' and press the Home button.
13. Press the back button once the install has completed and highlight 'reboot system' and press the Home button.

Well done - The process is now complete!

Nice tut, but it's not that simple to root devices anymore with locked bootloaders and the like :(

Well, its becoming easier, HTC just announced the other day that they were going to be unlocking bootloaders on new phones, and Motorola are doing the same, so there is hope!
